©Change in Perspective Limited 2020
As we have travelled, I have been intrigued to “meet” leaders from
the past and reflect on their achievements and I would like to
introduce you to some of them here and talk about some of the
business lessons that they offer.

#challengingthinking
Tokugawa Ieyasu was one of the most significant figures in
Japanese history.
In a country that was beset with civil war, he built his own
powerbase in the East of Japan and, in 1600, defeated the
Western army at the battle of Sekigahara achieving
supremacy over the whole of Japan.
1n 1603, the Emperor gave him the title of Shogun of Japan.
TheTokugawa shogunate led Japan for more than 250 years
until power was returned to the Emperor in 1868.
- 4. The Grand Duke of Lithuania - Gediminas
©Change in Perspective Limited 2020
In the 14th Century, Gediminas transformed Lithuania
into an empire which spanned from the Baltic Sea to
the Black Sea.
He began with a clear set of objectives;
• To expand its territory to the South East
• To neutralise theTeutonic Order
• To stop Muscovy from growing into a powerful
enemy
• To stop Poland from further enlargement
• To develop political, agricultural, mercantile and
cultural ties with the West.
When I read these objectives in a museum in the city
ofVilnius (which he founded) I wanted to meet him
and ask him about his management structure,
delegation of accountabilities, KPIs, communications
and all of the other related questions which I have
asked so many times in businesses over the years.
