Masaya, Nicaragua: Hotels, Markets And Transportation
Masaya, Nicaragua, is a city that is just south associated with Managua as well as northwest
associated with Granada. It is an economical spot to choose for an overnight stay. If you stay for a
couple of times , you will have time for you to go to see the nearby Masaya Volcano, the overlook
from Lake Apoyo and you can store at the two markets they've in town. I've been there many times ,
and have gone to three different places to invest the night. All of the hotels as well as bed as well as
breakfasts are cheaper than you will find in nearby Granada; and in some cases, the caliber of the
room as well as services is actually superior. Therefore , you can use it like a point associated with
access to either Managua or even Granada, taking either have a taxi (expensive ) or a inexpensive
bus.
Below i share a number of my pictures of items in the markets associated with Masaya and some
specific information about the marketplaces and hotels that I possess visited presently there. I also
mention some inexpensive transportation tips that you can use to get at Granada and to and in the
Costa Rica border when you go as well as return from Masaya. A link to a search engines interactive
map is included to help you locate the places which are mentioned in the article.
There is what is actually call the Mercado Antigua (also known as the Mercado Viejo, or old market)
in the central part of town, about 1 prevent east of the central square. This old stone creating was
initially built in 1891 and has already been renovated following fires that occurred in 1966 and the late
seventies , the later on occurring during the civil battle that Ortega was top against Somoza.
This market, specified as map marker # 8, has many impartial shops within it, as well as a cultural
center where they've traditional dances and music performances. I happened to be presently there
one day when there was the performance which also had some of the participants of the skip
Teenage world Competition as well.
The arts, crafts and leather goods on this market are priced a bit higher that you will find in the Main
market which is a couple of blocks to the east. But it's more roomy , or not as likely to make you really
feel claustrophobic. You'll find boa constrictor and alligator boots, poultry baskets (produced from a
whole feathered chicken, including the head), major preserved toads, jewelery, clothing and paintings
- all of good quality.
Main market. This market , map marker # 7 , is enormous. There are hundreds of shops presently
there which can overwhelm new visitors. There are also dining places towards the back again. On the
western side, you'll find cobblers making shoes, handbags and belts. Bins associated with unnamed
therapeutic herbs are displayed nearby in one small section -- where you can also find disciplines and
crafts.
A large portion of this market provides clothes and shoes, however , you can find tools and electronic
accessories right here too, such as knock-off Casio watches. Final time i was in Masaya, there was a
religious parade through the narrow aisles final time while I was presently there. However, it was not
a friendly one, because bystanders have been in the section were actually pushed out of the way by a
group of people chanting as well as carrying an icon of the Virgin jane.
Below you find more photos of items found in the market , and other stuff you can see nearby.

If you have never seen Volcan Masaya or the overlook at Caterina, make some time for you to do so.
Each of the sites are breath-taking and you can drive right up to them. Masaya Volcano is simply
west associated with town and the road on this national park goes all the way to the crater lip.
(perhaps it is the just handicap-accessible volcano crater on the planet ?) You can see steam rising
all the time from this crater, and you can backpack up to an overlook for a bird's eye view. The photo
shown to the remaining was taken from that point. When i visited, i was told thay during the municipal
war, some of the Somoza loyalists were come to this site as well as thrown into the crater.
South associated with town, there's a rise in height and a cooler climate. Switching left into the town
of Caterina, you go up and right into a park that overlooks lake Apoyo. This particular crater lake is
quite beautiful and you can possess a restaurant dinner there as well. Crafts are also sold through
various suppliers in stores and on foot. Just state "no, gracias!" if you don't desire to be bothered.
Both of those sites are pinned on the interactive map link supplied above. Just zoom out.
I possess stayed in three different places in Masaya, two of which i suggest. For those on a tight
budget , I recommend staying in the Hostal Mirador p los Arcangeles (map stage # 4 ), which is a
prevent and a half northern of the Mercado Antigua. It is $25 per night during the time of this
composing and $5 more with regard to air conditioning. The rooms are small, however comfortable
sufficient , and I was quite comfortable without the a/c.
If you want to spend your time here in luxurious , there is a little bed as well as breakfast which i
highly recommend. Additionally , you will find it recommended on TripAdvisor. This converted colonial
home , known as Hotel casa Robleto (map point # 3), is actually $60 per night and it has a king-size
bed in a very large space with a roomy bathroom. There are not many rooms right here , so if you
want to go, be sure you contact frank Robleto to make a reservation beforehand. Click on the link to
find his number as well as email address. Finding the hotel/B&b may be hard , because when i was
presently there , there was absolutely no sign. However , it is across from the cruz Azul upon San
Jeronimo Avenue.
I have found two restaurants that i'm enthusiastic about in the region. One is the Mexican restaurant
that is on the same block as the hostal. Your meals are great which is spicy, something I skip in
regular Costa Rican cuisie. I can not remember the title , but its area is marked on the map.
If you want to capture a trip to Granada, you can have a very good meal in the Zauguan, which is
behind the central chapel. The Zauguan has a barbeque grill and serves very good steaks. I have
also eaten the guapote fish , caught from Lake Nicaragua there. A photograph is consist of of this
meal , which was ample for two people. The servers are very mindful and non-intrusive.
Both of these dining places are affordable and worth the effort to visit. You can also find additional
restaurants helping Nicaraguan conventional foods, like the nacatamale, which is huge and it is filled
with chicken and poultry. I had 1 for breakfast every day and was overwhelmed with its size. As with
other main American tamales, it was covered with a banana leaf.
Taxis are good with regard to in-town shuttling around, but the markets and the restaurants i've
mentioned are all within a couple of blocks walking distance. A taxi costs about 15 to 30 cordobas to
get to the edge of city , or the Esso service train station , where you can have a bus. The price of the
bus is about ten to fifteen cordobas. The exchange price with dollars is about 23 cordobas per dollar.
You also have the option of the horse-drawn carriage. Sometimes, there's also bicycle taxis. The cars
, carriages as well as motorcycles all compete with regard to space on the narrow streets. But they
get on for the most part. I've heard attitudes flare once or twice , however.
If you want to capture a taxi either to Granada or even Managua, it can cost from $25 up-wards. If
you are not carrying luggage or gear , the buses are a practical cheaper option. You may have to face
up, however. I have also taken open public buses (converted school buses ) to the frontier of panama
and nicaragua ,. These bus trips cost from $5 to $7 per person. Gringos may get charged a little more
, just because.....
Note: Don't depart your bags hanging upon luggage shelves without losing sight of them. There are
sly thieves that may block your own line of sight and snatch them before you decide to know what's
happening. This is true all all through Central America. Therefore , go light when you have a bus,
carrying your things in your clapboard.
