3. History of the
village
• Horăşti is a part of Motru municipality in Gorj county,
Oltenia, Romania.
• On 24 May 1966, by the Decree of the State Council,
the future town of Motru was organized in the area of
the Motru meadow belonging to the former Ploştina
commune. Since September 1, 1968, Ploştina and
Dealul Pomilor, Leurda, Inşurăţei, Horăşti, Roşiuţa,
Râpa and Lupoiţa have entered the city of Motru with
the opening of the mining area.
• October 18, 2000 is the date when the city of Motru
was declared a municipality by Law no. 180.
• The village has a historic monument, a wooden church
built in 1878 and completed in 1886.
• Villagers still keep much of their local customs and
traditions.
4. The church of Holy
Great Martyr George
• The wooden church dedicated to "Holy Great Martyr
Gheorghe/George" in Horasti, Motru, Gorj County, was
built in 1878. The church is on the historical monuments
under the LMI code: GJ-II-m-B-09313.
• To the west of the church there is a separate bell tower,
made on a metal skeleton.
• Every year on April 23, the villagers celebrate this day. The
term used by the locals is ”nedeie”.
5. Jobs
The main jobs were in coal pits and underground mines.
The lignite reserves in the Motrului Valley have been exploited
since 1960, by the opening of mines: Horăşti, Leurda, Ploştina,
then by the appearance of the Roşiuta and Motru-Vest, and in
1976, the work of opening the Lupoaia quarry.
In addition to mining, villagers occupy jobs in a
woodshop/woodmill (manufacture of wood cuttingboards for
IKEA stores) and a bread factory.
Agriculture is also a big part of local occupations..
6. In the last 10 years, a decrease in the
number of inhabitants has been
observed due to shortage: of jobs, long-
term investments and ageing of the
population.
It is also to mention the existence of a
school and a kindergarten in the village
but which has not been working for
about 20 years. The school gates open
only when political elections are held.
7. The
preoccupations
of the villagers
The main occupation of the villagers is agriculture. As a rule,
cereals are cultivated (maize, wheat, barley, etc.), sometimes in
combination with sunflower, pumpkin or beans.
Livestock breeding is still practised by villagers of all ages.
Caring and beautiing the village.
Pomiculture is another occupation. From fruits is thus produced
alccohol and a large amount of food for future local events, as
well as jam and preserved fruits as compote for the family.
Don’t forget about the wine. Villegers like to drink wine
whether summer or winter (mulled wine).
