Diversity In The Community
This article is about how several student organizations coordinated to host a gathering sharing their culture and providing students with resources to
help them be more successful in their college careers.
The "gatheration" had food and activities for everyone to participate in. The goal of the event was to familiarize students with the campus while sharing
Native American culture. This event helps promote inclusion in the community and builds a network of resources.
Sources cited in this article include Sky Wildcat (president of the Native AmericanStudent Association),
Donella Moncooyea (president of Alpha Pi , Omega), and Jacob Chavez (member of the Phi Sigma Nu fraternity) Questions: What types of activities do
the organizations do to volunteer in the community? How often...show more content...
The reason I believe this story relates to this week's presentation is because it is a story about student organizations that actively participates in the
community. The article speaks about topics of inclusion, community involvement and volunteering. Each of the people quoted also put emphasis on
networking and providing students with the support and resources needed to be successful after

Why Is Diversity Important To Me
Diversity can be found anywhere and can always teach you something if you keep an open mind. I grew up relatively unaware of how different the
world could be from my own life, but when I went to high school it was a wake up call for me. Diverse viewpoints and backgrounds can lead to the
most amazing achievements and working together is the only way to get there.
As a child, the only people I was exposed to were my family and the people at my Catholic elementary and middle school. While I met some amazing
people that way who still impact my life today, it was a limited way to look at the world. When I reachedhigh school age, I was determined to find
something new, and I found that in a public high school with over six thousand students....show more content...
Even though I cannot ever see myself being an outspoken leader like so many of my amazing peers, I know that I have a passion and a voice to
express. I might not be the one speaking out or starting a protest group against hate, but I will always be a proud supporter and I am learning to not back
down about what I believe in. Being exposed to people who disagree with me helped me to realize that I cannot allow other people's beliefs make
me reject my own. I know now that if I see oppression or I just see a student who needs a friend, I have the ability to be the person to make a
chance. Just watching horrible things happen is not an option. As someone who grew up relatively privileged, it is just as important, if not more so,
for me to support others who might have to struggle. Something such as race or religion or political beliefs should never hold someone back from
success when they have so much to offer the world.
I am only a student still finding out how I feel about the world and my place in it. As I do, I know that I will not back down on my commitment to
working with people different than me. A nation like America has so many talents and strengths in its people, and I know that without all the different
cultures and belief systems that make up the population working together, we would not have half as much potential and would never be able to keep
progressing

Diversity In The Classroom Reflection Paper
When someone is asked to define diversity, the typical response refers to racial diversity within a select group of people. While this is part of what
diversity is, it is only part. The Merriam–Webster dictionary defines diversity as "the condition of having or being composed of differing elements
especially the inclusion of different types of people (such as people of different races or cultures) in a group or organization." Again, the example ofrace
and culture diversity is the example given. However, diversity includes not only race and culture, but gender, sexual orientation, nuclear family makeup,
religion, and even physical and mental abilities or disabilities.
In the classroom, diversity and similarity are always present and when a teacher uses these two conditions properly, learning can be exciting and
relevant for everyone. Everyone in the classroom, both teacher and students, have the opportunity to learn from each other's experiences. No two
people are the same, everyone is different and has different perspectives. Additionally, when two share an experience, their personal history and
perception of the experience will change the memory of how the experience affected them. That is what makes teaching so great. It is exciting to see
students with different backgrounds in the same class come together to achieve a common goal. In a classroom that is managed properly, every student
should feel comfortable to express their differences without to fear of

Elements Of Community Diversity
Community diversity.
Most people have faced discrimination at some point in their lives, this is brought about by ethnicity appreciating the fact that we come from different
backgrounds. Diversity is described as the inclusion of different types of people, it is vital for the community because diversity brings peace and
co–existence as people interact well with each other and respect everyone despite their differences. In this essay, I will define the essential elements that
help in making a community diverse.
The first element that helps to make a community diverse is age, there are different age groups which include the older, middle–aged and the young.
These age groups have different levels of experience and therefore they have different thoughts and capabilities. A good example is that I noted that
the older lecturers in the school are more experienced that the young lecturers who are graduates from universities. As a result of this, they offer
detailed lecturers based on facts while their young counterparts rely on recent materials to make their notes. In the workplace, the older staff have a
lot of experience than the middle aged because they have served in the company for some time. To address this issue, it is paramount to appreciate the
age factor and mix the age groups wisely. They learn how to cooperate with each other and this ensures a learning culture because the experienced will
teach the less experienced, this will bring cohesion among the community. Gender

Equity, Diversity And Inclusion
One of the most striking examples that is commonly known as 'Equity, Diversity and Inclusion' initiatives in higher education in the U.S. Since the last
decade a range of proactive measures has innovated to stop various kinds of discrimination and promote institutional diversity.
UMass, Amherst is the largest public university in New England area (comprises of six north–eastern states) in the U.S. Thus, UMass attracts
underrepresented students to pursue their higher education aspirations. Being a doctoral student at UMass, I have experienced and observed institutional

Persuasive Essay On Diversity
Imagine being rejected for who you are. Imagine working harder than most for a dream position, because you are both a woman and African
American, and finding out you have to take classes to be eligible. So, you go to court because the segregated school denies access to day–time classes,
making you resort to night time classes, called for by the judge. You were separated from your peers and put into an unpleasant situation just because
you had a different skin color. Or, in a different scenario, you are a brilliant scientist that found a way to win the war for the Allies, but your
accomplishment is not recognized for decades because your sexual orientation was viewed as a disease. Unfortunately, these are not fabricated
scenarios, but real examples of struggles that people have faced in the past. These two people, Mary Jackson and Alan Turing, respectfully, fought
their own battle in order to gain acceptance within society. Although these were two specific situations in which there was resentment and unjust
treatment, there have been many more circumstances like these in the past and present. The harsh reality is that if we, as a society, do not take
the necessary measures to address people with diverse backgrounds, this is what our future will look like as well. Diversity has always been
important, but it is evident that it has been met with push back. While the country has boasted about the ability for any person to have the freedom
to prosper and be happy, it seems as if those ideals were reserved only for the straight White people. Over time, society has evolved so that people of
different races and sexual orientations outside the standard mold have become increasingly more accepted and viewed equally. We must continue on
this path to acceptance and understanding in order to rectify for what has been wronged in the past. I feel that I have a special understanding of this
topic and how to approach conversations surrounding diversity because I, myself, am a minority. Though I was born in China, I grew up in America
after my mother adopted me into a caring household. When I was younger, I was somewhat oblivious to world problems and thought that everyone had
as much kindness and love that my mother gave me.

What Is Diversity In Diversity Essay
It had been a wrecked world all along since the World War I until now. They say, the world is in peace. Modernization has fixed them all. But why
there is still war? Are they so selfish in fighting for their own races, that they forget the fact that they are all human. Races, in which means each of the
major division of humankind based on particular physical characteristic. We should live in harmony, which is to live together without fighting or
disagreeing with each other. Diversity in races is more to the culture and the religion of the races itself. Among the races in the world, there must be

Firstly, we will gain unity among ourselves and a harmony life within races will be a reality, not only an unreachable dream. Thus, our bond
between people from other races will be stronger. So, all people in the world will live in safety because there will be no war among ourselves.
People will live in peace and this is because of the acceptance of the diversity in races makes them unite. Apart of that, unity between races also can
develop the tourism in the country. This is because foreigners are attracted to visit our country due to our courtesy between each other. These evidences
strongly shows that diversity in races can lead to various benefits to ourselves.
However, there are some citizens who does not accept or practice the diversity in races. Some of them are too selfish that they don't want to accept the
difference of culture among races. For them, their culture is the best while the others are not. This situation shows that citizens are close minded and

1.1Explain the meaning of Diversity in detail
Diversity refers to the variety of backgrounds, orientations and experiences created within our community. When a community is diverse there is the
presence of different points of views and ways of making meaning which flow from the variety within it. This variety arises out of different cultural,
racial, ethnic, religious, gender, socioeconomic class, political, developed abilities, and/or sexual orientation. However, even as we recognize that
diversity is multi–faceted, we must remember that some aspects of diversity ( i.e., race, gender) have proven particularly difficult to embrace. Those
aspects of diversity deserve special ongoing attention....show more content...

Hausa, and Yoruba, are spoken by millions of people. A few hundred or fewer speak others, such as Laal, Shabo, and Dahalo. In addition, Africa has
a wide variety of sign languages, many of whose genetic classification have yet to be worked out. Several African languages are also whistled for
special purposes.
In Europe: Most of the many languages of Europe belong to the Indo–European language family.

Discrimination And Diversity
Discrimination comes in many forms. Discrimination and diversity are closely linked considering the reasons behind discrimination are what makes
up the definition of diversity. Not only is discrimination made against gender, race, and religion, but it is also made of age, disabilities, appearance
and in a lot of cases, women who are pregnant too. This is very much a reality for many employers. There are laws protecting acts of discrimination.
This topic is so sensitive, that many employers implement diversity and discrimination into their mission statements. Many companies make it their
practice to host training sessions to prevent discrimination from happening, then there are many companies who can't afford such training for their

see hired in on a regular basis and the already existing employees. We have people of all nationalities (within reason considering the community
make–up), women who were pregnant at the time of hire and individuals of all ages and educational backgrounds.
I feel it is important for employers to make diversity and discrimination known within the workplace. Employers need to be aware that there is such
thing as implicit discrimination. "This form of discrimination occurs subliminally without an individual necessarily even being aware of it"
(Ruthergien, 2016, p. 22). If an employee is not taught what discrimination is, how will they know if they are committing an act of discrimination. Not
all acts of discrimination are obvious or common knowledge. Knowledge is power and the more employees know about the topic, the more aware they
will be and less likely to make the mistake in discriminating somebody. Employers should have management training that will aid in the prevention of
making decisions that may be considered discrimination. "We must be able to invent and reinvent and re–engineer the

Cultural Diversity: Discussion Topics
1.Cultural Diversity
During class, we discussed the questions presented in the Cultural Diversity: Discussion Topics. The two questions that stood out to me is, "What is
diversity?" and "Does a positive stereotype exist?" I have talked about these topics in many social work classes, but I did not understand how these
topics effect businesses. My answer to the first question is diversity is a mix of cultures which includes ideas and beliefs occupying the same area.
Without recognizing different cultures, business are not able to provide the best services and their production rate can decrease. The second question
has multiple answer and none of the opinions are wrong. In my opinion, there is a such thing as a positive stereotype. However, the most important
thing about stereotypes is to understand how stereotypes affect people. In business or social work a person who is not aware of their stereotypes can
practice unethical behaviors. For example, not hiring someone because they are a...show more content...

What is diversity? A simple definition of diversity means differences. Diversity does not only mean differences between the Black population and
the White population. Diversity speaks to differences among culture, race, ethnicity, religion, and sexual orientation of all people to name a few. To
function in our changing world, I think it is important to have an understanding and appreciation of diversity. Some people talk about having
tolerance, but I think it is more important for people to have an appreciation. Tolerance means to put up with something that is bothersome. It would
be great if everybody could be aware of our differences and learn to appreciate others for who they are. I will be covering in this Power Point

Diversity reflects how individuals interact with each in all areas of life experience who happen to be different either through gender difference, race,
ethnicity, sexual orientation, age, religious beliefs, etc. I was born and raised in Kenya, a country with diverse population comprising of native
Kenyans, Indians, Muslims, European, Asians, Americans, etc. as well as a country where there are more than 42 different languages spoken by the
population. Kenyan population is comprised of people from different parts of the world but the most unique component of Kenyan population is the
large number of different ethnic groups who speaks different languages and portrays a different cultural dimension. Their choice of living lifestyles,
food, and religious belief identifies each group in addition to locality of their background.
The citizens of the country have to endure more interactions with people of different background and some who speaks a different language in their
daily activities including their workplace. After finishing my college studies back in Kenya, I moved to United States to pursue further studies and what
I have experienced is totally different than my previous life. United States is mainly comprised of individuals from every country in the world making
it a far diverse country

Diversity Reflection
Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to reflect upon the diverse experiences that I have had in my personal and professional life. Fortunately, I have had a large
mix of diverse friends and experiences in my life. This paper will discuss those diversities as well as the plan to expand on my current knowledge.
Keywords: Diversity, culture, differences
Growing up I always had the opportunity to interact with diverse groups. My father is a retired master sergeant of the United States Army. He is
African–American and was born and raised Baptist in Kentucky. He married my mother who is South Korean and Buddhist. I spent the first three
years of my life living in South Korea where my father was stationed. We...show more content...
It is always helpful to have some type of knowledge in case you meet or begin working with a person who is a member of a diverse group. If ever I
encounter someone whose diversity I am not familiar with, I ask him or her questions to learn more. I do my best not to offend them by asking
general questions and let them lead the conversation. I usually start off by asking where a person is from and go from there. I make it a point to let
them know that I am always interested in learning about diverse groups so that they know I am curious about their culture.
One of my favorite past times is going to festivals. This is a great way for me to learn about diverse groups. I only knew what textbooks taught me
about Native Americans but when I moved to Oklahoma three years ago, I learned a lot more than I had ever learned before! I was able to visit the
Museum of the Great Plains, attend Indian festivals, and make friends with Native Americans. Tasting, seeing, and interacting with them made the
learning experience much richer than any book could have.
Not only do I support groups of diverse ethnic backgrounds, I also try to learn more about different religions, disabilities, and social diversities. I
have visited the local Jewish Education Alliance several times in Savannah, GA and I was privileged enough to be able to tour the Jewish synagogue
a few years ago. People with

Why Is Diversity Important Essay
"It is time for parents to teach young people early on that in diversity there is beauty and there is strength." ― Maya Angelou.
Diversity is an important and beautiful concept in our society and this essay will prove why. Reasons to support this are it makes each individual life
worthwhile, it helps us evolve and become better and it can build closer relationships.
Till this day no one has ever lived the exact same life as another person. While we can experience similar situations or be in the same place as an
event was happening, the event would never be exactly the same. This is because we have diverse thoughts, views and feelings. Diversity also allows
us to make our own decisions on what we want to do and who we want to be....show more content...
When we meet new people, we create small talk discussing about interest, dislikes etc. this then may lead to a new friendships or another person to
avoid. Our diverse thoughts, interests and experiences steer us to the people we are close to and love. If everyone was exactly the same our
relationships would be meaningless because rather than having a two way relationship , it will be like talking to yourself. Also because everyone
has their interests and experiences when we meet people who have similar interest and experiences, we can feel excited or relieved knowing there is
someone who we can relate to. This then can create a special bond. Some may believe diversity can divide us because we may disagree on opinions,
have different lifestyles, create subcultures etc. however ignorance is what divides us. We can become closer as a society by embracing everyone's
differences rather than excluding others because of their differences. In other words with diversity will come unity.
To conclude diversity is a beautiful and important concept that strengthen our society by allowing us to have different personalities, opinions and
experiences that makes us the people we are, providing us opportunities to grow and learn and creating bonds between

I agreed with Jacquelin Woodson when she said that diversity is about all of us and about us having to figure out how to walk through this world
together. To live in harmony requires us to be conscious of the hopes and needs that surround us and flexible in all actions. In a harmonious
relationship, each party should set aside their own desires to nurture the relationship itself. Furthermore, we can be in harmony with others only when
we are in harmony with ourselves. Diversity is very crucial because with a diverse environment, people can benefit and learn from others. Why does

learn new things. Being open to see new things and learning about other people without negatively judging them is a form of tolerance. The basic

Diversity In The Workplace: A Case Study
Diversity in the workplace has been a topic of interest to many organizational leaders, policy makers and practitioners in the field of organizational
psychology. According to Bell and Berry (2007), the report for workforce of 2000 was minority (i.e. Black, Hispanic etc.) women will make up most
entrants to the workforce. The United States workforce did increase and became more diversified mostly in private sector (Pitts, 2006). This topic of
diversity in the workplace is close to my heart because I am an African–American woman which happens to be mixed as well but since I am of darker
complexion I am solely seen as Black which means I have experienced some racism within corporate America. My dilemma however; is because I love
all people and happen to be of mixed race I know racism exist but believe it is not always the reason behind the behaviors many deem as prejudice.

meant no harm she felt it was wasteful not to use the tin can but it was the difference in their social status which caused the unconscious bias
(Moule, 2009) and difference in their perspectives. So, there are times a decision is made from a place of ignorance and not racism which is
oftentimes difficult to recognize if instant offense stops communication where clarity may be gained. This is what led me to want to do a research
paper on organizational diversity especially in relation to gender. However, diversity is not just about race (Roberson & Stevens, 2006) it entails age,
gender, culture which is a range of different things that categorize a group or selection of people as

Abraham Lincoln once said, "The strongest bond of human sympathy outside the family relation should be one uniting working people of all nations
and tongues and kindreds." For an organization to work well it has to have a diversity of people, good communication with all the employees, and to
be organized in a way that is effective and efficient to function properly.
I currently work at the Turlock Junior High School (TJHS). It is an organization that is composed of the administrative staff, teachers, classified staff
and students. To be able to function, each branch has diverse group of people working together to make TJHS a better place for children to learn.

The staff helps the students get familiar with the school's process, schedule and what is expected from each student.
Since each branch has different job tasks, communication is very essential among all the branches. For example, if the administration staff does not
inform the teachers about a mandatory meeting, the teachers would not know about it and will not attend the meeting. Therefore, the teachers will be
reprimanded for not attending without being at fault. And as well if the teacher does not inform the administrator staff about a field trip, the
administrator staff will panic when the students are not present in the school.
The school must organize in a way that it can function properly. According to Schermerhorn, J. Hunt, J. and Osborn, R. an organization must "consider
short–term and long–term performance" and it also "requires a commitment to continuous and lifelong learning from one's work and everyday
experiences." And must also a motto of belief in which the school is based upon. At TJHS the motto is "take pride in what you do." This motto is to
be used by all the employees and the students.
Turlock Junior High School takes pride in having a diversity of staff and students, providing communication among all, and being organized to be able
function accurately. Carl Rogers said "If we value independence, if we are disturbed by the growing conformity of knowledge, of values, of attitudes,
which our present system induces, then we may wish to set

Diverse Cultural, Ethnic, And Social Backgrounds
Diverse cultural, ethnic, and social backgrounds function as sources of person, family, and community values. These backgrounds serve as a function
of being the base of the foundation that makes up a family, community, or a person's values. A culture shapes how people experience the world. It
allows them to be a part of a community through interrelation of beliefs, experiences, and traditions that they share through their backgrounds. Social
backgrounds influence how they might view their life values and how they see others. Cultural, ethnic, and social backgrounds affects how someone or
a group may view and experience communicational, nutritional, and spiritual values along with the rest of the 12 domains of Purnell's model.

Diversity In The Community

  • 1. Diversity In The Community This article is about how several student organizations coordinated to host a gathering sharing their culture and providing students with resources to help them be more successful in their college careers. The "gatheration" had food and activities for everyone to participate in. The goal of the event was to familiarize students with the campus while sharing Native American culture. This event helps promote inclusion in the community and builds a network of resources. Sources cited in this article include Sky Wildcat (president of the Native AmericanStudent Association), Donella Moncooyea (president of Alpha Pi , Omega), and Jacob Chavez (member of the Phi Sigma Nu fraternity) Questions: What types of activities do the organizations do to volunteer in the community? How often...show more content... The reason I believe this story relates to this week's presentation is because it is a story about student organizations that actively participates in the community. • 2. Why Is Diversity Important To Me Diversity can be found anywhere and can always teach you something if you keep an open mind. I grew up relatively unaware of how different the world could be from my own life, but when I went to high school it was a wake up call for me. Diverse viewpoints and backgrounds can lead to the most amazing achievements and working together is the only way to get there. As a child, the only people I was exposed to were my family and the people at my Catholic elementary and middle school. While I met some amazing people that way who still impact my life today, it was a limited way to look at the world. When I reachedhigh school age, I was determined to find something new, and I found that in a public high school with over six thousand students....show more content... Even though I cannot ever see myself being an outspoken leader like so many of my amazing peers, I know that I have a passion and a voice to express. I might not be the one speaking out or starting a protest group against hate, but I will always be a proud supporter and I am learning to not back down about what I believe in. Being exposed to people who disagree with me helped me to realize that I cannot allow other people's beliefs make me reject my own. I know now that if I see oppression or I just see a student who needs a friend, I have the ability to be the person to make a chance. Just watching horrible things happen is not an option. As someone who grew up relatively privileged, it is just as important, if not more so, for me to support others who might have to struggle. Something such as race or religion or political beliefs should never hold someone back from success when they have so much to offer the world. I am only a student still finding out how I feel about the world and my place in it. As I do, I know that I will not back down on my commitment to working with people different than me. A nation like America has so many talents and strengths in its people, and I know that without all the different cultures and belief systems that make up the population working together, we would not have half as much potential and would never be able to keep progressing Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 3. Diversity In The Classroom Reflection Paper When someone is asked to define diversity, the typical response refers to racial diversity within a select group of people. While this is part of what diversity is, it is only part. The Merriam–Webster dictionary defines diversity as "the condition of having or being composed of differing elements especially the inclusion of different types of people (such as people of different races or cultures) in a group or organization." Again, the example ofrace and culture diversity is the example given. However, diversity includes not only race and culture, but gender, sexual orientation, nuclear family makeup, religion, and even physical and mental abilities or disabilities. In the classroom, diversity and similarity are always present and when a teacher uses these two conditions properly, learning can be exciting and relevant for everyone. Everyone in the classroom, both teacher and students, have the opportunity to learn from each other's experiences. No two people are the same, everyone is different and has different perspectives. Additionally, when two share an experience, their personal history and perception of the experience will change the memory of how the experience affected them. That is what makes teaching so great. It is exciting to see students with different backgrounds in the same class come together to achieve a common goal. In a classroom that is managed properly, every student should feel comfortable to express their differences without to fear of Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Some are open, others are independently employed individual; some are huge urban colleges, some are two–yr. group universities, others little rustic grounds. • 5. Elements Of Community Diversity Community diversity. Most people have faced discrimination at some point in their lives, this is brought about by ethnicity appreciating the fact that we come from different backgrounds. Diversity is described as the inclusion of different types of people, it is vital for the community because diversity brings peace and co–existence as people interact well with each other and respect everyone despite their differences. In this essay, I will define the essential elements that help in making a community diverse. The first element that helps to make a community diverse is age, there are different age groups which include the older, middle–aged and the young. These age groups have different levels of experience and therefore they have different thoughts and capabilities. A good example is that I noted that the older lecturers in the school are more experienced that the young lecturers who are graduates from universities. As a result of this, they offer detailed lecturers based on facts while their young counterparts rely on recent materials to make their notes. In the workplace, the older staff have a lot of experience than the middle aged because they have served in the company for some time. To address this issue, it is paramount to appreciate the age factor and mix the age groups wisely. They learn how to cooperate with each other and this ensures a learning culture because the experienced will teach the less experienced, this will bring cohesion among the community. • 7. Persuasive Essay On Diversity Imagine being rejected for who you are. Imagine working harder than most for a dream position, because you are both a woman and African American, and finding out you have to take classes to be eligible. So, you go to court because the segregated school denies access to day–time classes, making you resort to night time classes, called for by the judge. You were separated from your peers and put into an unpleasant situation just because you had a different skin color. Or, in a different scenario, you are a brilliant scientist that found a way to win the war for the Allies, but your accomplishment is not recognized for decades because your sexual orientation was viewed as a disease. Unfortunately, these are not fabricated scenarios, but real examples of struggles that people have faced in the past. These two people, Mary Jackson and Alan Turing, respectfully, fought their own battle in order to gain acceptance within society. Although these were two specific situations in which there was resentment and unjust treatment, there have been many more circumstances like these in the past and present. The harsh reality is that if we, as a society, do not take the necessary measures to address people with diverse backgrounds, this is what our future will look like as well. Diversity has always been important, but it is evident that it has been met with push back. While the country has boasted about the ability for any person to have the freedom to prosper and be happy, it seems as if those ideals were reserved only for the straight White people. Over time, society has evolved so that people of different races and sexual orientations outside the standard mold have become increasingly more accepted and viewed equally. We must continue on this path to acceptance and understanding in order to rectify for what has been wronged in the past. I feel that I have a special understanding of this topic and how to approach conversations surrounding diversity because I, myself, am a minority. Though I was born in China, I grew up in America after my mother adopted me into a caring household. When I was younger, I was somewhat oblivious to world problems and thought that everyone had as much kindness and love that my mother gave me. Get more content on HelpWriting.net

This variety arises out of different cultural, racial, ethnic, religious, gender, socioeconomic class, political, developed abilities, and/or sexual orientation. Discrimination and diversity are closely linked considering the reasons behind discrimination are what makes up the definition of diversity. Not only is discrimination made against gender, race, and religion, but it is also made of age, disabilities, appearance and in a lot of cases, women who are pregnant too. This is very much a reality for many employers. There are laws protecting acts of discrimination. We have people of all nationalities (within reason considering the community make–up), women who were pregnant at the time of hire and individuals of all ages and educational backgrounds. I feel it is important for employers to make diversity and discrimination known within the workplace. Employers need to be aware that there is such thing as implicit discrimination. "This form of discrimination occurs subliminally without an individual necessarily even being aware of it" (Ruthergien, 2016, p. 22). If an employee is not taught what discrimination is, how will they know if they are committing an act of discrimination. Not all acts of discrimination are obvious or common knowledge. Knowledge is power and the more employees know about the topic, the more aware they will be and less likely to make the mistake in discriminating somebody. Employers should have management training that will aid in the prevention of making decisions that may be considered discrimination. The two questions that stood out to me is, "What is diversity?" and "Does a positive stereotype exist?" I have talked about these topics in many social work classes, but I did not understand how these topics effect businesses. My answer to the first question is diversity is a mix of cultures which includes ideas and beliefs occupying the same area. Without recognizing different cultures, business are not able to provide the best services and their production rate can decrease. The second question has multiple answer and none of the opinions are wrong. In my opinion, there is a such thing as a positive stereotype. Diversity does not only mean differences between the Black population and the White population. Diversity speaks to differences among culture, race, ethnicity, religion, and sexual orientation of all people to name a few. To function in our changing world, I think it is important to have an understanding and appreciation of diversity. Some people talk about having tolerance, but I think it is more important for people to have an appreciation. Tolerance means to put up with something that is bothersome. It would be great if everybody could be aware of our differences and learn to appreciate others for who they are. I will be covering in this Power Point Presentation What is Diversity? Reflection On Diversity Diversity Reflection Submitted by George Mutunga Prepared for Professor Claudia White HRMG 5000 Managing Human Resources OA F1 2017 Webster University September 3, 2017 Diversity reflects how individuals interact with each in all areas of life experience who happen to be different either through gender difference, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, age, religious beliefs, etc. I was born and raised in Kenya, a country with diverse population comprising of native Kenyans, Indians, Muslims, European, Asians, Americans, etc. as well as a country where there are more than 42 different languages spoken by the population. Kenyan population is comprised of people from different parts of the world but the most unique component of Kenyan population is the large number of different ethnic groups who speaks different languages and portrays a different cultural dimension. Their choice of living lifestyles, food, and religious belief identifies each group in addition to locality of their background. The citizens of the country have to endure more interactions with people of different background and some who speaks a different language in their daily activities including their workplace. After finishing my college studies back in Kenya, I moved to United States to pursue further studies and what I have experienced is totally different than my previous life. It is always helpful to have some type of knowledge in case you meet or begin working with a person who is a member of a diverse group. If ever I encounter someone whose diversity I am not familiar with, I ask him or her questions to learn more. I make it a point to let them know that I am always interested in learning about diverse groups so that they know I am curious about their culture. One of my favorite past times is going to festivals. This is a great way for me to learn about diverse groups. I only knew what textbooks taught me about Native Americans but when I moved to Oklahoma three years ago, I learned a lot more than I had ever learned before! I was able to visit the Museum of the Great Plains, attend Indian festivals, and make friends with Native Americans. Tasting, seeing, and interacting with them made the learning experience much richer than any book could have. Not only do I support groups of diverse ethnic backgrounds, I also try to learn more about different religions, disabilities, and social diversities. I have visited the local Jewish Education Alliance several times in Savannah, GA and I was privileged enough to be able to tour the Jewish synagogue a few years ago. People with

Diversity is an important and beautiful concept in our society and this essay will prove why. Reasons to support this are it makes each individual life worthwhile, it helps us evolve and become better and it can build closer relationships. Till this day no one has ever lived the exact same life as another person. Also because everyone has their interests and experiences when we meet people who have similar interest and experiences, we can feel excited or relieved knowing there is someone who we can relate to. This then can create a special bond. Some may believe diversity can divide us because we may disagree on opinions, have different lifestyles, create subcultures etc. however ignorance is what divides us. We can become closer as a society by embracing everyone's differences rather than excluding others because of their differences. In other words with diversity will come unity. To live in harmony requires us to be conscious of the hopes and needs that surround us and flexible in all actions. In a harmonious relationship, each party should set aside their own desires to nurture the relationship itself. Furthermore, we can be in harmony with others only when we are in harmony with ourselves. Diversity is very crucial because with a diverse environment, people can benefit and learn from others. Being open to see new things and learning about other people without negatively judging them is a form of tolerance. The basic right of every human being is the right for life. We should all be born to grow, study and share life with the people around us. If we cannotaccept others, the problem is not in they, but it is in our attitude towards Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 19. Diversity In The Workplace: A Case Study Diversity in the workplace has been a topic of interest to many organizational leaders, policy makers and practitioners in the field of organizational psychology. According to Bell and Berry (2007), the report for workforce of 2000 was minority (i.e. Black, Hispanic etc.) women will make up most entrants to the workforce. The United States workforce did increase and became more diversified mostly in private sector (Pitts, 2006). This topic of diversity in the workplace is close to my heart because I am an African–American woman which happens to be mixed as well but since I am of darker complexion I am solely seen as Black which means I have experienced some racism within corporate America. My dilemma however; is because I love all people and happen to be of mixed race I know racism exist but believe it is not always the reason behind the behaviors many deem as prejudice. ...show more content... for the office but one of the equity attorneys was upset due to that act to him displayed a status of lack for the firm. Although, the Black woman meant no harm she felt it was wasteful not to use the tin can but it was the difference in their social status which caused the unconscious bias (Moule, 2009) and difference in their perspectives. So, there are times a decision is made from a place of ignorance and not racism which is oftentimes difficult to recognize if instant offense stops communication where clarity may be gained. This is what led me to want to do a research paper on organizational diversity especially in relation to gender. However, diversity is not just about race (Roberson & Stevens, 2006) it entails age, gender, culture which is a range of different things that categorize a group or selection of people as Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 20. Diversity Essay Abraham Lincoln once said, "The strongest bond of human sympathy outside the family relation should be one uniting working people of all nations and tongues and kindreds." For an organization to work well it has to have a diversity of people, good communication with all the employees, and to be organized in a way that is effective and efficient to function properly. I currently work at the Turlock Junior High School (TJHS). It is an organization that is composed of the administrative staff, teachers, classified staff and students. To be able to function, each branch has diverse group of people working together to make TJHS a better place for children to learn. TJHS has employees with different cultural...show more content... The staff helps the students get familiar with the school's process, schedule and what is expected from each student. Since each branch has different job tasks, communication is very essential among all the branches. For example, if the administration staff does not inform the teachers about a mandatory meeting, the teachers would not know about it and will not attend the meeting. Therefore, the teachers will be reprimanded for not attending without being at fault. And as well if the teacher does not inform the administrator staff about a field trip, the administrator staff will panic when the students are not present in the school. The school must organize in a way that it can function properly. According to Schermerhorn, J. Hunt, J. and Osborn, R. an organization must "consider short–term and long–term performance" and it also "requires a commitment to continuous and lifelong learning from one's work and everyday experiences." And must also a motto of belief in which the school is based upon. At TJHS the motto is "take pride in what you do." This motto is to be used by all the employees and the students. Turlock Junior High School takes pride in having a diversity of staff and students, providing communication among all, and being organized to be able function accurately. Carl Rogers said "If we value independence, if we are disturbed by the growing conformity of knowledge, of values, of attitudes, which our present system induces, then we may wish to set Get more content on HelpWriting.net

These backgrounds serve as a function of being the base of the foundation that makes up a family, community, or a person's values. A culture shapes how people experience the world. It allows them to be a part of a community through interrelation of beliefs, experiences, and traditions that they share through their backgrounds. Social backgrounds influence how they might view their life values and how they see others.
