- Why this topic? Because IT matters™ :-) The institutions of government serve a great social purpose to the citizens, by providing stability, social services, and the overarching sense of security that most of us take comfort in. With the rapid advancements in internet and information technology over the past two decades, many of us now take for granted the fact that we can order anything from books to home hardware products in one-click and have it delivered same day. We can now send money globally, trade financial instruments or book an AirBnB from our smartphone in minutes.
- And we can do all of this while waiting in a line for 3 hours to renew our health card, or get a permit for painting a fence…
- As our society's expectations of “normal” customer service continues to improve, government must also modernize along with the private sector. If we don’t meet or exceed the new bar of the digital age, then the citizenry begin to lose faith in their government’s ability to deliver. The people lose faith in the institutions that provide them comfort. Scary.

- This much change can seem daunting to many public sector organizations, but there are a couple of tricks to help build that bridge.
- Launched in 2018 to coincide with the federal government’s legalization of Marijuana, the Government of Ontario awarded an RFP to a cloud-based solution for their online store. Shopify hosts the OCS on Google Cloud, and is responsible for Ontario’s timely launch. Interestingly there was a security breach of customer data recently that had people jumping up and down - but it was not the cloud solution that was breached: Canada Post, hosted in a “secure” crown corporation’s datacenter in Ottawa, was hacked, leading to the release of 4,500 delivery details. https://globalnews.ca/news/4639742/ocs-canada-post-hacked/
