Food Price Index
This index measures the monthly change in
international prices of a basket of food commodities.
It averaged 176.2 points in May 2018, up 2.2 points
(1.2%) from April and hitting its highest level since
October 2017. This increase reflected a continued
steep rise in dairy price quotations. Those of cereals
also rose at a slower pace.

Food loss analysis: causes and solutions
The following publications are part of a FAO/CARICOM joint project on the “Reduction of post-harvest losses along the food chain in the
CARICOM subregion”, particularly in Guyana, Trinidad and Tobago and Saint Lucia. They evaluate post-harvest losses for three different
commodities (mangoes, tomatoes and cassava), include an in-depth analysis of post-harvest handling practices, and give an overview of
critical loss points. Recommendations to reduce losses in each of the value chains include harvesting at the appropriate stage of maturity,
adopting proper field sanitation practices, and using adequate packaging.
