History
of Assam
The history of Assam is the
history of a confluence of people
from the east, west, south and
the north; the confluence of the
Austroasiatic, Tibeto-Burman
(Sino-Tibetan), Tai and Indo-
Aryan cultures. Although invaded
over the centuries, it was never a
vassal or a colony to an external
power until the third Burmese
invasion in 1821, and,
subsequently, the British ingress
into Assam in 1824 during the
First Anglo-Burmese War.

• With the “Tropical Monsoon Rainforest Climate” ,
Assam is temperate (summer max at 95-100 Ferinate or
35-38 celcuis and winter min at 43-46 fernate or 6-8
celcuis ) and experience heavy rainfall and high

downpours reducing summer tempratures and affecting
foggy nights and mornings in winters , frequent during

Festivals and
Traditions in Assam
Bihu is the most important and
common and celebrated all over
Assam. Three Bihus, rongali or bohag,
celebrated with the coming of spring
and the beginning of the sowing
season; kongali or kati, the barren
bihu when the fields are lush but the
barns are empty; and the bhogali or
magh, the thanksgiving when the
crops have been harvested and
the barns are full.

• Assam's economy is based on agriculture and oil. Assam
produces more than half of India's tea. The Assam-Arakan
basin holds about a quarter of the country's oil reserves, and
produces about 12% of its total petroleum. According to the
recent estimates, per capita income in Assam has reached
₹6756 (1993-94 constant prices) in 2004-05, which is still much
lower than India's.

million households in 2001. Higher population concentration
was recorded in the districts of Kamrup, Nagaon, Sonitpur,
Barpeta, Dhubri, Darrang, and Cachar. Assam's population was
estimated at 28.67 million in 2006 and at 30.57 million in 2011
and is expected to reach 34.18 million by 2021 and 35.60
million by 2026.
