Ready to migrate to 7.0? Attend this session to learn:
• Benefits of moving from Denodo 6.x to 7.0
• Key considerations and best practices
• How Denodo Services can help with the migration effort
5. 5
Why Denodo 7.0?
• Latest and greatest version of Denodo Platform
• Compelling new capabilities
• New Denodo Solution Manager
• MPP Query Acceleration
• Dynamic Data Catalog
• Many more enhancements and improvements
• Bug fixes and patch roll ups, etc.
• Denodo 6 plus much, much more…
7. 7
The Four Steps…
Step 1 – Get educated on Denodo 7.0
Step 2 – Planning for the Solution Manager
Step 3 – Configuring MPP Query Acceleration
Step 4 – Think ‘Data Steward’ for the Dynamic Data Catalog
8. 8
Step 1 – Get Educated!
Before you start…
• Read the Denodo 7.0 Migration Guide
• It contains very important information
• Read this before you do anything else!
• Attend the ‘Upgrade to 7.0’ training course
• Focused 2 hour course from the Denodo Training Team
• Available on-demand and virtual classroom
• If necessary, use Denodo Professional Services to assist you
with your migration

Step 2 – Planning for the Solution Manager
License Management
• Solution Manager changes the way that you manage and
deploy Denodo environment
• Manage, promote across unified infrastructure
• Changes license management & IP restrictions
• Depending on your deployment architecture you will need
one or more Solution Managers
• Denodo strongly recommends a single Solution
Manager instance
• Provides a ‘global’ view of your Denodo deployment
10. 10
Step 2 – Planning for the Solution Manager
License Management
• Map your deployment architecture
• Denodo Solution Manager should be running on a separate
server – not shared with VDP instance
• Configure Solution Manager for HA if required
• Plan for single Solution Manager…unless:
• Need HA configuration
• Denodo is deployed in physically separate locations with
no or restricted connectivity between locations
• Most deployments will only need single Solution Manager
instance
12. 12
Step 2 – Planning for the Solution Manager
• When you request your ‘upgrade’ licenses
• Specify the number of Solution Manager instances
that you are going to deploy
• And, how your Denodo licenses will be split amongst
them
• Using the previous example
• We have 1 Solution Manager with all 32 production
cores (and 44 non-prod cores) assigned to it
• The Support Team will send the licenses to be loaded into
the Solution Manager
13. 13
Step 3 – Configuring MPP Query Acceleration
• Using an existing Hadoop or Spark cluster for query
acceleration is a new features in Denodo 7.0
• Take advantage of parallel processing with
Hadoop or Spark for certain operations
• Denodo has cluster sizing recommendations and an
MPP acceleration configuration guide
• Available on Denodo Community Portal
• Read them carefully and follow them ☺
14. 14
Step 3 – Configuring MPP Query Acceleration
• The Denodo Platform must be co-located with the
Hadoop/Spark cluster
• Minimize latency when moving data from
Denodo to cluster for processing
• Same LAN segment as Hadoop/Spark cluster
• For AWS EMR, Denodo should be running on a
cluster Edge Node
• Just being in the same AZ might not be enough
15. 15
Step 4 – Think ‘Data Steward’ with Dynamic Data Catalog
• Denodo 7.0’s Dynamic Data Catalog allows data
assets (views) to be categorized and tagged
• Data Catalog ‘admin’ role to manage categories and
tags
• Think ‘Data Steward’ type role
• Who fills this role in your organization?
• Should they have admin privileges for the Data
Catalog?
Note future Denodo 7.0 updates will introduce new roles for maintaining categories
and tags and for tagging data sets…start thinking about this now!
16. 16
Step 4 – Visibility in the Dynamic Data Catalog
• A recent Denodo 6.0 update included a new user
permission – ‘Metadata’
• Now an important feature of the Data Catalog
• Metadata permission allows users to view the Denodo
view schema
• But not to execute queries and see the actual data
• Decide what type of visibility you want to give to users via
Data Catalog
• Full ‘Metadata’ permissions, but limit read access?
• No ‘Metadata’ permissions? (Security through
obscurity)
