Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a group of conditions that cause inflammation in the colon and small intestine. The two principal types are Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. Specific bacteria have been found to work with the gut microbiome to cause IBD. Crohn's disease can affect other parts of the digestive system besides the colon and ileum, and causes ulcers and fistulas. Recent evidence suggests certain bacteria may play a role in triggering Crohn's disease.

3.  The Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) is a group
of inflammatory conditions of the colon and
small intestine.
 Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis are the
principal types of Inflammatory Bowel Disease.
 Specific species of bacteria such as Klebsiella
pneumoniae and Proteus mirabilis appear to
work in concert with the indigenous gut
microbial community to cause IBD.

 It is important to note that not only does Crohn’s
disease affect the small intestine and large
intestine, it can also affect the mouth,
oesophagus, stomach and the anus.
 It is observed that there is a role of
mycobacteria in the onset of Crohn’s disease and
more recently it was suggested that a particular
subtype of Escherichia coli could play a
pathogenic role in Crohn’s disease
