The Turkish Empire ruled over Anatolia from the 11th century until the establishment of the modern Republic of Turkey in 1923. The Ottoman Empire, the last form of the Turkish state, reached its territorial peak in the 16th and 17th centuries before experiencing a long period of decline over the next few centuries.
