2. INTRODUCTION
Far from their homes and loved ones, in the cold winds of
frosty Siachen or the heat waves of hot Rajasthan or the
hilly terrain of Arunachal, are soldiers on guard to protect
our Republic while we are in our cozy home.
Here are some of the stories about the Indian Army that
will make us make you realize how much we take our
freedom for granted.

Maharashtra on 14 October 1950
He died in the Battle of
Basantar during the Indo-Pakistan War

7. VICE ADMIRAL KRISHNAN
“A SAILOR’S STORY” Vice Admiral Nilakanta Krishnan
Padma Bhushan, DSC , PVSM (1919-January 1982) was
Flag Officer Commanding in Chief of Eastern Naval
Command during 1971 Indo-Pakistani War.
Krishnan was concerned about one of India’s greatest and
most formidable carriers, INS Vikrant, being threatened
by the presence of Pakistan’s destructive Ghazi
submarine in the Bay of Bengal. So he decided to deceive
the Pakistani Navy into believing that INS Vikrant was in
the port of Vizag by getting an ageing destroyer INS
Rajput to pretend to be Vikrant by sailing it out of Vizag
and generating heavy wireless traffic. The Pakistanis fell
for the trap. Ghazi was ordered to change directions and
move to Vizag.
Vice Admiral Krishnan also wrote an autobiography – “A
SAILOR’S STORY”.
8. CAPTAIN MAHENDRA NATH
MULLA AND REAR ADMIRAL
RISHI RAJ SOOD
Thirty five years ago, the INS Khukri went down in the
Arabian Sea after being torpedoed by a Pakistani
submarine. Eighteen officers and 176 sailors went down
with it, including the ship’s captain Mahendra Nath Mulla.
He was the first captain of independent India’s navy to go
down with his ship.
Maj. General (retd) Ian Cardozo has authored a book
about the incident and while speaking at the book launch,
he said, “He (Capt. Mulla) was aware that the majority of
his officers and men were trapped below deck. Being the
man that he was, he knew that it was not right for him to
save himself while his sailors went to a watery grave. In
those few moments he helped as many as he could, and
then went down with his ship. In this brave and heroic
action, Captain Mulla teaches us not only how to live, but
how to die.”
9. “During the hostilities with Pakistan in
December 1971, Commander Rishi Raj Sood
was the commanding officer of one of the
Indian naval ships, which participated in
operations in the Arabian Sea. His ship formed
part of an anti-submarine attack force, which
was involved in hunting and killing enemy
submarines.
When INS Khukri received multiple torpedo
hits from an enemy submarine, Commander
Sood rushed his ship into a counter-attack on
the enemy submarine. The attack was
conducted so fiercely and relentlessly that the
enemy submarine could not carry out any
further attack and had to make a retreat.”
10. AIR MARSHAL M. S. BAWA
In the battle of Longewala, when it was
getting difficult for Indian infantry to hold
the Pakistani Force for a long time, Indian
air force's Hawker Hunter fighter jet got
ready for face to face combat with
Pakistani Tanks regiment. And with the
first light of the morning Indian Hawker
Hunters take off for the battle field. Six
Hawker Hunters was participating in this
mission under the command of Air
Marshal M. S. Bawa. And Pakistani tank
was burst like pluck chickens after Indian
Fighter Air Crafts Came on them.
11. AN INCREDIBLE LOVE STORY
OF TWO AIR WARRIORS
It all began in January 2002. Deepika Dadlani had
just joined for her second term of training in the
Air Force Academy, and Ronald Kevin Serrao was in
the final term - a senior most trainee cadet in the
Academy - an office bearer.
As all good things come to an end, the training
days were soon over and they were never posted at
the same base since.
Distance makes the hearts grow fonder’ they say
and so, their relationship blossomed despite the
distance. Ron and Deepika got engaged in
December 2004 and in April 2006 they tied the
knot. They were not posted at the same base or
region even after their wedding which made them
steal weekends to see each other.
12. • BUT THINGS DON’T ALWAYS WORK ACCORDING TO PLAN…..
Deepika had flown Ron and his squadron to Nal on the 10th of
Jan, 2007.
On the 17th, they talked to each other at length totally oblivious
that it was going to be their last conversation. He had told her
that it was his best birthday ever.
The next day, the Jaguar combat jet he was flying had blown up
mid-air over Jaisalmer district in Rajasthan a few hours ago.
