Working summary:
Dog Behaviourist
12 years in a full time dog behaviour practice running my own company now as Director of ‘Alpha Dog
Behaviour Ltd’. Over one thousand cases to date, ranging from aggression to dogs/people to separation
anxiety, phobias and puppy behaviours. Testimonials can be seen here.
Dog Expert Witness
Approximately 60 cases assessing dogs of all breeds primarily under the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991, Dogs
Act 1871 and the Animal Welfare Act 2006 usually pertaining to cases of dogs injuring people. Most
assessments are carried out in Police kennels, others in the owner’s home or in public spaces. All
assessments are video recorded leading to a thorough report accompanied with video evidence presented
in a timely and professional manner. Many of these cases are to ‘type’ dogs being suspected as Pit Bull
terriers, combined with a behavioural assessment.
When requested, I have presented my findings in person to both Magistrate and Crown courts throughout
the country. When attending court, I always take care to prepare well and to present myself in a
professional manner at all times.
I am fully conversant in submitting quotations to assess dogs whereby the owner is entitled to legal aid.
As a dog expert witness, I have worked with many police forces throughout the country such as West
Midlands, West Mercia, City of London, Essex, Avon and Somerset, South Wales, West Yorkshire, Surrey,
2. Greater Manchester and Lancashire.
I also assess for foster organisations as to the suitability of the dog or other pets to receive children in the
home. Testimonials for the above can be seen here.
Previous experience
Upon leaving school in 1984 I worked on a fish farm for 3 years. I then spent 10 years in a sales career
working face to face in a business environment. I moved to the Midlands and spent 2 years with the West
Mercia Police force as a constable. I then enjoyed 5 years as a house dad raising our daughter whilst
volunteering as a Samaritan before moving into my current vocational career.
General Business
I greatly enjoy working with people on all levels to ensure a satisfactory outcome whether it is resolving a
dog behaviour problem with a private client or liaising with solicitors or dog legislation officers (DLO’s) to
arrange and carry out an assessment on a dog.
I have a keen interest in social media and have developed a sound base of followers, which enables me to
disseminate information to inform and educate dog owners. Face Book currently has a following over
7,500 people and Twitter 22,700 people. My web site also enjoys a heavy flow of traffic and these efforts
have created a very busy practice, all of which I manage along with the assistance of my partner and fellow
Director, Sara Hodgson.
I regularly offer comment on local BBC radio in relation to canine current affairs and have also given TV
interviews with Sky, BBC, ITV and LBC. I also have a well-populated You Tube Channel covering a variety of
training and behaviour tips. I also write each month for Dogs Monthly magazine as a dog behaviour expert.
I have given numerous public talks on dog behaviour subjects; these talks are usually in cooperation with
veterinary practices.
Personal Interests
I’m a parent to our 17-year-old daughter and own 2 dogs. Pip our 10 year old Border terrier and Max a 7
year old Wire Haired Vizsla. We love to take breaks in Cornwall with long beach walks.
I have a keen interest in health and fitness and enjoy Crossfit, Audax (long distance) cycle events and cycle
touring when time allows. I also enjoy modern and classic cars and have done a number of track days both
in the UK and in France. I’m also a keen cook and avid reader of material related to my interests.
