1. TITLE OF THE THINKING ROUTINE: Think Puzzle Explore
EXPRESSING EMOTIONS THROUGH ART
EXPLANATION:
This routine helps students to develop independent thinking and inquiry. My aim is to
stimulate their curiosity about Modern Art. This activity will be useful to introduce students
to Modern Art. The central issue are emotions. How can we express emotions through Art?
How can artists express emotions through their artwork? I want students to develop their
own questions of investigation through this routine.
RESOURCES:
- Different pictures
- Piece of paper
2. - HOW ARE YOU GOING TO USE IT?
First of all, I will explain to them the routine and how I want them to think about art in an
independent way, I want them to have their own conclusions as well as their own
questions about art. They can start their own inquiries and that’s what can make them
connect in a personal way with art. They will have to think what does the paintings
express, how does the paintings make them feel.
I will show this four famous Modern Art masterpieces: Picasso’s Guernica, Edvard Munch’s
The screem, Frida Kahlo’s The two Fridas, and Henri Matisse’s The dance.
After showing the images, the students, in pairs, will think about the questions and write
down their ideas about art. They will have some minutes to think about these questions:
1. What do you think you know about expressing emotions through art?
2. What questions or puzzles do you have?
3. What does the topic make you want to explore?
Then, I will ask them to put in groups of two pairs, and write down their conclusions. Finally
each group will share their conclusions with the whole class.
