5. Reflection is the bouncing off
of light rays when it hits a
surface like a plane mirror.
6. Activity: Angle of Incidence vs Angle of Reflection
Important Terms!
Incident Ray - ray of light approaching the mirror represented by
an arrow approaching an optical element like mirrors
Reflected Ray - ray of light which leaves the mirror and is
represented by and arrow pointing away from the mirror.
Normal Line - an imaginary line that can be drawn perpendicular to
the surface of the mirror at the point of incidence where the ray
strikes the mirror.
7. Angle of Incidence – the angle between the incident ray and the normal line
Angle of Reflection – the angle between the reflected ray and the normal line
12. IMAGES FORMED BY PLANE MIRRORS
Reflection
- bouncing of light rays when it hits a surface like mirror
CHARACTERISTICS IS DESCRIBED IN TERMS OF:
IMAGE
ORIENTATION
LOCATION
SIZE
13. IMAGE
Virtual image - formed when an outgoing ray from an
object always diverge (move apart)
ORIENTATION
Erect, laterally inverted
Lateral inversion- phenomenon wherein what is left on
the object appears as right on the image and vice
versa. This is due to the direction that light follows
when it strikes a reflecting surface like mirror.
15. Types of Reflection
Specular/ Regular Reflection
-the reflection of light on smooth surfaces such as mirrors or
calm body of waters
Diffuse/Irregular Reflection
-the reflection of light on rough surfaces such as clothing, paper
and asphalt roadway
