Taught children aged (15 months to age 3 )and parents in their homes who face significant
obstacles to school and life success including poverty, low literacy, limited education, language
barriers and more. Visited assigned families twice a week with books to build literacy and enable
parents with the knowledge and skills for school readiness. Modeled pair appropriate ways to
verbally interact with children using that book or a toy. Books were reviewed at later visits to
reinforce reading in the home. Created an atmosphere in which the parent felt comfortable in
participating and teaching literacy skills to their child. Encouraged and taught that the role of the
parent is a child's first and most important teacher.
