2. ๏ The bladder is a muscle sac that is about the
size of a pear and the shape of a balloon. It is
flexible and itโs hollow.
๏ The bladder is located in the pelvis, right above
and behind the pubic bone and the rectum for
males, and it lies near the front of the vagina
for females.
๏ It is considered one of the most important
excretory organs in the body.
About the bladder
3. ๏ The bladder acts as a storage point because it
stores urine before it leaves the body.
๏ The uterus carry the pee from the kidney to the
bladder, and the bladder takes it out (when
going to the bathroom) by having the muscles
in the bladder push the urine out using a tube
called the urethra.
๏ Before the bladder is emptied out, the bladder
sends a signal to the brain in order to take the
urine out.
๏ The bladder takes waste out of the body.
Functions of the bladder
4. ๏ Urinary stones
๏ Bladder cancer
๏ Overactive bladder
๏ Urinary retention
๏ Hematuria
Common diseases
5. ๏ When the cells in the bladder grow in an
uncontrollable way, which causes a tumor to
form.
๏ The tumor can rapidly spread to fats and
tissues near it.
Bladder cancer
6. ๏ Since bladder cancer is rare, doctors still arenโt
quite sure what causes it, but they do know
that genetic makeup, race, and family history
increase the risk of getting the disease.
Causes
7. Symptoms include:
๏ Blood in the urine
๏ Pee color may change to a pinkish, orange, or a
dark red color
๏ Feeling the need to pee more often than usual
๏ Being unable to pee, or peeing just a little
๏ When peeing, it burns or stings
Symptoms
8. ๏ The doctor will first ask about the patientโs
health and their medical history, as well as if
any of their family members have/had bladder
cancer.
๏ Then the doctor may need to do a physical
exam, which may include a pelvic exam (for
women) or a digital rectal exam.
๏ If the doctor finds something unusual, heโll
order lab tests.
Diagnosis
9. ๏ There are a couple of different treatments available
for bladder cancer, depending on the patientโs age,
health, and how much the cancer has spread.
๏ Transurethral resection of bladder tumor is the name
of the surgery that is mostly used for the removal of
the bladder cancer. It is done by placing a wire at the
end of the loop and removing the abnormal tissues
and tumors.
๏ If the tumor still wasnโt destroyed, the doctor can
use a laser to remove it. This tool is called the
cystoscope.
