P
ROGRAM Poyod
dimulai sejak Januari
2019. Para peserta
mengikuti lokakarya
di FSRD ITB. Di
program ini setiap peserta menda-
pat ilmu pengetahuan dan
peningkatan kemampuan untuk
mendesain. Mereka mengikuti be-
ragam kegiatan yang berkaitan
dengan industri furnitur, desainer
furnitur, aktivitas internasional,
dan membangun jejaring di Kam-
pus ITB.
Pada pameran ”Venture”, lewat
desain furnitur para desainer
mengeksplorasi keindahan alam
dan budaya. Karya mereka lahir
lewat proses yang terinspirasi dari
lingkungan di sekitar. Hasilnya,
enam desain kursi yang tak hanya
memiliki fungsi tetapi juga nilai
artistik yang kental.
Salah satunya ”Palabo Chair”
yang didesain Iwan Hamdan yang
disupervisi oleh Deny Willy J, MT,
PhD. Dalam keterangan karya di-
tuliskan, karya Iwan terinspirasi
dari terumbu karang di dalam laut.
Dia membuat kursi santai dengan
material kayu yang disusun seperti
puzzle.
Bulatan-bulatan kayu dibubuhi
warna koral, seperti hijau, kuning,
biru, dan oranye. Karya ini me-
representasikan sifat terumbu
karang yang cantik, sarat warna,
dan kerap ditemukan tak terduga.
Dalam bentuk sofa bulat, ada
karya desainer Calvin Renang
Anak Tumbai yang berjudul
”Malama Chair”. Karya ini disu-
pervisi Yogie Candra Bhumi, SDs,
MDs. Dibalut warna biru yang
segar, furnitur ini terilhami dari
bunga semalu. Menurut Calvin, dia
memilih bentuk bunga semalu
karena bunga ini memiliki ke-
unikan. Selain warna dan anatomi
bunga yang cantik, daun bunga ini
juga akan mengerut saat disentuh
untuk melindungi diri.
Bentuk bulat yang dipakai mem-
perlihatkan pengguna kursi ini
bisa merasa aman dan nyaman
saat duduk. Aksen bulat yang ter-
dapat di tengah sofa menunjukkan
kehangatan. Ditopang kaki kayu,
sofa mungil ini kuat tetapi tetap
ringan jika dipindahkan atau di-
geser.
Flora dan fauna
Terinspirasi dari semut, desainer
Mohd Sazrin Bin Jamali membuat
”Sanam Chair”. Dibalut warna hi-
tam, ”Sanam Chair” dibuat dari
material organik. Karakter semut
yang hidup bergotong royong dan
berkoloni menjadi pengaruh uta-
ma desain kursi ini.
Bentuk kaki semut diaplikasikan
di kaki kursi yang memanjang.
Tekstur dan bentuk badan semut
menjadi inspirasi utama bentuk
badan kursi. Penggunaan warna
hitam di seluruh badan dan kaki
kursi menguatkan identitas semut
di karya ini.
Manik-manik suku Dayak men-
jadi inspirasi Rudy Edi dalam
membuat ”Talaba Chair”. Rudy
mendesain furnitur ini karena
sering melihat aktivitas nelayan di
tempat tinggalnya yang dekat pan-
tai.
Rudy menemukan banyak per-
samaan antara Malaysia dan Indo-
nesia. Salah satunya yaitu penggu-
naan manik-manik yang dia lihat
di Sarawak dan Kalimantan. Ran-
cangan karya Rudy berbentuk
manik-manik besar terbuat dari
kayu yang dia rangkai sampai
menjadi bentuk kursi santai di tepi
pantai.
Kembali terinspirasi dari bentuk
bunga, ada karya Robica Tingang
yang berjudul ”Pida Chair”. Seperti
kelopak bunga yang sedang mekar,
Robica membuat bentuk sandaran
kursi yang nyaman. Di bagian
tengah kursi terdapat bantalan
empuk. Bentuk kursi yang terbuka
ini seperti mengundang siapa pun
untuk duduk nyaman.
Desainer Ayu Moriadza mende-
sain ”Bita Chair” yang terinspirasi
dari air bungkus ikat tepi. Di
Malaysia, air bungkus ikat tepi
merupakan minuman yang ditaruh
di dalam plastik dan diikat tali
rafia. Minuman ini mengingatkan
Ayu pada masa kecilnya. Lewat de-
sain karyanya, Ayu ingin membuat
furnitur yang memberi kenya-
manan sekaligus ruang privat bagi
penggunanya. (Windy Eka

Editor's Notes
The Sarawak government is committed to ensuring a sustainable timber industry as a high percentage of the state’s export revenue is derived from timber and timber products.
However, the industry readiness, particularly furniture manufacturer to respond to current global furniture market challenge (trend and technology) requires massive development and exposure to design trend and lifestyle.
The furniture industries awareness towards design value is still trying to grow because of pursuing a comfort job order business than to challenge development of new products as a media for design promotion and national image.
In 2018 an agreement was signed between Sarawak Timber Industry Development and Corporation (STIDC) and Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB) to improve the ability of Sarawak Young Designers (SayD’signers) to learn more about furniture design from various aspects through one year-term furniture design training program under 10 years collaboration.
Duration of the program is one-full year program (two academic semesters).
In giving greater emphasis and focus on the growth and value-added development especially in the furniture industry sector, in 2018 an agreement was signed between Sarawak Timber Industry Development and Corporation (STIDC) and Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB) to improve the ability of SAYDESIGNERS to learn more about furniture design from various aspects through one year-term furniture design training program organized by Faculty of Art and Design ITB (FSRD ITB).
In the first semester these designers work on the task of making chairs with wood as the main material. Meanwhile in the second semester they made furniture sets using a combination of wood and bamboo or rattan.
FSRD ITB has known to be a good design school with high reputation in the field of design globally and has produced some prominents designers that boosted and has been shaping Indonesian local creative industry through their design.
The outcome of the this program is to allow SAYDESIGNERS members to enhance their skills on R&D (research and development) in timber utilisation, enhancement and international networking.
SARADEC SAYD members were enrolled as trainee at Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB) to kick-start their second year training program in furniture design. This training is to enhance SAYDESIGNERS member’s knowledge and skill in designing with international and industry exposure through ITB networks.
POYOD members were introduced to all ITB’s facilities that may support all of their training activities.

Rudy Edi (Supervisor: Prabu Wardono, M. Des., Ph.D.)
Product Name: TALABA
For the TALABA chair design, the designer encouraged ideas from members of his local community, and the project was inspired by the question “How can we improve our community?” Since the designer’s hometown is situated near the ocean, it is quite likely that he was inspired by the fishermen’s community itself. Subsequently, he has been intrigued by the similarities he has discovered between Malaysia and Indonesia. He realised that the beads used by the Dayak ethnic peoples can also be found in both Sarawak and Kalimantan. With that information, he combined those beads using his fisherman’s skill at fixing fishnets and became a weaver. Like killing two birds with one stone, this TALABA chair design benefits the manufacturer but directs considerable benefit to the community as well. As such, the manufacturer will fabricate the main structure of the chair frame, and the sewing tasks will be performed by members of the community.
Robica Tingang (Supervisor: Dr. Imam Santosa, M.Sn.)
Product Name: PIDA
This product provides a strong visual impression of a wide-open chair that is inviting and welcoming, and it is imbued with the character of a blooming flower that is irresistible to pollinating bees. PIDA was designed to present a side view in which the armrest and chair leg are combined to resemble the flowers in a bouquet. The curved shape around the armrest provides enough seating space to offer a comfortable welcome to anyone looking to sit in this chair, and it manages to combine all of this with an added emphasis on value for the consumer.
Iwan Hamdan (Supervisor: Deny Willy J., M.T., Ph.D.)
Product Name: PALABO
For this new collection, the designer found inspiration from the coral reef. This is represented as a beautiful undersea ecosystem with colourful scenes in which reef inhabitants are shown in varying relationships within the groupings. The PALABO chair brings these characteristics of coral reefs together so they are represented by a palette in which beauty, colour, and a degree of randomness are the key features.
Sazrin Jamali (Supervisor: Harry Anugrah Mawardi, M.Ds.)
Product Name: SANAM
The designer was inspired by the ant when developing his new chair collection named SANAM. The organised colonies and social characteristics of the ant exert direct influences on the design and the ant leads the designer to use the insect’s organic shape to explore and achieve the design.
In this way, the leg of the ant lends its shape to the base of the chair and constitutes a unique aspect of the product. The texture and shape of the ant’s body also inform the pattern of the upholstery and the colour of the product.
Ayu Mortadza (Supervisor: Deny Willy J., M.T., Ph.D.)
Product Name: LIESCA SEMI DINING SET
The concepts “sweet” and “delicious” provide the designer with inspiration based on the characteristics of foods being enjoyed. Various defining characteristics of food, such as chewy, crunchy, and melting, create the essence of the design.
Delighted by these attributes, the designer captured them with the design of the LlESCA semi-dining set and used a combination of cushions and fitrit rattan to imbue the material with these concepts. Some parts are interchangeable to ensure user satisfaction and, with regard to technical aspects, the product is designed for easy mass production.
Robica Tingang (Supervisor: Harry Anugrah Mawardi, M.Ds.)
Product Name: KYIE CHAIR & TABLE
The KYIE collection presents a smooth form with a twist structure and is reminiscent of a continuous line of marshmallows. The designer chose as a model these small sweets we can eat while sharing with others, since they can bring happiness to everyone. The curved and oval form of this series is designed to balance the overall design and convey various impressions to the user. With round and welcoming shapes, the set emphasises the combined characters of rattan and wood she wished to apply to this design.
