7. Forked Lightning
Crooked lightning
bolts discharge from
cloud to ground or
cloud to air
Sheet Lightning
Clouds, rain blocks
forked lightning bolt,
but flash illuminates
clouds.
Ball Lightning
On rare occasions,
small glowing balls
loops from the
clouds,
but quickly vanish.

11. LIGHTNING SAFETY RULES
(OUTDOORS)
BE ALERT OF THE SIGNS OF THE
IMPENDING STORM
GET AWAY FROM TREES OR TALL
OBJECTS. STAY AWAY FROM HILLTOPS,
BENCHES AND OPEN FIELDS AND SEEK
SHELTER IN A LOW LYING AREA SUCH AS A
DITCH OR RAVINE.
IF YOU ARE WITH OTHER PEOPLE,
SPREAD OUT.
STAY AWAY FROM WATER OR WET AREAS.
13. Lightning safety experts have
invented a "lightning safety position"
that is very important to know if you
are caught in a thunder storm and you
can't find a shelter. This position looks
hard, but it could save your life. There
are several reasons for doing it.
It makes you a smaller target.
With your heels together, if lightning
hits the ground, it goes through the
closest foot, up to your heel and then
transfers to the other foot and goes
back to the ground again. If you don't
put your feet together, lightning could
go through your heart and kill you.
You put your hands over your ears to
protect them from thunder.
WHAT TO DO IF THERE IS NO SHELTER AND YOU
ARE CAUGHT IN A THUNDERSTORM?
14. LIGHTNING SAFETY
RULES (INDOORS)
STAY AWAY FROM ELECTRICAL
SOCKETS, APPLIANCES,
TELEVISION AND TELEPHONES;
SHUT-OFF THE MAIN POWER
SWITCH.
STAY AWAY FROM WINDOWS,
WATER FAUCETS, PIPES AND
ELECTRICAL OUTLETS.
24. INTERTROPICAL CONVERGENCE
ZONE (ITCZ)
Intertropical Convergence Zone
The Intertropical Convergence Zone, known also as the
doldrums or ITCZ, is the main focal point for showers
and thunderstorms in the tropics.

27. SOUTHWEST MONSOON
Locally known as “HABAGAT”.
Very warm and very humid.
Occurs when warm moist air flows over
the country from the southwest
direction.
Characterized by heavy rainfall that may
lasts for a week.
Affects the country from May to
September.
Associated with the rainy season over
the western part of the country.
30. Tropical Cyclones
It is a low pressure system
Characterized by winds spiralling inward
in a counter-clockwise direction (in
Northern Hemisphere)
Originates from tropical oceans
Wind speed ranges from 45 kph to about
300 kph
Its diameter ranges from 300 to 1,000
kms in diameter
31. CLASSIFICATION OF TROPICAL CYCLONES
TROPICAL DEPRESSION - maximum sustained wind is
less than 61 kph
TROPICAL STORM - maximum sustained wind is from 62
to 117 kph
SEVERE TROPICAL STORM (STS) - maximum wind
speed of 89 to 117 kph or 48 - 63 knots.
TYPHOON – maximum sustained wind is 118-220 kph
Super Typhoon – maximum sustained winds is greater
than 220 kph.
32. THE “EYE” OF A TYPHOON
With very light or calm wind
Clear sky or with few clouds
10-100 kilometers in diameter
Surrounded by massive cloud
formation which is the source of heavy
rains
Winds in the wall of the “eye” is
maximum
Used as reference in tracking

39. A tropical cyclone may threaten or
affect the locality. Winds of 30-60 KPH
may be expected in at least 36 hours.

40.
41. Keep listening to your radio for more information
or updates about the weather disturbance.
Prepare flashlights, batteries, matches, kerosene
lamps or candles and charcoal in anticipation of
power failure - check the capacity of the house to
withstand strong winds and strengthen the house
if necessary.
What to do?
42. A tropical cyclone may threaten the
locality. Winds between 61-120

44. Board up windows - making use of good lumber
which are securely fastened.
Store drinking water in covered containers as
water supply may be cut-off. Children are
advised to stay indoors.
Stay at home!!! Keep posted for updates from

45. A tropical cyclone will affect the locality.
Winds of 121-170 Kph may be expected in
at least 18 hours.
46.
47. Keep your radio on and listen to the latest news
about the tropical cyclone.
Everybody is advised to stay indoors.
If the house is not strong enough to withstand the
battering of strong winds go to designated
evacuation center or seek shelter in stronger
building and stay there until the typhoon has
passed.
What to do?
