Texts are written for different
reasons/purposes. Today, we will learn
how to identify texts that describe or
classify. These are called descriptive or
classification texts. Below is a table which
shows the purpose of descriptive and
classification texts, structures, and
language features used.
Descriptive and classification texts have the
same language features. Both use
descriptive words to describe and or
classify the topic at hand. They differ
slightly differ in purpose since classification
text is written to classify things into sub-
categories while descriptive texts simply
described places, actual event, or objects.
The given example is a descriptive text because it
describes Brownie, a dog. Its purpose is to describe
since it gives us a clear picture of what Brownie is. The
language features used are descriptive words written in
bold – small, fluffy, cute, thick, brown and soft.
Another language feature observed is the use of simple
present tense written in italics – is, call, has, cuddle,
feels, eats, give, plays, get, and fight.
Here is an example of a text that
classifies.
This example is a classification text type
because it classifies the types of dogs. It
also describes each type of classifications.
As you can see, it also uses simple present
tense written in italics – are and include.
Examples are given to describe each of the
classifications.
Directions: Match the items on the right to
the items on the left.
Directions: Read each of the following sentences. Put a / on the blank
before each number if it is necessary in implementing school health and
nutrition program and X if it is not.
_____ 1. Eat a balance diet with plenty of fruits and vegetable, whole
grains, plants and animal proteins and healthy fats.
_____ 2. Keeping hydrated is essential for overall health.
_____ 3. Practice safe food hygiene to minimize the risk of foodborne
illness. Wash your hand for 20 seconds with soap before and after
preparing and eating food.
_____ 4. Get enough quality sleep. Established a regular sleep schedule
and keep it on weekends and when working at home.
Directions: Read each paragraph carefully
then answer the questions that follow. Write
your answers in your activity notebook.

however, they can usually be classified as either public,
private religious, private non-religious, or alternative.
Public schools are funded by the government. Private
religious schools are based around a particular faith, such
as Catholicism, Judaism, and so forth. Alternative schools
can be made up of a variety of different categories, such as
the Montessori program or technical schools. Most
students who attend class in an actual school building go to
one of these types of institutions.

Commonly used
classification of text is the
one based on purpose and
meaning. In this
classification, there are 3
main categories:
Directions: Read carefully the short text. Find out if it is an Argumentative,
Narrative or Expository by explaining, giving facts and information. Do this in your
answer sheet.
There are many theories about why the dinosaurs vanished from the
planet. One theory that many people believe is that a gigantic meteorite
smashed into the Earth. Scientists believe that the meteorite was very big
and that the impact may have produced a large dust cloud that covered the
Earth for many years. The dust cloud may have caused plants to not receive
sunlight and the large plant eaters, or herbivores, may have died off, followed
by the large meat eaters, or carnivores. This theory may or may not be true,
but it is one explanation as to why these giant reptiles no longer inhabit the
Earth.
