“FreeFlow Core is best at directing the flow of the work
itself so our production staff don’t have to stand there,
and can go back to doing other work. We’re learning
new things about it all the time. It’s an ongoing process
that will help us find new efficiencies in our production
of education publications.”

CMYK at the forefront
of web-to-print services
Ten years ago, David Kegen,
now Company Director at CMYK
Colour Online, had an idea for an
online printing service. Targeted
to individuals and small businesses
looking to outsource their printing
requirements, the concept of a
web-to-print solution was born at
a time when, as he explains, “Nobody
was using the online space for printing.”
While David’s big idea seemed
out-of-the-box in 2003, his decision
to go against the stream has today
resulted in a hugely successful
consumer and trade printing business.
With their head office based in
Melbourne, and serving a broad
cross-section of clients Australia
wide, from small businesses to
multinational and government
departments, CMYK Colour Online
offers high quality, cost-effective
printing using the latest Fuji Xerox
digital colour printing technology.
As David explains, “Our customers
come to us because they’re often
unhappy with their current printer.
They find us online, and from there,
the relationship begins. Very quickly
they’re hooked on our price point and
the high level of service and quality
we deliver. Not surprisingly our
retention of customers is very high.”
“Fuji Xerox Australia is
interested in our business.
They want to come and
meet with us, they want
to know what can be done
and done better. They’re
interested in where we’re
going and are always looking
at new opportunities for
improvement.”

Investing in
tomorrow, today
At a time when much of the
commercial printing industry is
consolidating inventory, David
made the decision to invest further
in the company’s technology to
ensure CMYK could meet tomorrow’s
production opportunities.
“As a service provider with a
responsibility to consumer and trade
clients to deliver quality printing
on time, on budget, in a myriad of
formats, it’s paramount that CMYK
has access to solutions that are
versatile and capable of handling
growing volumes and shrinking
deadlines,” David explained.
The Business Challenge
Unsatisfied with devices whose
quality and speed had diminished
over-time, David made the decision
to overhaul CMYK’s printing fleet.
“One of the things that differentiates Fuji Xerox
Australia most is that their team listens. If we
encounter an issue, it’s not just brushed to the side.
Follow-up is faster than we’ve ever experienced, and
there is a sense of proactivity we haven’t seen before
in a printing supplier. “

2. He explained, “With our previous
inventory, we were facing persistent
issues with device uptime and
maintenance. The incumbent
machinery had been stretched
past its recommended number
of impressions and was simply
starting to fail.”
The pressure to closely monitor
aging devices and their output
was also proving a challenge,
shifting David’s focus from more
mission — critical business processes.
“As our clients rely on us, we also
rely on our devices to deliver time
and again, the highest quality
possible — and this is something
we aren’t willing to compromise.”
Driving CMYK forward
After conversations with other
commercial printers using Xerox iGen
devices, David was convinced that
Fuji Xerox Australia was the right fit.
“When I met with Fuji Xerox Australia
I was looking at ways to drive the
business forward, reduce costs
and improve the reliability of our
inventory.
So we did our due diligence
— we really wanted to ensure
that the printers could do what
we needed them to do. We went
out to sites that had the technology
and spoke to operators. We spoke
to them about reliability, down time,
volumes and cost — all of which
factored in to our final decision.”
“As the market leader,
I was, and am still confident
in Fuji Xerox Australia to
provide the ‘latest and
greatest’ devices to CMYK.”

The Solution
Taking into account CMYK’s goals
around cost containment, speed and
paper-handling, Fuji Xerox Australia
proposed a new printing fleet of
four devices, together with a strong
network of technicians to support
the machines if and when required.
“In the end we chose Fuji Xerox
Australia because we were aware
of the significant difference in up
time and the opportunities this
could open up to our business,”
David said.
Following a brief implementation
period, CMYK introduced four Fuji
Xerox devices into the business.
To ensure optimised colour output
and print quality, David also created
a custom, climate controlled room
to house the devices.
Benefit: Increase in
uptime and technical
support
Describing the importance of
uptime to the business, David uses
the analogy of a ‘hopper of jobs.’
“I liken our processes at CMYK
to a hopper system. We have
a consistent flow of work coming
through the presses, so there’s
never a time when there’s
nothing to print. The hopper
is never empty.”

3. He continued, “High output and
high reliability are vital to meeting
our targets. What’s happening
in the marketplace is runs are
getting shorter, but more frequent.
Customers want their printing at a
competitive price and they want it
faster. Fuji Xerox Australia helps us
move in both of those directions.”
David also counts on Fuji Xerox
Australia to attend to technical
queries and concerns, describing
the support team as, “Invaluable.
Follow-up is far superior to what
we’ve experienced before.”
Benefit: Versatility
of paper handling
Due to the diversity of printing
jobs that pass through CMYK, from
short runs of business cards to large
quantities of magazines and flyers
— versatility in their chosen devices
is critical.
In David’s own words — “We needed
devices that could handle duplex,
heavy weight stock, and large
sheet printing requests seamlessly.
The device’s paper handling
capabilities was highly important
in terms of growing our service
offering. I’m pleased to say we
now have devices that can handle
all printing formats.”
Benefit: Sustainability
With sustainability also a focus
for David and the CMYK team, the
company is stringent in its recycling
processes of all waste paper,
cardboard and other consumables.
CMYK also offers a range of
recycled papers to its customers
to minimise its carbon footprint.
The future for CMYK
The introduction of a Fuji Xerox
device fleet has also opened new
doors for CMYK — expanding their
service offering.
David explains — “We’re now looking
at a photobook offering which we
see as one of the biggest growth
areas for our business. This includes
short run booklets and magazines,
all of which is within our sphere
of capability with Fuji Xerox’s
iGen devices.”
“Today, I’m proud to say
CMYK is a strong business
that delivers quality products
to customers. The solutions
from Fuji Xerox Australia
have enabled that.”
