         Definitions
         Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE)
This is a metric for characterising and reporting overall data centre infrastructure
efficiency based on annual energy consumption data as follows:
                  y gy p
PUE = Total Data Centre energy consumption/IT energy consumption.
Total Data Centre Energy Consumption is measured in kWh and is the
sum of the kWh recorded on the utility company bills
IT Energy Consumption is measured in kWh. It is the sum of the kWh
recorded at the PDUs supplying the IT load.

Linking Carbon Impacts with Whole Life Cycle Costs

In our SQ17 Facility we have:
         1.
         1 Measured our Construction
            Carbon Footprint, where we can:
              • Our M&E Suppliers are still
                working on their embedded
                carbon calculations
              • Shell & Core has 1,111 tonnes
                of CO2 equivalent
              • Anticipate a total of 3,000 tonnes
                of CO2 equivalent including the

                M&E data
              • Embedded CO2 is 3,000 t per
                MW of IT Load

Linking Carbon Impacts with Whole Life Cycle Costs

In our SQ17 Facility we have:
         2.
2 Calculated our Operating Carbon Footprint:
                • At full load
                • With an annual operating PUE of between 1.4 and 1.5
                                   p g
                • Based on the total UK electricity mix of coal, nuclear, oil, gas and
renewable generation mix and the 5 year rolling grid average of 0.54 t CO2
                  equivalent p kWh.
                   q per
As 6,600 to 7,000 tonnes CO2 equivalent per year
         This provides:
         a) A saving of 3,500 to 4,000 t CO2 equivalent a year over a data centre with a
            PUE of 2.5
         b) The basis on which to build a carbon accounting tool for compliance with:
            - the CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme
            - the EU Code of Conduct on Data Centres

Sustainable Design - Power Usage Efficiency (PUE)

PUE presented so far has been to 1 decimal place because:
         • It varies with IT load, time of day and time of year.

Benefits of Efficient Operation by Sustainable Design

         • Operations, Design, Implementation and Research are all linked in a
           virtual circle.
         • Development effort is focussed at the appropriate stages in the project life
cycle to obtain maximum benefit for cost incurred
         • Sustainable design means we are focussed on minimising our impact on
           the planet
         • Risk management and the use of incentivised contracts mean we deliver
           to cost and programme

         Benefits to Government ICT

Sustainable Operations on the Government Estate
         (SOGE), have the following targets:
         • Reduce Carbon Emissions on 1999/2000 levels by
           12.5% in 2010 and 30% in 2020
         • Increase energy efficiency p m2 on 1999/2000 levels
                        gy y per
           by 15% in 2010 and 30% in 2020
         • Reduce water consumption on 2004/5 levels by 25%
           in 2020
         • Reduce waste arisings on 2004/5 levels by 5% in
           2010 and 25% in 2020
         • Increase recycling to 40% in 2010 and 75% in 2020
         The Ark SQ17 Facility:
         • With a PUE of 1.4 – 1.5 reduces data centre carbon
emissions, over a 1999/2000 facility by more than
                                               y y
           30%, i.e. 2020 target delivered in 2010.
         • Sustainable design and operating practices mean that
we are already delivering the water consumption and
           waste reduction targets identified above

  • 4. Low Carbon Data Centres without compromise p Definitions Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) This is a metric for characterising and reporting overall data centre infrastructure efficiency based on annual energy consumption data as follows: y gy p PUE = Total Data Centre energy consumption/IT energy consumption. Total Data Centre Energy Consumption is measured in kWh and is the sum of the kWh recorded on the utility company bills IT Energy Consumption is measured in kWh. It is the sum of the kWh recorded at the PDUs supplying the IT load. pp y g PDU Power Distribution Unit UPS Uninterruptible Power Supply Autonomy Time the UPS can supply the technical load without an incoming supply. © Ark Continuity 2010 Presentation to GGG Thursday16th September 2010

  • 9. Low Carbon Data Centres without compromise p Linking Carbon Impacts with Whole Life Cycle Costs In our SQ17 Facility we have: 1. 1 Measured our Construction Carbon Footprint, where we can: • Our M&E Suppliers are still working on their embedded carbon calculations • Shell & Core has 1,111 tonnes of CO2 equivalent • Anticipate a total of 3,000 tonnes of CO2 equivalent including the g M&E data • Embedded CO2 is 3,000 t per MW of IT Load © Ark Continuity 2010 Presentation to GGG Thursday16th September 2010
  • 10. Low Carbon Data Centres without compromise p Linking Carbon Impacts with Whole Life Cycle Costs In our SQ17 Facility we have: 2. 2 Calculated our Operating Carbon Footprint: • At full load • With an annual operating PUE of between 1.4 and 1.5 p g • Based on the total UK electricity mix of coal, nuclear, oil, gas and renewable generation mix and the 5 year rolling grid average of 0.54 t CO2 equivalent p kWh. q per As 6,600 to 7,000 tonnes CO2 equivalent per year This provides: a) A saving of 3,500 to 4,000 t CO2 equivalent a year over a data centre with a PUE of 2.5 b) The basis on which to build a carbon accounting tool for compliance with: - the CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme - the EU Code of Conduct on Data Centres © Ark Continuity 2010 Presentation to GGG Thursday16th September 2010

  • 12. Low Carbon Data Centres without compromise p Sustainable Design - local renewable energy and water conservation l l bl d t ti We anticipate that this will enable the site to achieve a PUE of around 1.2 and provide an annual saving of around 6 000 t of CO2 per MW per year over an 6,000 equivalent data centre with a PUE of 2.5 © Ark Continuity 2010 Presentation to GGG Thursday16th September 2010
  • 13. Low Carbon Data Centres without compromise p Sustainable Design - Power Usage Efficiency (PUE) PUE presented so far has been to 1 decimal place because: • It varies with IT load, time of day and time of year. , y y • PUEs quoted have been unqualified in terms of support systems. At low PUEs the UPS efficiency and ancillary l d h l PUE th ffi i d ill loads have a significant i i ifi t impact: t © Ark Continuity 2010 Presentation to GGG Thursday16th September 2010
  • 14. Low Carbon Data Centres without compromise p Benefits of Efficient Operation by Sustainable Design • Operations, Design, Implementation and Research are all linked in a virtual circle. • Development effort is focussed at the appropriate stages in the project life cycle to obtain maximum benefit for cost incurred • Sustainable design means we are focussed on minimising our impact on the planet • Risk management and the use of incentivised contracts mean we deliver to cost and programme © Ark Continuity 2010 Presentation to GGG Thursday16th September 2010
