This document provides a creative brief for an ePub redesign of Shigeru Miyamoto's Legend of Zelda. The target audience is those looking for a basic introduction to the Zelda series. Key elements included are plots from two Zelda games, chapter art representing different eras, and two iconic Zelda songs. Testing on an iPhone 5 showed good formatting, readable text size, and functional enhancements. The conclusion discusses wanting more testing on an iPad and expanding the project to include additional Zelda games and details.
2. Creative Brief
I absolutely loved putting together this Legend of
Zelda iBook. Other than the fact that I couldn’t find any
books to redesign, I am glad I ended up with the Legend of
Zelda. I even learned something new about Zelda by doing
this project. One small thing is that Epona, Link’s horse
throughout The Ocarina of Time, was named after the Celtic
Goddess with the same name.
One of the main reasons I put in a music section was
because I grew up playing the games, so the music makes
me very nostalgic. Another reason is because the music is
actually a huge part of the whole series, especially for The
Ocarina of Time.
I put in the reception section because as an
introduction to the series I think it is very important to see
how the games did when they were first released to the
public.
Target Audience
My target audience for The Legend of Zelda
ePub that I put together is mainly as a basic
introduction to Zelda. I included the plot of
two different Zelda games so that people
can learn the basic story of the series.
3. Metadata Explanation
The metadata for this iBook design is very straight
forwarded and there isn’t really much to it. I chose to put
Shigeru Miyamoto as the Author because he is the creator
of The Legend of Zelda. I chose to put Koji Kondo, the
composer, in the comments because I felt it important for
this project. There are some writers for the games but I left
them out because I didn’t see it important for my purposes.
4. Art Explanation
I wanted to keep the traditional Zelda look to the
chapter art but I chose this design I found because it had a
more modern look to it. I chose to keep it black and white
because it is one of my favorite color themes and it looked
great for this project. I chose the Ocarina of Time chapter art
because it had a really modern look to it and it focused on
the music side of The Ocarina of Time. For the Link to the
Past chapter art I wanted to keep a traditional Legend of
Zelda look because this game came out a long time ago and
the art I chose is very nostalgic.
5. Enhancements Summary
I chose to include two songs as one of the
enhancement features. I included the Ocarina of Time
theme song for The ocarina of Time chapter and the
Overworld theme song for Link to the Past chapter. These
two songs are some of the more popular Zelda songs
amongst fans.
For another feature, I chose to include the maps of
each game’s worlds. I included these because although they
might be seen as a simple world, when combined with the
music and story the world becomes an amazing experience.
When working with the glossary, I added a couple of
terms not found in the two chapters, but I felt that it was
necessary to give a basic understanding of the plot and
characters in the stories. I also realized that there are so
many more that I wanted to put in but I didn’t want to make it
to complex and stuck with the more important ones.
6. Testing & Results
I didn’t have an Ipad to do testing on
so I used the iphone 5. Everything looks
really good. The text isn’t too small or too
big. I used 1.2 line spacing which turned
out great.
The cover art and the chapter art
also turned out well along with the music
being playable. I chose to have the option
to play rather than auto play as a
consideration to the customer. My Glossary
turned out how I wanted it to look as well.
7. Conclusion
Overall I think this project went well. I like how
everything turned out on the iphone 5. I actually learned
some new information about one of my favorite games from
doing this project so I thoroughly enjoyed the time I spent
putting the iBook together.
If I had more time I would want to do some more
testing on the ipad which is the main device that ibooks are
meant to be read on. I would also love to go into more detail
about each game as well as add the other games into the
iBook. For this project I went with my favorite Legend of
Zelda games but I would like to add the other games in and
go chronologically with the release date for the chapter
order. I would also like to go in more detail about the plot
and music of the games and add a lot more music to the
iBook as well.
