David Michelangelo Essay
Classical Greek nude statues influenced Renaissance artists, including Michelangelo.
Michelangelo copied some of the stances and positions of Greek sculptures in order to reveal the beauty and strength of the human figure. He created
sculptures that expressed intellectual and spiritual ideas.
The statue 'David' by Michelangelo is a representation of the Biblical hero David. It is a very well–known piece of work which is favoured in Florence.
The work captures the ideas of the Greek figures. The David we are presented with is a nude man with a very muscular physique. Michelangelo
catches him at the peak of his concentration. He stands relaxed, but alert, resting on a classical pose known as contrapposto. The figure stands with one

Biography of Michelangelo Essay
Biography of Michelangelo The second of five brothers, Michelangelo was born on March 6, 1475, at Caprese, in Tuscany, to Ludovico di Leonardo
di Buonarotto Simoni and Francesca Neri. The same day, his father noted down: "Today March 6, 1475, a child of the male sex has been born to me
and I have named him Michelangelo. He was born on Monday between 4 and 5 in the morning, at Caprese, where I am the PodestГ ." Although born in
the small village of Caprese, Michelangelo always considered himself a "son of Florence," as did his father, "a Citizen of Florence."
His Childhood and Youth
Buonarroti's mother, Francesca Neri, was too sick and frail to nurse Michelangelo, so he was placed with a wet nurse, in a family of stone cutters,

In Michelangelo's personal diary he recounts his first two works: "My first work was a small bas–relief, The Madonna of the Stairs. Mary, Mother of
God, sits on the rock of the church. The child curls back into her body. She foresees his death, and his return on the stairway to heaven. "My second
work, another small relief. My tutor read me the myth of the battle of the Lapiths against the Centaurs. The wild forces of Life, locked in heroic
combat. "Already at 16, my mind was a battlefield: my love of pagan beauty, the male nude, at war with my religious faith. A polarity of themes and
forms...one spiritual, the other earthly, I've kept these carvings on the walls of my studio to this very day."
His patron Lorenzo died in 1492; two years later Michelangelo fled Florence, when the Medici were temporarily expelled.
His Studies of Anatomy
During the years he spent in the Garden of San Marco, Michelangelo began to study human anatomy. In exchange for permission to study corpses, the
prior of the church of Santo Spirito, NiccolГІ Bichiellini, received a wooden Crucifix from Michelangelo. But his contact with the dead bodies caused
problems with his health, obliging him to interrupt his activities periodically.

Michelangelo Pieta Essay
Michelangelo's Pieta Michelangelo once said, "The true work of art is but a shadow of the divine perfection." These words have uttered in my
mind over and over again, as I read them; a man with such talent and grace in his work giving glory to a higher being, whose work is more divine than
we can ever imagine. A work of perfection is hard to come by in the lives of mere men, butMichelangelo's Pieta was so close to perfection that the
images in which the sculpture portrays almost comes to life. The word Piet means "pity" or "compassion" (The Crucifixion of Christ). The Pieta has
come a long way through history and has been appraised by many along the way, but through it all, the good, the bad Pieta still stands with a
fascinating story to...show more content...
Taking a closer look, we can observe that on Christ's hands and feet there are beautiful veins that give Pieta the appearance having life flow
through the sculpture. In addition, when we look at Mary's hand supporting Christ under his arm, Michelangelo thought to have the skin of Christ
arm rise up like it would on a real person. There are so many intricate details in this sculpture that I can't physically describe them all. One must
wonder what was Michelangelo's inspiration; why did he create the facial expressions he did. Pietas have been done before but none like this.
However, the Proportions of Pieta are not entirely natural as we can see clearly their heads are proportionate, but the Virgin Mary has a much
larger body. However, Michelangelo was very clever; he was able to over dramatize the folds in Mary's fabric to disguise her actual size. In addition, by
making her body much larger, she was able to easily support the weight of her dead son lying in her lap. In these folds, Michelangelo shows his skill
and artisanship (Italian Renaissance). Michelangelo used a drill to give depth to the folds in Mary's drapery. This gave the folds a more realistic look
that was unpredictable, much like the techniques of the Greeks. I don't know how Michelangelo was able sculpt such magnificent works of art and
never sketch out his work before diving in, and chiseling stone away. Michelangelo always thought of stones like this "Every block of stone has a

Michelangelo, A Biography Essay
Michelangelo Buonarroti was born on March 6, 1475. He lived almost a full century and died on February 18, 1564; he was still working six days
before his death. During his life, the western world underwent what was perhaps the most remarkable period of change since the decline of the
Roman Empire. The Renaissance saw changes in all aspects of life and culture, with dramatic reforms sweeping through the worlds of religion,
politics, and scientific belief. Michelangelo was one of the advocates of this new philosophy, while creating some of the most beautiful and very
famous artwork pieces ever created.

Other influences on his young mind included two members of the church: one was his local priest and the other was an opinionated monk named Fra
Girolamo Savonarola.
Michelangelo first heard Savonarola preach in 1492, the year in which his first patron, Lorenzo de' Medici, died and Michelangelo returned to his
father's home. The monk's sermons and his subsequent violent death had a lifelong effect on the artist and many of his works; the loss of Lorenzo also
deeply affected his artistic consciousness.
At the age of 21, he made his first trip to Rome, a city that was both to play a prominent part in his life and create many frustrations for him. This
time he spent five years in the city, creating some of his best known works. "In 1496–97, he completed his first important commission, Bacchus." (
Martindale 78)
In 1497–98, Michelangelo created the Pieta, a masterpiece of sculpture that could not be further removed in content from the witty Bacchus. The Pieta
is heralded as one of his greatest achievements. The sorrowing face of Mary, contemplating the lifeless body of her eldest child, still wrings the heart
today. He took the subject out of a religious context and placed it in a humanist light emphasizing the grief of Mary and the mortality of her dead son.
On August 16, 1501, the new republic commissioned Michelangelo to make the statue of David. He was asked to sculpt it from a single block of

Michelangelo was born, his family moved back to Florence, Italy. His mother was ill for a long time and died in 1481 when Michelangelo was just six.

reliefs, the Taddei tondo and the Pitti tondo.
Michelangelo was called to Rome by Pope Julius II to create a tomb for him which was to contain forty lifesize figures, an endeavor that was never
fully realized. In 1508, Michelangelo began work on the Sistine Chapel ceiling frescoes, a task that would occupy him until 1512. Upon completing
the Sistine Chapel, Michelangelo returned to the work on Julius' tomb, completing the figure of Moses and leaving unfinished two Slaves. Following
Julius' death in 1513, he worked for Pope Leo X, Lorenzo de' Medici's son. At the Medici family's parish church in Florence, San Lorenzo,
Michelangelo created tombs for Giuliano and Lorenzo de' Medici (II) and designed the Laurentian library, an annex to San Lorenzo.
In 1534, Michelangelo left Florence for Rome, where he was to spend the remainder of his life. He returned to the Sistine Chapel where he created
the Last Judgment, another fresco, on the end wall. He designed the dome for St. Peter's and the Capitoline Square. He also worked on the Palazzo

Michelangelo1 Michelangelo is one of the greatest creators in the history of art. Most people recognize the genius for his beautiful sculpture "David"
and his breathtaking paintings on the walls and ceiling of the Sistine chapel. However, along with his sculptures and paintings, Michelangelo was an
accomplished poet and architect; which is a reflection of his amazing creative ability.
Michelangelo was born on March 6, 1475, in a small Italian city, Caprese, but he spent a large portion of his life in Rome, Italy. It was there that
Michelangelo created one of the most famous works of art, the marble sculpture, Pieta. A controversially youthful Mary is seated, holding the dead

Also, one characteristic of every Pieta, other than Michelango's, is the awkwardness of the Mother and child; the artist solved this common problem by
draping Mary in long, flowing clothes and arranging the two bodies to form a pyramid. Michelangelo has had many influential people persuade his
works. Hibbard states that with the Pieta,
"We sense the debt to [Michelangelo's] Early Renaissance forebears– Verrocchio and Jacopo della Quercia– and of course this is still, chronologically
a work of the Quattrocento. Highly finished and polished, it shows a Quattrocento love of detail; linear drapery folds pile up in ornamental abundance"

Two items are peculiar about the Michelangelo's Pieta, Mary's youthful face and the artist's signature, which is found only on the Pieta. Common
knowledge shows that the artist gave Mary a youthful face because women retain their beauty longer if they are virgins, and perhaps Michelangelo
sensed his great accomplishment and felt proud to chisel his name on the work; certainly, it was fitting for such an immaculate work of art. The Pieta
is considered untouchable by today's art world; a work that will never be duplicated. Michelangelo's Pieta is one of the most notable works of all time.
When Michelangelo moved back to Florence, Italy, the artist created one of his most recognizable sculptures, the David. Unlike most works of David,

in St. Peter's, Michelangelo heard a pilgrim say that another artist did the work from Lombard.
In a fit of rage, he took a hammer and chisel and on the sash that runs across Mary's breast inscribed "Michelangelo Buonarroti, Florentine, made this".
It was the only work that he ever signed. Michelangelo's temper was proverbial, his character difficult, touchy, stubborn, and he often had difficulties in

After returning to Florence, Michelangelo produced the gigantic fourteen–foot marble

David is extremely buff, a quality that was highly revered during the Greek and Roman eras, and he shows off the male body very well. He is in a

legs in another direction.
The well defined muscular build is the ideal form to our culture today. Personally I strive to better myself to be physically strong and muscular in
appearance. Though David is a male model, he makes a gorgeous physical role model for me. His facial expression is tense and determined, as it
should be before the battle of Goliath. Determination, fighting for what one stands for, is noble and stunning.
Unlike the David of Donatello, Michelangelo's David is not shown after conquering his enemy. Instead, he is portrayed as an extremely athletic and
manly character; the sculpture even depicts a worried look cast upon David's face and the carved marble veins seem to pulse with anticipation as he
contemplates the upcoming fight. Cast over David's shoulder is his sling, and the stone is clutched in his right hand. Michelangelo's David depicts the
ideal youth who has just reached manhood and is capable of great physical and intellectual feats, which is part of the classical tradition. Michelangelo's

Michelangelo : The Greatest Artists Of All Times
Michelangelo
Michelangelo is acknowledged as one of the greatest artists of all times. Most of his works revolve around the Italian Renaissance. Some of the major
things that aid in understanding more about him are the fact that he was born during the Renaissance period. According to facts stated by Unger (12),
Michelangelo was born on the 6th of March in the year 1475 (Unger 12). Being born during the period of the Italian Renaissance is an attribute that
explains why he had an in–depth knowledge regarding the Renaissance period. Furthermore, apart from carrying works of art on sculptures, he was
also good in poetry, painting, and works of architecture. Knowledge on these subjects is imperative as they assisted him in the crafting of sculptures.
Though born in a family of middle–class banking business operators, he chose to take a different line of expertise and specialized in art (Lewis and
Buonarroti 24). His works were majorly inspired by the scholars and authors in Lorenzo's intellectual circle. David statue, Sistine Chapel ceiling
paintings, and Pieta statue are some of his most widely recognized works that have lived to be appreciated and studied in diverse walks of life
throughout the world. Studies regarding the artist have depicted that majority of his works showed a combination of psychological insight, physical
realism and a kind of intensity that had never been seen before. People in the Italian Renaissance times were fully aware of his exceptional style of

people wanted Michelangelo to do work for them. In 1501 he decided to return to Florence, city officials hired him to carve a statue that a previous
sculptor never finished. The previous sculptor was working on carving a large Goliath. But Michelangelo decided to carve a large David. Around that
time many artist sculpted images of David after he killed the Goliath, but Michelangelo decided to sculpt David before the fight. (Edsel, Robert. Saving
Italy pg. 146–147) (Jones, Jonathan. The Lost Battles pg. 77–80)
In 1508 Michelangelo was asked to go back to Rome, to paint a fresso on a chapel's ceiling for the Pope who

David Michelangelo Essay

  • 1. David Michelangelo Essay Classical Greek nude statues influenced Renaissance artists, including Michelangelo. Michelangelo copied some of the stances and positions of Greek sculptures in order to reveal the beauty and strength of the human figure. He created sculptures that expressed intellectual and spiritual ideas. The statue 'David' by Michelangelo is a representation of the Biblical hero David. It is a very well–known piece of work which is favoured in Florence. The work captures the ideas of the Greek figures. The David we are presented with is a nude man with a very muscular physique. Michelangelo catches him at the peak of his concentration. He stands relaxed, but alert, resting on a classical pose known as contrapposto. The figure stands with one leg holding Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. Biography of Michelangelo Essay Biography of Michelangelo The second of five brothers, Michelangelo was born on March 6, 1475, at Caprese, in Tuscany, to Ludovico di Leonardo di Buonarotto Simoni and Francesca Neri. The same day, his father noted down: "Today March 6, 1475, a child of the male sex has been born to me and I have named him Michelangelo. He was born on Monday between 4 and 5 in the morning, at Caprese, where I am the PodestГ ." Although born in the small village of Caprese, Michelangelo always considered himself a "son of Florence," as did his father, "a Citizen of Florence." His Childhood and Youth Buonarroti's mother, Francesca Neri, was too sick and frail to nurse Michelangelo, so he was placed with a wet nurse, in a family of stone cutters, ...show more content... In Michelangelo's personal diary he recounts his first two works: "My first work was a small bas–relief, The Madonna of the Stairs. Mary, Mother of God, sits on the rock of the church. The child curls back into her body. She foresees his death, and his return on the stairway to heaven. "My second work, another small relief. My tutor read me the myth of the battle of the Lapiths against the Centaurs. The wild forces of Life, locked in heroic combat. "Already at 16, my mind was a battlefield: my love of pagan beauty, the male nude, at war with my religious faith. A polarity of themes and forms...one spiritual, the other earthly, I've kept these carvings on the walls of my studio to this very day." His patron Lorenzo died in 1492; two years later Michelangelo fled Florence, when the Medici were temporarily expelled. His Studies of Anatomy During the years he spent in the Garden of San Marco, Michelangelo began to study human anatomy. In exchange for permission to study corpses, the prior of the church of Santo Spirito, NiccolГІ Bichiellini, received a wooden Crucifix from Michelangelo. But his contact with the dead bodies caused problems with his health, obliging him to interrupt his activities periodically. The

  • 4. Michelangelo Pieta Essay Michelangelo's Pieta Michelangelo once said, "The true work of art is but a shadow of the divine perfection." These words have uttered in my mind over and over again, as I read them; a man with such talent and grace in his work giving glory to a higher being, whose work is more divine than we can ever imagine. A work of perfection is hard to come by in the lives of mere men, butMichelangelo's Pieta was so close to perfection that the images in which the sculpture portrays almost comes to life. The word Piet means "pity" or "compassion" (The Crucifixion of Christ). The Pieta has come a long way through history and has been appraised by many along the way, but through it all, the good, the bad Pieta still stands with a fascinating story to...show more content... Taking a closer look, we can observe that on Christ's hands and feet there are beautiful veins that give Pieta the appearance having life flow through the sculpture. In addition, when we look at Mary's hand supporting Christ under his arm, Michelangelo thought to have the skin of Christ arm rise up like it would on a real person. There are so many intricate details in this sculpture that I can't physically describe them all. One must wonder what was Michelangelo's inspiration; why did he create the facial expressions he did. Pietas have been done before but none like this. However, the Proportions of Pieta are not entirely natural as we can see clearly their heads are proportionate, but the Virgin Mary has a much larger body. However, Michelangelo was very clever; he was able to over dramatize the folds in Mary's fabric to disguise her actual size. In addition, by making her body much larger, she was able to easily support the weight of her dead son lying in her lap. In these folds, Michelangelo shows his skill and artisanship (Italian Renaissance). Michelangelo used a drill to give depth to the folds in Mary's drapery. This gave the folds a more realistic look that was unpredictable, much like the techniques of the Greeks. I don't know how Michelangelo was able sculpt such magnificent works of art and never sketch out his work before diving in, and chiseling stone away. Michelangelo always thought of stones like this "Every block of stone has a statue inside it Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 5. Michelangelo, A Biography Essay Michelangelo Buonarroti was born on March 6, 1475. He lived almost a full century and died on February 18, 1564; he was still working six days before his death. During his life, the western world underwent what was perhaps the most remarkable period of change since the decline of the Roman Empire. The Renaissance saw changes in all aspects of life and culture, with dramatic reforms sweeping through the worlds of religion, politics, and scientific belief. Michelangelo was one of the advocates of this new philosophy, while creating some of the most beautiful and very famous artwork pieces ever created. He was born at Caprese, in Tuscany, "he was the second of five sons of Lodovico di Leonardo (a civil servant) and Francesca...show more content... Other influences on his young mind included two members of the church: one was his local priest and the other was an opinionated monk named Fra Girolamo Savonarola. Michelangelo first heard Savonarola preach in 1492, the year in which his first patron, Lorenzo de' Medici, died and Michelangelo returned to his father's home. The monk's sermons and his subsequent violent death had a lifelong effect on the artist and many of his works; the loss of Lorenzo also deeply affected his artistic consciousness. At the age of 21, he made his first trip to Rome, a city that was both to play a prominent part in his life and create many frustrations for him. This time he spent five years in the city, creating some of his best known works. "In 1496–97, he completed his first important commission, Bacchus." ( Martindale 78) In 1497–98, Michelangelo created the Pieta, a masterpiece of sculpture that could not be further removed in content from the witty Bacchus. The Pieta is heralded as one of his greatest achievements. The sorrowing face of Mary, contemplating the lifeless body of her eldest child, still wrings the heart today. He took the subject out of a religious context and placed it in a humanist light emphasizing the grief of Mary and the mortality of her dead son. On August 16, 1501, the new republic commissioned Michelangelo to make the statue of David. He was asked to sculpt it from a single block of marble. David is

He is one of the biggest contributors to the development of Western art today. He was also called "the divine one" and "The Renaissance Man". Michelangelo's ancestors before that were small time bankers. The bank that his family was working with failed and his father had to get a temporary governmental job. A couple of months after Michelangelo was born, his family moved back to Florence, Italy. His mother was ill for a long time and died in 1481 when Michelangelo was just six. After this Michelangelo was then commissioned to paint the Battle of Cascina, but at the same time Leonardo was also hired to paint the Battle of Anghiara. Both of the paintings came out completely different, Leonardo's depicted soldiers on horseback and Michelangelo's depicting soldiers being ambushed while bathing in a river. Unfortunately neither the Battle of Cascina or the Battle of Anghiara was completed and both were lost. Michelangelo was too paint a Holy family for Angelo Doni as a present for his wife Maddalena Strozzi. It is now known as Doni Tondo. It is thought that Michelangelo also may have painted Madonna which is called the Manchester Madonna. When the year 1505 hit, Michelangelo was then invited by the newly invited pope, Julius II back to Rome. When he arrived he was commissioned to build the tomb of the Pope, this tomb had forty statues and was planned to be finished in five years. While working on this huge tomb Michelangelo was constantly distracted by other tasks. This caused Michelangelo to go from finishing it in five years to him taking a whole forty Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Shortly after the death of Lorenzo the great Michelangelo moved to Bologna where he proceeded with his studying only to return back to Florence in 1945 to start his sculpting. Later, relocating to Rome in 1498 Michelangelo career was in full swing when he was commissioned to carve the sculpture now known today as Pieta which was a statue of the Virgin Mary holding a lifeless Jesus in her lap after his crucifixion. Returning to Florence Michelangelo had become somewhat popular throughout the city. Taking on a project many other sculptures failed to complete Michelangelo took over the commission for the statue "David", the seventeen foot sculpture was so impressive with its humility and appearance it became a prized possession of the city of Florence. • 10. Michelangelo Essay Michelangelo Michelangelo Buonarrotti, although considered by many a Florentine, was actually born in Caprese, Italy in 1475. Michelangelo was an inspired artist of the Renaissance period. He and Leonardo DaVinci were considered to be the two greatest figures of this highly artistic movement. Michelangelo was a highly versatile artist and was involved in sculpting, architecture, painting, and even poetry. .At the age of 13, he was apprenticed to Domenico Ghirlandaio, who at the time was painting a chapel in the church of Santa Maria Novella in Florence. Here, the young Michelangelo learned the technique of fresco (painting on fresh plaster before it dries); He would use this technique many years later in his work in the Sistine...show more content... During this same time period, Michelangelo produced several Madonnas; including the painting the Holy Family (also known as the Doni Madonna), a statue of the Madonna and Child (called the Bruges Madonna) which was purchased by a Flemish merchant and is now in Bruges, and two marble reliefs, the Taddei tondo and the Pitti tondo. Michelangelo was called to Rome by Pope Julius II to create a tomb for him which was to contain forty lifesize figures, an endeavor that was never fully realized. In 1508, Michelangelo began work on the Sistine Chapel ceiling frescoes, a task that would occupy him until 1512. Upon completing the Sistine Chapel, Michelangelo returned to the work on Julius' tomb, completing the figure of Moses and leaving unfinished two Slaves. Following Julius' death in 1513, he worked for Pope Leo X, Lorenzo de' Medici's son. At the Medici family's parish church in Florence, San Lorenzo, Michelangelo created tombs for Giuliano and Lorenzo de' Medici (II) and designed the Laurentian library, an annex to San Lorenzo. In 1534, Michelangelo left Florence for Rome, where he was to spend the remainder of his life. He returned to the Sistine Chapel where he created the Last Judgment, another fresco, on the end wall. He designed the dome for St. Peter's and the Capitoline Square. He also worked on the Palazzo Farnese. At first glance this sculpture looks like child dead in a mother's arms, which is correct but there is more too it. The sculpture represents the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. Its shows his mother Mary holding him and he lays there dead. A very little detail that usually goes unnoticed is that Mary is not touching her son directly, but a cloth is between the two. This signifies the Higher Renaissance belief in Neoplatonic, that the beauty on earth signifies God's beauty. This masterpiece is not only amazing by the meaning but the glorious detail that Michelangelo was able to go into with practically a hammer and chisel. He also influenced many artists in the Renaissance. He was born in Caprese, Italy in the year of 1475. He considered Florence to be his home at heart. • 13. Michelangelo1 Essay Michelangelo1 Michelangelo is one of the greatest creators in the history of art. Most people recognize the genius for his beautiful sculpture "David" and his breathtaking paintings on the walls and ceiling of the Sistine chapel. However, along with his sculptures and paintings, Michelangelo was an accomplished poet and architect; which is a reflection of his amazing creative ability. Michelangelo was born on March 6, 1475, in a small Italian city, Caprese, but he spent a large portion of his life in Rome, Italy. It was there that Michelangelo created one of the most famous works of art, the marble sculpture, Pieta. A controversially youthful Mary is seated, holding the dead Christ across her lap. The mother holding her dead...show more content... Also, one characteristic of every Pieta, other than Michelango's, is the awkwardness of the Mother and child; the artist solved this common problem by draping Mary in long, flowing clothes and arranging the two bodies to form a pyramid. Michelangelo has had many influential people persuade his works. Hibbard states that with the Pieta, "We sense the debt to [Michelangelo's] Early Renaissance forebears– Verrocchio and Jacopo della Quercia– and of course this is still, chronologically a work of the Quattrocento. Highly finished and polished, it shows a Quattrocento love of detail; linear drapery folds pile up in ornamental abundance" (46) Two items are peculiar about the Michelangelo's Pieta, Mary's youthful face and the artist's signature, which is found only on the Pieta. Common knowledge shows that the artist gave Mary a youthful face because women retain their beauty longer if they are virgins, and perhaps Michelangelo sensed his great accomplishment and felt proud to chisel his name on the work; certainly, it was fitting for such an immaculate work of art. The Pieta is considered untouchable by today's art world; a work that will never be duplicated. Michelangelo's Pieta is one of the most notable works of all time. When Michelangelo moved back to Florence, Italy, the artist created one of his most recognizable sculptures, the David. Sweat dripped from his face and his heart pounded rapidly in his chest as he stepped back to see what he had created. Two years– two long years to finish this piece. What will the result be? He worried that all his work would have been for nothing. Tears swelled in his eyes as he gazed at his work. It was spectacular. The marble seemed to faintly glow in the afternoon sun. When he was a young boy, Michelangelo's father sent him to school to learn grammar, but he did not care for it. His dream was to learn and become skilled at art. His father did not want him to go into this profession because "artists are laborers, no better than shoe makers"(Bonner, Neil. "Michelangelo Buonarroti".Neil Bonner – Thoughts on innovation in government, IT strategy, public policy & culture.). While he was at school, Michelangelo met a boy much older than himself who was friendly and kind to him. His name was Fancesco Granacci and he was learning the art of painting in the Ghirlandaio's studio. Granacci urged Michelangelo to follow his own path and become an apprentice. When Michelangelo told his father of this request and his wish to be apprenticed by the Ghirlandaio brothers, his father went into a rage. Nonetheless, Michelangelo ran away and became an apprentice at the home of Domenico Ghirlandaio at the age of thirteen. He became unsatisfied with the Ghirlandaio brother's teachings because he felt that he wasn't being taught how to paint. Thus, after only two years, left to apprentice under the influence of sculptor Bertoldo di Giovanni. He is one of the greatest artists of all time and is unmatched by any other. Michelangelo is the creator of works of sublime beauty that express the full breadth of human condition. Yet, he was caught between conflicting powers and whims of his patrons, the Medici's of Florence and Papacy's in Rome. These showed that he achieved a personal style at a young age. Michelangelo went to Rome, where he examined many classical statues and ruins that had been newly unearthed. In 1496, he produced his first large–scale sculpture, Bacchus. Following Bacchus, he did the marble Pieta in St. Peter's Basilica. The Pieta was probably one of the most famous works that he finished before he was twenty–five years old. It was said that after it was placed in St. Michelangelo's temper was proverbial, his character difficult, touchy, stubborn, and he often had difficulties in relations with others. After returning to Florence, Michelangelo produced the gigantic fourteen–foot marble David which he worked on for four years. The character of David and what he symbolizes can be described as his patriotic feelings at the time. Florence was going through a difficult period. Michelangelo used David as a model of courage, demonstrating that inner spiritual strength can be more effective than weapons. David is a symbol that represents strength and anger. The statue had intended political connotations for the ruling of the Medici family. Michelangelo used David as model of "heroic courage" to demonstrate that "spiritual strength can be more effective than arms". David is extremely buff, a quality that was highly revered during the Greek and Roman eras, and he shows off the male body very well. He is in a slight contraposto stance, where the artist illustrates the natural counterbalance of the body through the bending of the hips in one direction and the legs in another direction. The well defined muscular build is the ideal form to our culture today. Personally I strive to better myself to be physically strong and muscular in appearance. Though David is a male model, he makes a gorgeous physical role model for me. His facial expression is tense and determined, as it should be before the battle of Goliath. Determination, fighting for what one stands for, is noble and stunning. Unlike the David of Donatello, Michelangelo's David is not shown after conquering his enemy. Instead, he is portrayed as an extremely athletic and manly character; the sculpture even depicts a worried look cast upon David's face and the carved marble veins seem to pulse with anticipation as he contemplates the upcoming fight. Cast over David's shoulder is his sling, and the stone is clutched in his right hand. Michelangelo's David depicts the ideal youth who has just reached manhood and is capable of great physical and intellectual feats, which is part of the classical tradition. Michelangelo's David portrays one man in a very powerful and intelligent light, and even hinting that this one man may be some Get more content on HelpWriting.net

David was frequently portrayed in battle, as well as victorious afterward, either holding a sword or with Goliath's head lying at his feet. Although he later resented this and swore to never sign any of his work again. In 1501 a republic was once again brought to Florence, which received Michelangelo's full support.
