1. Wild and full of life
from start to finish
“The Swiss Army
Man”
Rarely does a film leave one so stunned yet
confused after leaving the theater. On the
drive home you will be contemplating
whether or not that was one of the best
movies you have ever see or the weirdest.
However, the word weird sometimes gets a
bad rap. The film opens up with an island
setting and deserted man named Hank who
has seemingly lost all hope of being found.
As Hank plans to end it all, he spots a body
washed up on shore. Soon Hank discovers
this body is more than meets the eye and has
a name. Hank and Manny form an
unexpected bond while trying to get back
home. There are lessons of life, love and
loss along the way, in a film that breaks the
boundaries of where movies can go both
literary and visually. Starring Paul Dano as
Hank and Danielle Radcliffe as Manny,
Swiss Army Man is already being hailed as
the most bizarre movie to come through the
Sundance Festival. Critics have generable
favorable reviews of the film with David
Sims of the Atlantic hailing, “The film
recalls Michel Gondry’s on practical yet
dreamlike visual magic, with a very
American gross-out twist.” You may
recognize Paul Dano from the recently
released and acclaimed “Love and Mercy”
in 2015, where he played Beach Boy genius
Brain Wilson. As well as playing Wilson,
Dano is also acclaimed for his work as Eli
Sunday, the formidable opponent of Daniel
day-Lewis in “There Will Be Blood” in
2007. However, it is Daniel Radcliffe who
shines most as he may finally be able to
shake the Potter image, at least for now. For
2. a role that doesn’t give any use of normal
mobility or normal “anything”, Daniel
brings a refreshing human take to his role.
Directed by Daniel Kwan, Daniel Scheinert,
the younger audience might know them by
their music video for the song “Turn down
for what” by Lil Jon in 2014. Together they
craft an undoubtedly unique vision that is
sure to spur future ideas for years to come.
Fans of the Potter series will undoubtedly
come in bus loads to see the boy who lived
in action but I believe they will get a lot
more than they bargained for. “The Swiss
Army Man” was released to theaters July 1,
2016.
