We commissioned a small scale research study to
examine public attitudes to food, the environment and
specifically our consumption of meat.
3. Public is aware
Perceived by UK public as moderate or serious
(environmental) threats
• Too much fertiliser (65%)
• Food flown from far away – ‘food miles’ (62%)
• GM (54%)
• Too many animals producing greenhouse gas (52%)
• Too much land to meat production (46%)
4. Meat is in retreat
People should eat less meat in interests of …:
• Protecting environment (40% agree v 21% disagree)
• Reducing obesity (43% v 30%)
• Protecting health (56% v 17%)
5. Behaviour is changing
• I try to eat less processed meat (59% agree v 15%
disagree)
• I try to have at least one day a week when I don’t eat
meat (40% v 21%)
• I am eating less red meat than I was a couple of years
ago (34% v 22%)
