Einstein's
Theory of Relativity
http://www.light2015.org/Home/CosmicLight/Einstein-Centenary.html
2015 celebrated as 100 years
of Publication of Einstein’s
Theoryof Relativity!
Einstein’s Theories of Relativity
revolutionized how Today’s
Scientific world thinks about…..
Space, Time, Mass, Energy and Gravity.
Two Historic subjects catalysed
Einstein’s thoughts…
The Laws of Isaac Newton used to
understand the Physics of Motion!
One…
In 1687, Newton Wrote…
Gravity affects everything in the Universe. The sameforceof
Gravity pulled an apple down from a tree and also kept
the earth in Motion around the sun.
But Newton never puzzled out…
That was the shortfall of Newtonian Genius!
the Source of Gravity!
…an empiricist and skeptic!
David Hume was a Philosopher!
Two…
Einstein’s thinking
about SpaceandTimewere
greatly ignited by
Huma’s 1738 book,
“A Treatise of Human
Nature”
Hume believed that scientific
concepts must be based on…
“Experience and Evidences,
not reason alone!”
“Timedidnot existseparatelyfromtheMovementof
Objects!”
He also believed…
Important to note…
Hume’s concept of TIME…
A sense of Relativity and Variability
imbibed within...
Logically, this propelled Einstein to
intelligently consider TIME as an independent
4th Dimension in his Theoryof Relativity!
Based on these philosophies,
Einstein wrote ….
“It is very well possible that
without these philosophical
studies I would not have
arrived at this situation!”
Prior to Einstein…
The space was filled with
Luminiferous aether [LA].
scientist’s concept of spaceand
lightspeed was…
LA causes the change in Speedof Light
depending on the relative motion of
the Source and Observer!
In 1905 Einstein proposed a new
theory based on two principles…
1] The laws of physics are the same
for all non-accelerating observers!
2] The speed of light in a vacuum was
independent of the motion of all observers.
He calculated Speed of light
= 186,000 miles/sec!
As a result of these principles,
Einstein deduced that...
…there is no Fixed Frame of
Reference in the Universe.
Everything is moving Relative to everything else!
This is known as SpecialRelativitybecause it
applies only to special cases to…
…frames of reference in
constant, unchanging motion.
This Created the basis for…
Theory of general Relativity.
Einstein then spent 10 years
thinking and trying to include
acceleration in the theory.
Finally in 1915, Einstein published the GeneralTheory
of Relativity, which applies to…
Frames that are accelerating with regardto eachother.
And, he determined that…
Massive objects cause a distortion in
space-time-network, which is felt as gravity.
He conceptualised TIME as...
Time does not pass at the same rate for everyone.
A fast-moving observer measures time passing more
slowly than a [relatively] stationary observer would.
To visualise the TIME concept…
The Moving Watch
runs more slowly than
the Stationary Watch!
This phenomenon is called
time dilation!
A fast moving object appears Shorter
along the direction of Motion relative to
slow-moving one!
This effect is very negligible until the
Object moves close to Speed of Light!
Einstein's Derived his famous equation…
E = mc2
Mass and Energy are different
manifestations of the same thing.
Einstein's Model considered
4 dimensions...
 Space [3-dimensions]
 Time as the fourth dimension.
So, TIME considered
as variable!
Space and Time are part of
one continuum….
…called space-time.
In Einstein’s model…
Space-time can be thought of as a gridor fabric, knitted
intrinsically with SpaceandTimethreads.
Rubber sheet model is a
popular visualization.
Now, presence of any Mass
distorts the Fabric, that is
space-time.
Now how RelativityTheoryexplains the
source of Gravity...
The Gravity results from massive
objects warping space-time.
The warp is called a
gravitywell.
There are so many masses
within the Universe.
So, Universe is full of Gravity Well.
Einstein's theoryof generalrelativity predicted that the space-
time around Earth would be not only warped but
also twisted by the planet's rotation.
Gravity Probe-B showed this to be correct.
Orbiting objects follow the shortest path
as require theleastamountof energy.
In our solar system, The planets move in
elliptical path, the most energy-efficient
path in the gravitywellof the sun.
Gravity bends light.
This phenomenon is called
Gravitational Lensing.
the Gravity of Matter between Earth and the Galaxy
causes light rays to bend into different paths.
When we observe a distant Galaxy…
When the light reaches the Telescope,
multiple images of the same Galaxy appear.
And that’s why…
And that’s why…
Thanks for watching!
