Paperwork – a safety threat
Norwegian Maritime Directorate:
“Human factors cause 66% of all
vessels running aground (1998 –
2008). Thereof 12% of the groundings
were caused by people falling asleep
and 30% due to fatigue.”
USCG statistics indicate 75-95% of all
accidents are due to human failure.

Editor's Notes

  • #3 DNV Navigator is an information system assisting the master and his officers to reduce the paper work related to port calls and sailing in regulated waters. The all-in-one database is containing information from UKHO publications, Lloyds Fairplay Ports and Terminals Guide, IMO as well as national sources. The information is structured and combined with checklists for arrival and departure and is easily accessible. Our services included weekly and automated updates of corrections from Notices to Mariners and other sources. The system also contains the official forms for port clearance purpose (more than 900). Company specific forms may also be integrated upon request. The forms automatically collect data from the vessel specific database and logs (for example crew and passengers, voyage history, ballast water record book, waste log, cargo, stores) and can be completed within seconds or minutes
  • #5 Maritime sector increasingly regulated Intensified inspections from port and flag authorities, charterers and other stakeholders More bureaucracy and paper work Reduced manning – less rest hours Therefore DNV launched DNV Navigator in 2003
  • #6 Maritime sector increasingly regulated Intensified inspections from port and flag authorities, charterers and other stakeholders More bureaucracy and paper work Reduced manning – less rest hours Therefore DNV launched DNV Navigator in 2003
  • #7 The new regulation on Security /the ISPS Code) was the trigger that made DNV go into the business of assisting the seafarers to reduce the paperwork and the probability for doing mistakes in reporting to port authorities. Etc.
