Task 2
Idea 1 – Sci-Fi FPS shooter that allows for an open world exploration. RPG
Elements and story centric. Differentalien races, planetary exploration.
Idea 2 – Non-fictional cowboy story that focuses heavily on character
development. Two characters that are friends that find themselves fighting for
survivalin the Wild West.
Idea 3 - The setting could be set in a fictional, post-apocalyptic cyberpunk Earth
whereit has been destroyed by an ongoing war between Angels and Demons.
The player mustquestion herself to saveher family or to savethe rest of
civilisation and stop the ongoing forces of sentient beings.
Idea 3 seems like the more intricate and interesting one to write a game story
for as I can create a foil character that contrasts with the protagonist’s
personality to add to the character’s development.
Storyline
Declan Brophy Games Design Level 3 04/05/2017
Beginning (The Ordinary world/Increased Awareness)
The character tends to her Daily activity within the town centre. She sees
sentient/demonic beings fighting one another and killing humans in the
process. Notknowing whatto do, she can only run away and. Buildings falling
and whilstshe’s running and avoiding the demons/angels but encounters the
Antagonist(s) fighting one another in the sky. You are then concussed from a
blast caused by them and sent flying back.
Middle – (SupernaturalAid/Items of Power)
After waking up fromthe blast/explosion, sheis met by a supernaturalaid. She
is tasked to collect weaponry along the way she is being guided in so then she
has the tools to defeat the threats and/or to save her family.
End – (Ordeal, Death & Rebirth)
The protagonisthas defeated the demons waging war against another by
slaying their “Leaders” and is completely differentcharacter wise; a character
rebirth of sorts.
Story Extract #1
“Buildings were crumbling like cliff sides as the ongoing disaster waserupting
within the urban civilisation, toppling innocentvictims in the rubble’swake as
they were fleeing from the obvious danger above and below. Screamsof terror,
tragedy and turmoilwere only to be heard from the citizens. Nothing more but
the laughsof the fallen angels that could be heard amid tragedy; laughsand
metal were exchanged.”
Story Inspiration
Devil May Cry 1-4 (Dante) – The game revolves around demons and Dante
(Demon Hunter) is tasked with facing unsurmountableodds throughoutthe
games. I want my character to be the opposite and to be quite cowardly
instead of being braveand ballsy. Even the setting I took inspiration from but
instead of it being intact, I wanted it to take place in desolate city scapes and
realms that are weird and grand.
Story Extract #2

“The sanctum overlooked everything like a bird of prey, making the crumbled,
squished up and desecrated buildingsbeneath petty and worthlesslike inferiors

1500 Word Extract – Include the belowsomehow
Genre – Science-fiction.
“There is a prison ship taking criminals across the galaxy when disaster strikes.”
Shopping and exploring the city-space
Janessa walked briskly in the towns central square with the sun setting in the sky with a juicy, orangey hue to it,
which entailed huge modern buildings and small stalls that were selling wears; augmentation care goods.
These were quite common in the forest of buildings as every human being had an augmentation to aid them in
their day to day lives, whether that be limb replacements or IAI (Iris Augment Implementation). IAI were seen
more frequently as it seemed like the norm to own. One skyscraper stood above all else in the towns central
square. “Augus Sciences” it read in a vertical manner. The building was lit up like a chirpy person’s personality;
bright and confident. A Heli-choppers’ propeller blades smacked against the air and soared towards Augus
Science’s landing pad and levitated slowly to find a comfortable spot for it to rest its almost useless legs.
Janessa looked up with curiosity of a new born child at the helicopter to think what or who was on the
helicopter.
Janessa’s IAI had noted of one of the stalls having a sale of IAI care which immediately caught her interest and
her stride stood still immediately. Her body turned smoothly 90 degrees to her left and walked with curiosity to
the stall. Her IAI displayed the stalls sale information on her eyesight like a soldier’s HUD. Stall reviews were
being displayed and scrolled down in a computerized manner, then giving her a sense of security like a weary
pet being hesitant. Janessa finally arrived at the stall that seemed to have worn with age alongside its owner;
wrinkled, worn and weak. Janessa pretended to browse the augmentation care goods waiting for the stall
owner to say something. Eyes scrolling left and right, picking items up and placing down until she heard the
voice saving her from the pretending act that she was performing. “What are you interested in madam?” said
in a warm and friendly manner. Her head shot up like a whack-a-mole fairground machine and responded with
a “I’m not sure on which IAI care I should buy” in which she said in a nervous frequency. The recipient of
Janessa’s response seemed to not match his physique, with the owner looking quite intimidating and non-
approachable. His hands hovered over the IAI section of the stall like some sort of mechanical claw trying to
attempt to pick the best prize it could. The old stall owner was muttering quietly to oneself, presumably to find
the best bargain and brand he had in stock perhaps? The muttering stopped instantaneously and shouted
excitedly “ahaaa! There it is, how could I be so blind? I could do with some “eye”-AI care myself” said in an
ironic and humorous way to Janessa. Her lips perked up from being scarce to chuckling to herself in response of
the old man’s “down to earth” humour and being, which she found comforting. “Here you go mi ’dear, that’ll
be 15C please.” She gracefully gave him the desired credits needed to purchase and exchange for the IAI care.
Janessa responded with a “thank you”, waved and smiled in the process of walking away from the stall. “BE
SURE TO VISIT AGAIN MISS!” could be heard from the distance and her normal walking turned into a backwards
walking motion as she smoothly flicked around momentarily to smile and then transitioned to her normal
Declan Brophy Games Design Level 3 04/05/2017
stride; like newton scales gracefully moving left to right.
Janessa made her way down the compact, exasperating and traffic-like crowds, smells of traditional foods
made her nose tingle with excitement and curiosity like a shark picking up the scent of blood, craving for the
need of food. Though Janessa’s nose was constricted and suffocating by this beautiful aroma of food, she
dismissed it and carried on walking and weaving past the crowds to avoid any contact at all. The sights of
buildings above Janessa made her feel small within the canyon of buildings and apartments, towering above all
and sitting with such tranquillity and upright posture. The never-ending lights on buildings made them look like
huge mosaic canvases with each light corresponding to a piece of the structures abstract, displaying a
satisfying pattern/picture; the apartments and offices were on display in an art gallery. As Janessa continued to
weave her way through the crowd of ongoing and brainless pedestrians, she still felt people chaffing across her
tanned long coat like flint across a stone; swift and hard strikes being traded, waiting for a reaction to emerge.
Janessa’s breathing got heavier and heavier as she panicked and stressed till the point that she could hear that
her breathing became like a bull with her breathing physically being seen flowing from her nostrils. She
clenched her fists tightly. Her eyes rolling in a semi-circle motion with annoyance. She took to the side to move
away from the river of pedestrians and to catch her breath. She breathed in for seven seconds and breathed
out for eleven seconds, quietly speaking out loud and counting and down with each corresponding number.
“1,2, 3..7” ; displaying pseudo heavy breathing but in a more controlled and calming style. Collecting herself
and becoming more controlled of herself, she took to the sinister-like crowds with more confidence than
beforehand; like a warrior braving in the amid of battle. Janessa put her music device that she took from her
pocket on, and played at a high frequency to the point where she felt like she was in her own bubble, her own
world; she would frequently do this as a coping mechanism for when she would be around a crowd of others.
Her eyes seemed to be fixated on an object as she walked through the crowds of people. It was a sign. A sign of
relief and her haven. Her apartment. As she grew closer to the light of safety, something caught her eye that
seemed of the ordinary. She stopped with sudden shock and scarce that her body told her that she couldn’t
move, as if she were experiencing paralysis standing up. “Is… is that prison ship?” she whispered to herself in
such a frightened way. Then disaster strikes and everything takes the most drastic turn of events from here
onwards…
It seemed like the prison ship had been struck by a huge, scary and enormous clawed slash, dinting the ship and
exposing its interior organs to the air. The prison ship was falling like a feather in the distance, swaying side to
side from a distance; falling ever so slowly from where Janessa was stood frightened. “BOOOOM, THUD!” was
all that could be heard when the ship successfully fell to the ground, causing widespread panic and curiosity in
the hearts of the citizens. The ground trembled beneath Janessa making her flail but the explosion seemed to
cover up something more dangerous. Something far more to be afraid of. Janessa ran for her life and broke
from the frightened paralysis state she was in and ran away in the opposite direction to the explosion of the
prison ship. Janessa knew something else were going and as she figured this out, cracks spreading like wildfire,
causing the concrete floor to be pried open causing huge and small fissures. Jumping from one piece of land to
the other, Buildings were crumbling like cliff sides as the ongoing disaster was erupting within the urban
civilisation, toppling innocent victims in the rubble’s wake as they were fleeing from the obvious danger above
and below. Screams of terror, tragedy and turmoil were only to be heard from the citizens. Beings of unknown
origin were spat out of the fissure’s mouth repeatedly. Janessa’s eyes alerted her, catching a glimpse of a herd
of bat-like beings soaring across the sky which motivated her to carry on running. Then an angelic light and
hymn could be heard and seen simultaneously in the sky. Glowing sparkles fell. The sky seemed to have
mimicked what the ground had achieved but within an ever so slightly way. The angelic extra-terrestrials
lingered in the air as they were suspended by the light. The light shrunk and angel-like beings swung down to
attack what had arisen from below. Nothing more but the laughs of the fallen angels that could be heard amid
tragedy; laughsand metal were exchanged in the space of the sky, as they fought one another. Janessa could
not believe what her eyes just witnessed as she looked back briefly whilst she was sprinting and leaping. As her
head swung back round with such confidence, her head collided with a piece of metal piping that had been
forced into angularposition, lining up ever so coincidentally with her. She flopped to the ground as if she had
been hunted by the hunter and remained ever so still, knocking her into an unconscious state.
Several hours had passed by with Janessa being unconscious and suddenly, her eyes were closed and twitching
to open her eyes. Her IAI was malfunctioning and was causing her to a jittery mess when she opened her eyes
successfully. A miracle that she was remained unbeknownst to the creatures or anyone else and she seemed to
be remained intact nor broken. Janessa stood up every so slowly as she assisted herself with being on all fours
Declan Brophy Games Design Level 3 04/05/2017
to stand up and noticed everything had been left and deserted. Cars were toppled and burnt alive, buildings
half eaten and the old stall keeper laying lifeless next to her. “Why me? How could I survived such a tragedy”
she spoke out loud with such conviction. But her eyes noticed a piece of architecture that seemed unhuman and
demonic. She was stumbling, with her hands being cupped by her dirtied left hand and was paying to each and
individual detail her eyes could pick up from. The sanctum overlooked everything like a bird of prey, making the
crumbled, squished up and desecrated buildings beneath petty and worthless like inferiors to the bird of prey.
Towers were clumped on the satanic sanctums’ lower ribs and formed arm-like structures that hung carelessly
from the sanctum. This sanctum structure grew and spread like a virus into the air and sat with the cowardly
clouds above; clouds moved away frantically as if they did not enjoy the sanctums company.
Despite the structures infinite height, hierarchy over the other petty buildings and fearless personality, its
appearance was at an unsurpassed low; making a shamble of itself.

Purpose
I am a writer working for the “Star Citizen" projectthat has been tasked with
using my game writing expertise to an online game developer magazine. I need
to create a story and its dialogue for the projects'latest game.
IntellectualProperty
An IP is a piece of property that is owned by developers. An IP could cover
things such as: Characters, franchise, etc. and if they are used, could lead to
court cases and to sueX person. For example, Mario is a piece of intellectual
character property owned by Nintendo. For them to retain their IP, they would
need to renew the contractfor their piece of property otherwise, the IP would
be not owned and would be open to other to uselegally. A franchiseis very
important for companies.
Target Audience
This chart shows that 79% of players who play Minecraft are males and the
median (Middle) age is 25. This shows us that it appeals to a younger male
audience.

Components
Setting/Theme
The setting could be set in a fictional, post-apocalyptic cyberpunk Earth where
it has been destroyed by an ongoing war between Angels and Demons. The
player mustquestion herself to save her family or to savethe rest of
civilisation and stop the ongoing forces of sentient beings. Civilisationshave
been wiped out and the landscapeshave been left there to crumble. The
setting is on Earth but then transcends into each realm (Hell/Heaven) slowly to
either destroy their leaders. Groups of humans called The Banded have
gathered together fromthe ongoing threats after the crisis.
Character Back Stories
Protagonist
This character had led a normal life doing his day-to-day things but felt weak and
powerless. She lives by herself and knows no one. When both realms or hell and
heaven, she had been affectedby some sort of aura that has given him the
capabilities to combat these sentient beings; she now knows his purpose and had
been stricken by fate. She must then decide what to do with this power; to
defend the planet or to side with one of the sides. Due to her lonely nature, she is
quite cowardly and timid but will still push herself to do more; a recluse of sorts.
She doesn’t really interact or bother about socialising with others around her and
prefers to keep herself to herself hence her recluse like character/personality
traits.
Physical
ď‚· Middle aged
ď‚· Slim/muscular
ď‚· Dark Brown (Secretive, Mysterious)
ď‚· Sharp facial features (eyes, chin)
ď‚· Round nose(Friendly looking)
ď‚· Facial augmentations (Cyberpunk related)
ď‚· American Voice
ď‚· Ability to access to electronics (Augmentations)
Declan Brophy Games Design Level 3 04/05/2017
The player can change their facial augmentations that can have different
effects. The player’s body build may change as they progress throughoutthe
story frombeing slim to being muscular (Nottoo prominent though).
Sociological
ď‚· Has no friends and family live quite far away
ď‚· Stable living and income of money.
ď‚· Freelance
Physiological
ď‚· Timid
ď‚· Hesitant
ď‚· Very understanding character/Notsingular minded
ď‚· Takes everything into consideration
ď‚· Optimist but is scarceabout new/alien things.
ď‚· Introvertdueto having no friends but only family.
My protagonisthasn’texperienced anything unusualor violent.
Representation
ď‚· Female
ď‚· Ethnicity
ď‚· Middle-aged
Character Growth
ď‚· Becomes Confident
ď‚· Stronger than before
She is the opposite of whatshe used to be beforehand and the supernatural
aid fulfils its usage/need by doing so.
Plot Devices
Deus Ex Machina (“From God to machine” - Anything artificialthat resolves the
difficulties plots.
An example of this would be of Kazyua during the time line of Tekken 4. Where
he is broughtback to life frombeing thrown into a volcano by the G
Corporation. The “Devil Gene” is also something to note of as it makes the
bearer immortal.
Declan Brophy Games Design Level 3 04/05/2017
ď‚· I really feel that because my story is based/setwithin a futuristic cyberpunk
setting, I feel that this would fit perfectly within my story without making it
ever so cliché; an object or someone giving X person an artificial aid would
be fantastic to implement somehow.
The positives to using this specific writing give me opportunities to add more
to the storylineand world, such as allowing me spread artificial objects around
the world that aid the protagonist. Or even the mention of the characters IAI
being broken could be fuel for more writing as supernaturalaid could give her
the aid sheneeds and fixes this.
Though there are somenegatives to the contrasting positives. I may need to be
weary of how I am using this technique and conveying within the story, how
they are obtained and used. Planting in random objects that offer this sort of
aid, mustbe given somesortof reasoning and background information as to
why they are needed or how they are used. I shall not be too lax with doing
this.
RedHerring - An irrelevanttopic that diverts the charactersattention from the
actual plot.
A red herring appears within the Mass Effecttrailers where Saren is seen as
being motivated by the hatred he has for humans but instead is brainwashed
by the true Big Bad who is an Omnicidal maniac (Someonewho wants to take
over the world). This is purely by coincidence that this happens of course
hence why it is classified as a Red Herring.
A Red Herring can catch readers/viewers off guard and make them believe that
the Red Herring is the wholepremise of the plot when in fact, is to distract and
lure “X” character away fromfurther progressing onto their main goal; catches
viewers off guard and also the characters which makes it a good device to use.
Some Red Herrings are not as obvious as showing something physically to the
audience instead, can be used within a characters dialogue instead. An
example of this could be a
Mcguffin - Objectsthat are used to help advance the plot.
Declan Brophy Games Design Level 3 04/05/2017
ď‚· Protagonistcould collect items on her journey that could help with the
story progression and also the characters dynamic role. This could include
weapons or even memorabilia that may trigger flashbacks or cut scenes to
show how the characters is feeling or changing subtly.
An example of a Mcguffin used with a game is Tomb Raider: Legends where
Lara needs to collect the legendary sword Excalibur. It’s a McGuffin becauseit
is an object that helps advancethe plot forward and used as the whole
premise of the story.
Adding objects that help advancethe plot are actually really helpful as and can
be used in conjunction with other story writing devices (McGuffin that is also a
Red Herring, Etc). They can easily be utilised without them feeling forced in
and synergisevery well.
A downsideto using this device is that a McGuffin can also be a miniscule and
not as significantor noticeable. Sometimes they can also be hard to distinguish
between an object moving the plot forward or justan irrelevant object; I
presumethat they can be quite easy to mix up.
Foreshadowing - A warning or indication of the future.
ď‚· Sentient, Supernaturalaid could warn of events that may happen
throughoutthe story and would seem to fit the supernaturalaid role quite
well. Player can choose to dismiss the events or take them into account and
do something about it.
A good example of this being used is within Mass Effectas Commander
Shepard speaks to an NPC scientistnamed Manuel wherehe speaks in an
insane manner and insinuates of the Reapers appearing.
Foreshadowing can givethe audience vague hints on what may happen within
the story, sometimes they may not have realised it was a foreshadowing
statement until they have encountered a specific thing. Somesort of an
“element of surprise” to an extent and eventually become conclusive.
Implementing it within a storyline, I personally see as quite hard as for it to be
an effective writing device within your story, notmaking obvious and blatant
statements that may give away the ending to a story for example.
Declan Brophy Games Design Level 3 04/05/2017
Plot Twist - A sudden change in a story that is not expected.
ď‚· I could usethis for the angel like beings and create a big plot twistwhere
they turn againstthe protagonistafter offering their aid to her; they come
across as saviours and “mankind’s lastcontingency plan”.
An example of a plot twist would be within Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back
whereYoda comes across as being annoying but in fact, is a very wiseand
powerfulJedi testing Luke’s patience. Itis a small twist of coursebut is quite
significant; plays the role of a supernaturalaid.
A plot twist could be placed justabouts anywherewithin a story whether that
be at the beginning or towards the end but, they seem to be more effective
towards the end as it impacts the reader/viewer unexpectedly.
A negative of this could be that a specific plot twist may not have the effect
that you wanted the audience to have. Some become quite noticeable and can
usually be seen a mile away if they are poorly implemented (If a character
hints at this or foreshadows itwithin a piece of terrible dialogue/actions.

Narrative Flow
Action/Hack n’ Slash genre – I wantto tell the story by cut scenes and
cinematics that tell us what is clearly going on whether this be about
characters, enemies and story progression. 3rd
person perspectivewillbe used
to give us a clear view of the character. I wantthe over world to tell a story
with different areas having something to tell, depending on how far the
character is through the story.
Character dialogue options in specific situations can be used depending who
you are talking to. Different criteria must be met with specific options being
chosen previously.
Player Choice
Items can be found that may trigger events that are usually not seen so,
collecting items could be a form of player choice in the form of cut
scenes/cinematics. These could include: Weapons, Guns, Sentient Tech
(Weapons left abandoned and are all unique; each mechanic being different).
Some can be miss able but somemay affect the overall story. Helping meet
different criteria for bosses that are essential.
Killing specific and essential enemies could be displayed with dialogue and cut
scenes where they could help you and potentially betray you throughoutso,
being careful who you pick. This can only be done by meeting certain criteria to
trigger these events during a boss fightand if they are not met on the
defeating them, you cannot go back and re-do it. You mustfinish off the game
Declan Brophy Games Design Level 3 04/05/2017
and essentially go around in a circle to re-do this. Some enemies will have
important info on whereyou’refamily are and how to stop the crisis.
The player may get alerts fromthe supernaturalAI aid that also add to the
story potentially leading onto another path however, thesecan be missed
during the play through making it miss able.
Like mentioned beforehand, meeting criteria which may not only be dialogue
but items and fulfilling enemy criteria during the boss fights. Collecting and
performing different actions will affect the overall ending story depending on
what you have chosen.
Industry Practice.
Overall, I feel like some aspects of my work quality was okays and not up to my
usualstandards with some parts feeling rushed butthe 2000 extract I was
tasked with was probably my strongestpart out of this entire document, even
if it did take me the longest to do. I used multiple writing devices within the
long extract which is why I’mproud of that piece of writing. I had no problem
with establishing the genre, setting and themes that this story was made
together and because of that, an extract that I enjoyed writing despite me not
being overly keen on doing. I didn’t realise how much there was to create a
single character and therefore learnt a lot about this particular aspect of
writing.
I think time management was a bit issuewith me as sometimes I can become
lax with my work and complacent which, is something I don’twant to “rub off”
onto any other pieces of work I havemay do in the future.

Unit 74 - Story Writing Work

  • 1. Declan Brophy Games Design Level 3 04/05/2017 Task 2 Idea 1 – Sci-Fi FPS shooter that allows for an open world exploration. RPG Elements and story centric. Differentalien races, planetary exploration. Idea 2 – Non-fictional cowboy story that focuses heavily on character development. Two characters that are friends that find themselves fighting for survivalin the Wild West. Idea 3 - The setting could be set in a fictional, post-apocalyptic cyberpunk Earth whereit has been destroyed by an ongoing war between Angels and Demons. The player mustquestion herself to saveher family or to savethe rest of civilisation and stop the ongoing forces of sentient beings. Idea 3 seems like the more intricate and interesting one to write a game story for as I can create a foil character that contrasts with the protagonist’s personality to add to the character’s development. Storyline
  • 2. Declan Brophy Games Design Level 3 04/05/2017 Beginning (The Ordinary world/Increased Awareness) The character tends to her Daily activity within the town centre. She sees sentient/demonic beings fighting one another and killing humans in the process. Notknowing whatto do, she can only run away and. Buildings falling and whilstshe’s running and avoiding the demons/angels but encounters the Antagonist(s) fighting one another in the sky. You are then concussed from a blast caused by them and sent flying back. Middle – (SupernaturalAid/Items of Power) After waking up fromthe blast/explosion, sheis met by a supernaturalaid. She is tasked to collect weaponry along the way she is being guided in so then she has the tools to defeat the threats and/or to save her family. End – (Ordeal, Death & Rebirth) The protagonisthas defeated the demons waging war against another by slaying their “Leaders” and is completely differentcharacter wise; a character rebirth of sorts. Story Extract #1 “Buildings were crumbling like cliff sides as the ongoing disaster waserupting within the urban civilisation, toppling innocentvictims in the rubble’swake as they were fleeing from the obvious danger above and below. Screamsof terror, tragedy and turmoilwere only to be heard from the citizens. Nothing more but the laughsof the fallen angels that could be heard amid tragedy; laughsand metal were exchanged.” Story Inspiration Devil May Cry 1-4 (Dante) – The game revolves around demons and Dante (Demon Hunter) is tasked with facing unsurmountableodds throughoutthe games. I want my character to be the opposite and to be quite cowardly instead of being braveand ballsy. Even the setting I took inspiration from but instead of it being intact, I wanted it to take place in desolate city scapes and realms that are weird and grand. Story Extract #2
  • 3. Declan Brophy Games Design Level 3 04/05/2017 “The sanctum overlooked everything like a bird of prey, making the crumbled, squished up and desecrated buildingsbeneath petty and worthlesslike inferiors to the bird of prey. Towerswere clumped on the satanic sanctums’ lower ribs and formed arm-like structuresthathung carelessly from the sanctum. This sanctum structure grew and spread like a virus into the air and sat with the cowardly cloudsabove; cloudsmoved away frantically asif they did not enjoy the sanctumscompany. Despite the structuresinfinite height, hierarchy over the other petty buildings and fearless personality, its appearance wasatan unsurpassed low; making a shamble of itself.” 1500 Word Extract – Include the belowsomehow Genre – Science-fiction. “There is a prison ship taking criminals across the galaxy when disaster strikes.” Shopping and exploring the city-space Janessa walked briskly in the towns central square with the sun setting in the sky with a juicy, orangey hue to it, which entailed huge modern buildings and small stalls that were selling wears; augmentation care goods. These were quite common in the forest of buildings as every human being had an augmentation to aid them in their day to day lives, whether that be limb replacements or IAI (Iris Augment Implementation). IAI were seen more frequently as it seemed like the norm to own. One skyscraper stood above all else in the towns central square. “Augus Sciences” it read in a vertical manner. The building was lit up like a chirpy person’s personality; bright and confident. A Heli-choppers’ propeller blades smacked against the air and soared towards Augus Science’s landing pad and levitated slowly to find a comfortable spot for it to rest its almost useless legs. Janessa looked up with curiosity of a new born child at the helicopter to think what or who was on the helicopter. Janessa’s IAI had noted of one of the stalls having a sale of IAI care which immediately caught her interest and her stride stood still immediately. Her body turned smoothly 90 degrees to her left and walked with curiosity to the stall. Her IAI displayed the stalls sale information on her eyesight like a soldier’s HUD. Stall reviews were being displayed and scrolled down in a computerized manner, then giving her a sense of security like a weary pet being hesitant. Janessa finally arrived at the stall that seemed to have worn with age alongside its owner; wrinkled, worn and weak. Janessa pretended to browse the augmentation care goods waiting for the stall owner to say something. Eyes scrolling left and right, picking items up and placing down until she heard the voice saving her from the pretending act that she was performing. “What are you interested in madam?” said in a warm and friendly manner. Her head shot up like a whack-a-mole fairground machine and responded with a “I’m not sure on which IAI care I should buy” in which she said in a nervous frequency. The recipient of Janessa’s response seemed to not match his physique, with the owner looking quite intimidating and non- approachable. His hands hovered over the IAI section of the stall like some sort of mechanical claw trying to attempt to pick the best prize it could. The old stall owner was muttering quietly to oneself, presumably to find the best bargain and brand he had in stock perhaps? The muttering stopped instantaneously and shouted excitedly “ahaaa! There it is, how could I be so blind? I could do with some “eye”-AI care myself” said in an ironic and humorous way to Janessa. Her lips perked up from being scarce to chuckling to herself in response of the old man’s “down to earth” humour and being, which she found comforting. “Here you go mi ’dear, that’ll be 15C please.” She gracefully gave him the desired credits needed to purchase and exchange for the IAI care. Janessa responded with a “thank you”, waved and smiled in the process of walking away from the stall. “BE SURE TO VISIT AGAIN MISS!” could be heard from the distance and her normal walking turned into a backwards walking motion as she smoothly flicked around momentarily to smile and then transitioned to her normal
  • 4. Declan Brophy Games Design Level 3 04/05/2017 stride; like newton scales gracefully moving left to right. Janessa made her way down the compact, exasperating and traffic-like crowds, smells of traditional foods made her nose tingle with excitement and curiosity like a shark picking up the scent of blood, craving for the need of food. Though Janessa’s nose was constricted and suffocating by this beautiful aroma of food, she dismissed it and carried on walking and weaving past the crowds to avoid any contact at all. The sights of buildings above Janessa made her feel small within the canyon of buildings and apartments, towering above all and sitting with such tranquillity and upright posture. The never-ending lights on buildings made them look like huge mosaic canvases with each light corresponding to a piece of the structures abstract, displaying a satisfying pattern/picture; the apartments and offices were on display in an art gallery. As Janessa continued to weave her way through the crowd of ongoing and brainless pedestrians, she still felt people chaffing across her tanned long coat like flint across a stone; swift and hard strikes being traded, waiting for a reaction to emerge. Janessa’s breathing got heavier and heavier as she panicked and stressed till the point that she could hear that her breathing became like a bull with her breathing physically being seen flowing from her nostrils. She clenched her fists tightly. Her eyes rolling in a semi-circle motion with annoyance. She took to the side to move away from the river of pedestrians and to catch her breath. She breathed in for seven seconds and breathed out for eleven seconds, quietly speaking out loud and counting and down with each corresponding number. “1,2, 3..7” ; displaying pseudo heavy breathing but in a more controlled and calming style. Collecting herself and becoming more controlled of herself, she took to the sinister-like crowds with more confidence than beforehand; like a warrior braving in the amid of battle. Janessa put her music device that she took from her pocket on, and played at a high frequency to the point where she felt like she was in her own bubble, her own world; she would frequently do this as a coping mechanism for when she would be around a crowd of others. Her eyes seemed to be fixated on an object as she walked through the crowds of people. It was a sign. A sign of relief and her haven. Her apartment. As she grew closer to the light of safety, something caught her eye that seemed of the ordinary. She stopped with sudden shock and scarce that her body told her that she couldn’t move, as if she were experiencing paralysis standing up. “Is… is that prison ship?” she whispered to herself in such a frightened way. Then disaster strikes and everything takes the most drastic turn of events from here onwards… It seemed like the prison ship had been struck by a huge, scary and enormous clawed slash, dinting the ship and exposing its interior organs to the air. The prison ship was falling like a feather in the distance, swaying side to side from a distance; falling ever so slowly from where Janessa was stood frightened. “BOOOOM, THUD!” was all that could be heard when the ship successfully fell to the ground, causing widespread panic and curiosity in the hearts of the citizens. The ground trembled beneath Janessa making her flail but the explosion seemed to cover up something more dangerous. Something far more to be afraid of. Janessa ran for her life and broke from the frightened paralysis state she was in and ran away in the opposite direction to the explosion of the prison ship. Janessa knew something else were going and as she figured this out, cracks spreading like wildfire, causing the concrete floor to be pried open causing huge and small fissures. Jumping from one piece of land to the other, Buildings were crumbling like cliff sides as the ongoing disaster was erupting within the urban civilisation, toppling innocent victims in the rubble’s wake as they were fleeing from the obvious danger above and below. Screams of terror, tragedy and turmoil were only to be heard from the citizens. Beings of unknown origin were spat out of the fissure’s mouth repeatedly. Janessa’s eyes alerted her, catching a glimpse of a herd of bat-like beings soaring across the sky which motivated her to carry on running. Then an angelic light and hymn could be heard and seen simultaneously in the sky. Glowing sparkles fell. The sky seemed to have mimicked what the ground had achieved but within an ever so slightly way. The angelic extra-terrestrials lingered in the air as they were suspended by the light. The light shrunk and angel-like beings swung down to attack what had arisen from below. Nothing more but the laughs of the fallen angels that could be heard amid tragedy; laughsand metal were exchanged in the space of the sky, as they fought one another. Janessa could not believe what her eyes just witnessed as she looked back briefly whilst she was sprinting and leaping. As her head swung back round with such confidence, her head collided with a piece of metal piping that had been forced into angularposition, lining up ever so coincidentally with her. She flopped to the ground as if she had been hunted by the hunter and remained ever so still, knocking her into an unconscious state. Several hours had passed by with Janessa being unconscious and suddenly, her eyes were closed and twitching to open her eyes. Her IAI was malfunctioning and was causing her to a jittery mess when she opened her eyes successfully. A miracle that she was remained unbeknownst to the creatures or anyone else and she seemed to be remained intact nor broken. Janessa stood up every so slowly as she assisted herself with being on all fours
  • 5. Declan Brophy Games Design Level 3 04/05/2017 to stand up and noticed everything had been left and deserted. Cars were toppled and burnt alive, buildings half eaten and the old stall keeper laying lifeless next to her. “Why me? How could I survived such a tragedy” she spoke out loud with such conviction. But her eyes noticed a piece of architecture that seemed unhuman and demonic. She was stumbling, with her hands being cupped by her dirtied left hand and was paying to each and individual detail her eyes could pick up from. The sanctum overlooked everything like a bird of prey, making the crumbled, squished up and desecrated buildings beneath petty and worthless like inferiors to the bird of prey. Towers were clumped on the satanic sanctums’ lower ribs and formed arm-like structures that hung carelessly from the sanctum. This sanctum structure grew and spread like a virus into the air and sat with the cowardly clouds above; clouds moved away frantically as if they did not enjoy the sanctums company. Despite the structures infinite height, hierarchy over the other petty buildings and fearless personality, its appearance was at an unsurpassed low; making a shamble of itself.
  • 6. Declan Brophy Games Design Level 3 04/05/2017 Purpose I am a writer working for the “Star Citizen" projectthat has been tasked with using my game writing expertise to an online game developer magazine. I need to create a story and its dialogue for the projects'latest game. IntellectualProperty An IP is a piece of property that is owned by developers. An IP could cover things such as: Characters, franchise, etc. and if they are used, could lead to court cases and to sueX person. For example, Mario is a piece of intellectual character property owned by Nintendo. For them to retain their IP, they would need to renew the contractfor their piece of property otherwise, the IP would be not owned and would be open to other to uselegally. A franchiseis very important for companies. Target Audience This chart shows that 79% of players who play Minecraft are males and the median (Middle) age is 25. This shows us that it appeals to a younger male audience.
  • 7. Declan Brophy Games Design Level 3 04/05/2017 Components Setting/Theme The setting could be set in a fictional, post-apocalyptic cyberpunk Earth where it has been destroyed by an ongoing war between Angels and Demons. The player mustquestion herself to save her family or to savethe rest of civilisation and stop the ongoing forces of sentient beings. Civilisationshave been wiped out and the landscapeshave been left there to crumble. The setting is on Earth but then transcends into each realm (Hell/Heaven) slowly to either destroy their leaders. Groups of humans called The Banded have gathered together fromthe ongoing threats after the crisis. Character Back Stories Protagonist This character had led a normal life doing his day-to-day things but felt weak and powerless. She lives by herself and knows no one. When both realms or hell and heaven, she had been affectedby some sort of aura that has given him the capabilities to combat these sentient beings; she now knows his purpose and had been stricken by fate. She must then decide what to do with this power; to defend the planet or to side with one of the sides. Due to her lonely nature, she is quite cowardly and timid but will still push herself to do more; a recluse of sorts. She doesn’t really interact or bother about socialising with others around her and prefers to keep herself to herself hence her recluse like character/personality traits. Physical ď‚· Middle aged ď‚· Slim/muscular ď‚· Dark Brown (Secretive, Mysterious) ď‚· Sharp facial features (eyes, chin) ď‚· Round nose(Friendly looking) ď‚· Facial augmentations (Cyberpunk related) ď‚· American Voice ď‚· Ability to access to electronics (Augmentations)
  • 8. Declan Brophy Games Design Level 3 04/05/2017 The player can change their facial augmentations that can have different effects. The player’s body build may change as they progress throughoutthe story frombeing slim to being muscular (Nottoo prominent though). Sociological ď‚· Has no friends and family live quite far away ď‚· Stable living and income of money. ď‚· Freelance Physiological ď‚· Timid ď‚· Hesitant ď‚· Very understanding character/Notsingular minded ď‚· Takes everything into consideration ď‚· Optimist but is scarceabout new/alien things. ď‚· Introvertdueto having no friends but only family. My protagonisthasn’texperienced anything unusualor violent. Representation ď‚· Female ď‚· Ethnicity ď‚· Middle-aged Character Growth ď‚· Becomes Confident ď‚· Stronger than before She is the opposite of whatshe used to be beforehand and the supernatural aid fulfils its usage/need by doing so. Plot Devices Deus Ex Machina (“From God to machine” - Anything artificialthat resolves the difficulties plots. An example of this would be of Kazyua during the time line of Tekken 4. Where he is broughtback to life frombeing thrown into a volcano by the G Corporation. The “Devil Gene” is also something to note of as it makes the bearer immortal.
  • 9. Declan Brophy Games Design Level 3 04/05/2017 ď‚· I really feel that because my story is based/setwithin a futuristic cyberpunk setting, I feel that this would fit perfectly within my story without making it ever so clichĂ©; an object or someone giving X person an artificial aid would be fantastic to implement somehow. The positives to using this specific writing give me opportunities to add more to the storylineand world, such as allowing me spread artificial objects around the world that aid the protagonist. Or even the mention of the characters IAI being broken could be fuel for more writing as supernaturalaid could give her the aid sheneeds and fixes this. Though there are somenegatives to the contrasting positives. I may need to be weary of how I am using this technique and conveying within the story, how they are obtained and used. Planting in random objects that offer this sort of aid, mustbe given somesortof reasoning and background information as to why they are needed or how they are used. I shall not be too lax with doing this. RedHerring - An irrelevanttopic that diverts the charactersattention from the actual plot. A red herring appears within the Mass Effecttrailers where Saren is seen as being motivated by the hatred he has for humans but instead is brainwashed by the true Big Bad who is an Omnicidal maniac (Someonewho wants to take over the world). This is purely by coincidence that this happens of course hence why it is classified as a Red Herring. A Red Herring can catch readers/viewers off guard and make them believe that the Red Herring is the wholepremise of the plot when in fact, is to distract and lure “X” character away fromfurther progressing onto their main goal; catches viewers off guard and also the characters which makes it a good device to use. Some Red Herrings are not as obvious as showing something physically to the audience instead, can be used within a characters dialogue instead. An example of this could be a Mcguffin - Objectsthat are used to help advance the plot.
  • 10. Declan Brophy Games Design Level 3 04/05/2017 ď‚· Protagonistcould collect items on her journey that could help with the story progression and also the characters dynamic role. This could include weapons or even memorabilia that may trigger flashbacks or cut scenes to show how the characters is feeling or changing subtly. An example of a Mcguffin used with a game is Tomb Raider: Legends where Lara needs to collect the legendary sword Excalibur. It’s a McGuffin becauseit is an object that helps advancethe plot forward and used as the whole premise of the story. Adding objects that help advancethe plot are actually really helpful as and can be used in conjunction with other story writing devices (McGuffin that is also a Red Herring, Etc). They can easily be utilised without them feeling forced in and synergisevery well. A downsideto using this device is that a McGuffin can also be a miniscule and not as significantor noticeable. Sometimes they can also be hard to distinguish between an object moving the plot forward or justan irrelevant object; I presumethat they can be quite easy to mix up. Foreshadowing - A warning or indication of the future. ď‚· Sentient, Supernaturalaid could warn of events that may happen throughoutthe story and would seem to fit the supernaturalaid role quite well. Player can choose to dismiss the events or take them into account and do something about it. A good example of this being used is within Mass Effectas Commander Shepard speaks to an NPC scientistnamed Manuel wherehe speaks in an insane manner and insinuates of the Reapers appearing. Foreshadowing can givethe audience vague hints on what may happen within the story, sometimes they may not have realised it was a foreshadowing statement until they have encountered a specific thing. Somesort of an “element of surprise” to an extent and eventually become conclusive. Implementing it within a storyline, I personally see as quite hard as for it to be an effective writing device within your story, notmaking obvious and blatant statements that may give away the ending to a story for example.
  • 11. Declan Brophy Games Design Level 3 04/05/2017 Plot Twist - A sudden change in a story that is not expected. ď‚· I could usethis for the angel like beings and create a big plot twistwhere they turn againstthe protagonistafter offering their aid to her; they come across as saviours and “mankind’s lastcontingency plan”. An example of a plot twist would be within Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back whereYoda comes across as being annoying but in fact, is a very wiseand powerfulJedi testing Luke’s patience. Itis a small twist of coursebut is quite significant; plays the role of a supernaturalaid. A plot twist could be placed justabouts anywherewithin a story whether that be at the beginning or towards the end but, they seem to be more effective towards the end as it impacts the reader/viewer unexpectedly. A negative of this could be that a specific plot twist may not have the effect that you wanted the audience to have. Some become quite noticeable and can usually be seen a mile away if they are poorly implemented (If a character hints at this or foreshadows itwithin a piece of terrible dialogue/actions. Character Devices Antagonists Dynamic (Someone who changes over time) Main character Foiled supernaturalaid (A characters’ traits/personality contrast heavily in thischaracter. An opposite) ď‚· Confident ď‚· Strong ď‚· Fearless ď‚· Sentient (Power that was given to you during the crisis) ď‚· Embedded internally (Can heard from inside. Seen through your eyes) ď‚· Angelic ď‚· Artificial Intelligence
  • 12. Declan Brophy Games Design Level 3 04/05/2017 Protagonist(s) Static (Someone who doesn’t change) NPCs Settlers Demonic/Angelic soldiers God (Placeholder Name) Lucifer (Placeholder Name) Narrative Flow Action/Hack n’ Slash genre – I wantto tell the story by cut scenes and cinematics that tell us what is clearly going on whether this be about characters, enemies and story progression. 3rd person perspectivewillbe used to give us a clear view of the character. I wantthe over world to tell a story with different areas having something to tell, depending on how far the character is through the story. Character dialogue options in specific situations can be used depending who you are talking to. Different criteria must be met with specific options being chosen previously. Player Choice Items can be found that may trigger events that are usually not seen so, collecting items could be a form of player choice in the form of cut scenes/cinematics. These could include: Weapons, Guns, Sentient Tech (Weapons left abandoned and are all unique; each mechanic being different). Some can be miss able but somemay affect the overall story. Helping meet different criteria for bosses that are essential. Killing specific and essential enemies could be displayed with dialogue and cut scenes where they could help you and potentially betray you throughoutso, being careful who you pick. This can only be done by meeting certain criteria to trigger these events during a boss fightand if they are not met on the defeating them, you cannot go back and re-do it. You mustfinish off the game

The player may get alerts fromthe supernaturalAI aid that also add to the story potentially leading onto another path however, thesecan be missed during the play through making it miss able. Like mentioned beforehand, meeting criteria which may not only be dialogue but items and fulfilling enemy criteria during the boss fights. Collecting and performing different actions will affect the overall ending story depending on what you have chosen. Industry Practice. Overall, I feel like some aspects of my work quality was okays and not up to my usualstandards with some parts feeling rushed butthe 2000 extract I was tasked with was probably my strongestpart out of this entire document, even if it did take me the longest to do. I used multiple writing devices within the long extract which is why I’mproud of that piece of writing. I had no problem with establishing the genre, setting and themes that this story was made together and because of that, an extract that I enjoyed writing despite me not being overly keen on doing. I didn’t realise how much there was to create a single character and therefore learnt a lot about this particular aspect of writing. I think time management was a bit issuewith me as sometimes I can become lax with my work and complacent which, is something I don’twant to “rub off” onto any other pieces of work I havemay do in the future.
