 Antidote – “Antidote are the drugs which are
used in the treatment of poisoning ”
 Poisoning – Poisoning means entry of poison
inside the body.
 Poison – It is defined as any substance
administered by any route of
administration produces ill health,
disease or death.

 Classification based on mechanism of action
1. Physiological antidote
e.g – Sodium nitrite
2. Chemical antidote
e.g – Sodium thiosulphate

1. Physiological antidote :-
They act by producing opposite effect to that of
poison.

2. Chemical antidote :-
They act by combining with poison & changes
chemical nature of poison.

3. Mechanical antidote :-
They act by preventing absorption of poison into
the body.
