thatthegovernmentis actuallymaking greatstrides toward embracing
oneof thegreatesttechnological innovations taking thebusiness world

It’s no secretthatprivatesectororganizations across an arrayof

byadopting cloud-based solutions. Oneof themostattractivebenefits
to governmentagencies, who havebeen underincreasinglyharsh
financial constraints, is thecostsavings offered bycloud technologies.
According to asoftwareclientarchitectforgovernmentagencies,
SujathaPerepa, “Agencies arepressed to seekoptimized business
models whilemeasuring theirperformanceand servicedeliveries more
closely—hencetheirinclination towards shared services.”
Gartneralso identified costsavings as an importantmotivating factor
forthegovernment’s increased adoption of cloud technologies. They
reportthatoverthenextfew years, “Governments will increasinglyfavor
cloud computing overlong-running in-houseIT deployments to contain
costs and increasepredictability.” Based on its analysis, Gartner
predicts that“public cloud offerings will grow to accountformorethan
25 percentof governmentbusiness services in domains otherthan
national defenseand security.”
However, governmentorganizations aren’tsolelyrelying on public
clouds, which aremodels thatprovideservices in avirtualized
environmentthatareaccessibleoverapublic network, and usethesame
shared infrastructureand physical resources. Certain sectors, such as
defenseand security, areconsidered to be“mission critical” and
thereforemustbeseen to bemorereliableand secure. Forthis reason,
according to IDC, byFY 2014thefederal governmentwill spend $1.7
billion on privateclouds, versus just$118.3 million on public clouds.
Privatecloud deployments appeal in this instancebecausetheyarebuilt
byapplying virtualization within an organization’s own datacenter. Since
onlythespecified clientcan operatewithin this environment,
organizations haveatendencyto regard themas amoresecureand

critical domain. Of course, therewill also beanumberof hybrid cloud
solutions thatutilizeacombination of public and privatemodels,
depending upon theneeds of theagency.

Perhaps, recognizing thatthepaceof changecan beslow in its sector,
theUSgovernmentpublished theUSFederal Cloud Computing Strategy,
wherein itoutlined its plans to institutetheCloudFirstpolicyto
acceleratethepaceof cloud adoption. Thegovernmentis notjust
seeking to cutcosts and increaseoperational efficiency. With increasing
talkof privatization, governmentagencies arealso aiming to redefine
theirbusiness strategies byoffering improved citizen services, a
phenomenon thatis also outlined in thestrategydocument. Theymust
also keep complianceand securitymeasures in mind, following a
numberof recentlyinstituted federal mandates, so thatnational security
is underno threatof being compromised.
In thewords of VivekKundra, theUSChief Information Officer, “Cheaper
processors, fasternetworks, and theriseof mobiledevices aredriving
innovation fasterthan everbefore. Cloud computing is amanifestation
and coreenablerof this transformation. Justas theInternethas led to
thecreation of new business models [thatwere]unfathomable20 years
ago, cloud computing will disruptand reshapeentireindustries in
unforeseen ways.” Cloud technologyis driving innovation in every
industry. So, buckleyourseatbelt, hang on tight, and enjoytheride,
UncleSam.
