PRESENTED BY

M.Pharm 2nd semester
ROLL NO-007
TOPIC-ASCARIS LUMBRICOIDES
Assam Down Town University,Guwahati-26
3. Introduction-
°Ascaris lumbricoides is the largest nematode (round worm) parasiting the
human intestine.
°There is more common in Children then is Adult.
°Ascaris Lumbricoides is an intestinal worm found in the small intestine of Man.
°Causing the Disease is Known as Ascariasis.
°As many as 500 to 5000 Adult worm may in hibit the
Single host.
°It has been reported from Pigs,Cattle and Squirrels.
°Common name-Giant Intestinal Round Worm.
°Host-Definitive host-Human or Pigs,
Intermediate-None host.
°Location- Adult worm-In small intestine
°Infective stage-Ovum.
4. Geography-
World wide.
Prevalence is underdevloped Country that have poor
Senitations.(Parts Asia,South America)
Occur during rainy months tropical and South tropical
Countries.
Even occur in rural area in the United States.
5. Morphology-
°It is consist in Two forms
°Adult
°Egg
°Adult-It is elongated,cylindrical
tapering at both ends.
°Sexes are separates.
°The female is longer than male
20cm -30cm long and 4.6 mm in diameter.
° Male is small being 15-30cm long.2.4mm is diameter.
°The mouth open at the enterior end.
6. Egg-
Fertilized Egg
UnFertilized Egg
°Fertilized Egg-It is round
and oval in shape.
°It is bile stained and thus
brownish in colour.
°Unfertilized Egg-It is narrower
and longer.
°It is contains small atropical
ovum.
°It is thin shelled.
7. Transmission-
Ascaris lives in the intestine and Ascaris eggs are passed in
the feces of infected persons. If the infected person defecates
outside (near bushes, in a garden, or field), or if the feces of an
infected person are used as fertilizer, then eggs are deposited
on the soil.
8. Life cycle-
°Site of inhabitation,small intestine.
°Infective stage embryonated egg.
°Route of infection by mouth.
°Number intermediate reserviour.
°Life spam of the adult about one year.
Stages 1-Sexually measures female produces as many as egg
per day which are shed along with un embryonated form.
Stage 2- infective larva develop with in egg about 3-6 weeks.
Stage3-Human infection and liberation of larvae.
Stage 4-Migration of larvae.
Stage 5-Re-entry to stomach and small intestine.
9.
10. Pathogenesis-
The pathogenesis of ascariasis is generally related to organ
damage and host reactions to larval migration as well as the
number and location of adult worm in the body.
Ascaris larvae migrating through the intestinal mucosa, liver and
lungs provoke hypersensitivity reaction in the human host.
12. Lab diagnosis-
Specimen stool sputum.
Microscopy.
X ray.
Ultrasonography and CT scan.
Serodiagnosis.
Other test-Blood shown peripheral eosinophiles.
13. Treatment-
Mebandazole.
Albendazole.
Levamisole.
There are a number of home remedies for ascariasis. Garlic,
wormwood, pumpkin seeds, and many other herbs have been
used to treat ascariasis.
14. Prophylaxis-
Education of children in school sanitory laws and
hygiene.
Proper disposal of human faeces.
Hand should be properly soap washed before eating.
Conclusion: Sonography can be helpful in diagnosing the
presence of worms, its complications and in evaluating response
to treatment. Early surgical intervention in those with worm
bolus, peritonism, and volvulus may salvage bowel and reduce
mortality.
