Editor's Notes
Welcome to Thomas Nelson Community College’s information session for undecided students. If you are looking for a new path, you are in the right place. Let us show you how TNCC can help you begin a successful journey.
As the peninsula’s community college, Thomas Nelson is your first choice. We offer education and training that is personal, affordable, flexible, and local.
The purpose of this presentation is to provide you with information on our college, programs, and services. We will also help you determine which program is right for your and how to enroll.
We have been a part of the community since 1967, recently celebrating our 50th anniversary. We offer college credit and workforce training programs; and have locations in Hampton, Williamsburg, and Newport News.
As a place of higher education, our mission, vision, and core values are the guiding principles we use to meet the needs of our community. <Read slide>
Our college credit programs include: career studies certificates and 2 year associate degree programs that can either prepare you for employment after graduation or prepare you to transfer to a 4 year college or university.
Workforce Development offers short-term, career-specific training that prepares students for industry certifications.
All new students must select a program when they submit their application to TNCC. But with all of our program offerings, it may seem difficult to know which program is right for you. Here are a few simple steps you can take to help you make your choice. First, get to know you. Second, set some goals; and third, research our programs and make you choice.
Let’s dig into those steps a little deeper. Step 1: Get to know you. Career assessments are great tools that can help you identify your interests, skills, and values. Here are a couple examples of free, quick career assessments that you can access online: the Virginia Education Wizard and the O’Net Interest Profiler. After completing an assessment like this, you will receive a list of career options that match you! Having these options should help you begin to narrow down your choices.
Step 2: Set your goals. “To begin a successful journey, one must know where they are going.” Taking the time to determine your goals is an important part of selecting the right program. Do you want to earn a college degree? For some, it is an important milestone. For others, the career they want to pursue may require a college degree. Or perhaps you already have a degree and want to advance or change your career. Maybe you don’t have a degree but want to get training and join the workforce as quickly as possible. Answering these questions and knowing your goals can help you narrow your choices even further.
The last step of this process is to research our programs and make your choice. We will go over some general information on our program offerings in the next few slides. However, more detailed information can be found at the links on this slide, which will bring you to the online college catalog and the Workforce Development home page. At this point in the process of selecting a program, you should have a better idea if you need a college credit program or a workforce training program. And you should also know what areas you are interested in (for example: healthcare or education? Human services or IT?). Completing a career assessment, setting your goals, and researching our programs will help you select the best program for you. But what if you change your mind? Changing your program is possible. However, it may cost you more time and money. The more seriously you take these three steps, the more successful the start of your TNCC journey will be.
Our college credit programs are divided into three academic divisions: Arts, Business, Humanities, and Social Science; Public Safety, Allied Health, and Human Services; and Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. We also offer Workforce Training Programs in Business & Entrepreneurship, Culinary Arts & Hospitality, Cybersecurity & Technology; Healthcare, Manufacturing & Construction, and Transportation & Licensing.
Here is a listing of programs in the Arts, Business, Humanities, and Social Science academic division. In this academic division, you can find programs in accounting & finance; art & photography; business administration & management; general education; liberal arts; and social science.
Types of programs offered include: certificates and degrees. You’ll notice that some programs are typed in color with an asterisk. These programs are designed for college and university transfer. Certificate programs may be beneficial for those who already have a college degree and are looking to advance their skills or change their career. Associate of applied art and science programs are 2yr degree programs that will prepare for employment after graduation.
Our Public Safety, Allied Health, and Human Services division offers programs in: administration of justice & paralegal; administrative support technology; dental hygiene; early childhood education; emergency medical services; fire science technology, health science, human services, and nursing.
Programs in our Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics – or STEM - division include: aircraft systems automotive technology, computer aided drafting; computer technology, cybersecurity, electronics technology; engineering, and geographical information systems.
And our STEM programs continue in: HVAC & refrigeration; information technology; mechatronics & machining, mechanical engineering; industrial technology; manufacturing technology; science, and welding.
TNCC Workforce Development provides short-term, career specific training to prepare you for industry certification. The links on this page will bring you to more detailed program information, including program description and requirements.
There is more to life at Thomas Nelson than what can be found in the classroom. Becoming involved in the campus community can make your time with us even more fulfilling. Whether you want to join a club or become a student athlete, there is something here for you!
Student Success Services are also an important part of student life. We want our students to thrive both inside and outside of the classroom and we realize that services are sometimes needed to make that happen. As a TNCC student, you may be eligible to receive some or all of these services. Each link on this slide will bring you to a description of what the service is and how you may be able to receive it.
The biggest question for most students is “How much is this going to cost?” Fortunately, we offer the greatest value in the area. Tuition at a community college simply cannot be beat. Our current tuition rate for college credit courses is $160.20 per credit hour for Virginia residents, which works out to be approximately $2400 per semester. An average full-time semester is taking 15 credit hours or about 4-5 classes.
Tuition and fees for workforce development vary by program.
There are many ways for students to pay their tuition and fees. Direct payments to the college can be made by students paying out of pocket. But there is also financial assistance for both college credit and workforce programs. If you want to enroll in a college credit program, financial assistance begins with a FAFSA – the free application for federal student aid. Our FAFSA priority deadline is May 1st and although that date has passed, it does not mean you can’t apply for financial aid. Applying after the priority deadline means that you may not receive all that you’re eligible for – because financial aid is first come, first serve.
Although different from college credit financial aid, workforce development has many financial assistance opportunities for students, including Fast Forward, a grant program that can cover up to two-thirds of the program cost.
And don’t let me forget G3 – last dollar, state-funded financial help for certain programs in both college credit and workforce! Check out that link for a list of G3 approved programs and how to apply.
Lastly, we are ready to discuss next steps. If you are applying to a college credit program, you will first need to submit an online college application. After application submission, you will receive a student ID number, username, and temporary password. You will use this information to set up your MyTNCC student account and take the Thomas Nelson Enrollment Survey. Be sure to read carefully through the enrollment steps on the new student page to prepare for what’s to come – including meeting with an advisor and registering for courses, signing up for new student orientation, and more.
If you want to enroll in a workforce training program, you will create a profile with the Thomas Nelson Workforce Development Online Registration System. Once your profile is created, you can register for an online information session or – if no information session is required – you can search for and add a class to your cart. Then, you will set up your MyTNCC student account, sign in, click on “canvas” and select your class or information session. Read through the full list of enrollment steps to get ready for all your next steps.
Thank you for watching our information session! We look forward to welcoming you to our campus as you begin a new, exciting journey at TNCC.
