Love and loneliness are not thought of as relating to each other, but under some circumstances, they do. This article reviews the concepts of intimacy and love. It explores what each of these concepts are, and the positive effects that love has on us psychologically, emotionally and physically. We describe what happens when love wanes, the impact it has on our romantic union, what are the causes for its disappearance and how loneliness may, thus, become an integral part of the relationship.

There is robust evidence on the influence of parenting styles on children and adolescents academic achievement. Based on Baumrind’s model of parenting styles, the majority of studies conclude that the authoritative parenting style is the most efficient to enhance academic achievement, in contrast to authoritarian and permissive parenting styles that are most commonly associated with academic achievement in a negative direction. However, there is an important line of research that indicates that culture plays a crucial role in the relation between parenting and academic success and that Baumrind´s model may not always fit the parenting styles observed in non-western societies.

In our globalised world, the contribution of social sciences is crucial, particularly with regard to the challenges of our time. Migrations, transnational undertakings, international issues health and environment related are major concerns that require shared perspectives. We can no longer afford former and standardized responses. Our generation smartly need a deeper understanding of diverse realities. The construction and the dissemination of cross-cultural knowledge’s are essential in order to break through received ideas and misconceptions. Majority and minority world traditions in the psychological sciences. Science is a tool into the hands of the ruling classes who ask questions, determine objects of study and choose attractive notions [1]. In that respect, the mainstream psychology inherited a double cultural halo effect, at the expense of “minorities” (or the dominated groups, who actually represent the majority) [2]. First, from an intercultural point of view, the global preponderance of western culture tend to present western school of thinking as “natural” and universal [3-5]. This ethnocentric vision is consistent with colonialist history of the 19-20th century. Thus, most of scientific theories –not only in psychology, but in social and human sciences at large– assume an individualistic point of view where individual factors explain behaviour [6]. Yet, in most cultures, the sense of self is mostly nested in the relationship with the social and the metaphysical environment [7-10]. Secondly, from an intracultural point of view, studies are mainly conducted with sampled from WEIRD (white, educated, industrialized, rich, developed) countries, typically with young, educated and white individuals, from which results are generalized to the global population [11]. Historically, this western approach occurred when psychology claimed the status of exact science, developing a positivist vision relying on validated concepts and instruments. Wilhelm Wundt (1832-1920), the founder of the first pioneering psychological laboratory in Leipzig in 1879, laid the first stone of a “genuinely empirical” psychology, physiology-related but purposely completely disconnected from the social reality [12,13]. Marking a shift from general to applied psychology, but still relying on the same empirical standpoint, William Stern (1871-1938) introduced the notion of intelligence quotient and coined the term “psycho-technical” to refer to “a technical science, related to causal psychology as engineering is related to physics” (Miinsterberg 1914, cited in [14]). His work did not explore the social structuration but, rather posed the “national nature” as immutable and definitely established [1]. For instance, the intelligence tests do not consider the environmental impact of formation and learning. The plasticity of human nature, the structuration through environment, the lability of psychological trait was denied [1].

For a psychological test or instrument to function properly as intended, items in the test should measure respondents’ performance fairly across different groups of respondents such as male and female. In psychometric literature, the concept of differential item functioning (DIF) has been introduced to address the differential group performance on an item when the groups are equated at the same level of ability or latent trait status. This article introduces the concept of DIF while making a clear distinction of DIF from item bias and simple group performance difference since the civil rights error of the 1960’s in the United States, inequity has become a critical social issue. The area of educational and psychological testing is no exception. The use of testing as a sorting mechanism [1] has brought equity concerns to many people, specifically the testing enterprise. Academic research on group differences and public awareness of them has resulted in the examination of whether tests in educational and psychological testing are disadvantaging minority groups. A well-known incident with regard to bias issue and group differences is “Golden Rule” settlement in 1984. The Golden Rule insurance company in 1976 filed a lawsuit against Illinois Department of Insurance and Educational Testing Service, charging racial bias in Illinois insurance licensing exams. The lawsuit led to an out-of-court settlement, ending the 8-year-old suit. The gist of the settlement was elimination of any items showing different item proportion correct (i.e., proportion of yes/correct answers in an item which is called “item p-value” or “marginal item proportioncorrect) across the compared groups.

In clinical practice, there are times when it is especially wise to explicitly formulate a detailed understanding of a patient and his or her disorders. Such times would include the beginning evaluation at the start of treatment; a time of transfer of care to another professional; and those occasions when progress in treatment has plateau’d, yet the patient’s current status remains sufficiently psychopathological that it is unacceptable as a treatment endpoint. Such a formulation, or reformulation, is useful to insure that all important aspects of a patient are considered in further treatment, so that nothing in particular is overlooked. It is particularly important to recall that psychiatry recognizes multiple dimensions in psychopathology, indicating various foci, for example, on mind, or brain, or behavior, or interactions. This entails considering the different groups of factors that can be impacting the patient. We can say that psychiatry is a “biospsychosocial” [1] discipline, or one that calls for a “systems theory” [2] model. But in the case of a full formulation, one from differing perspectives, what is involved? What dimensions need to be looked at? From a very general point of view, we can recall the interplay of mind and body, of environment and behavior, but what might be considered more specifically?

Emotional arousal has provided the basic driving f orce, whereas cognitive processing contributed to making sensory-motor contacts with reality. Complex cognitive processing facilitated extensive knowledge base of the sensory-motor contacts, as well as helped to create virtual realities. Emotional arousal supported the genesis of responses and actions, as per the cognitive judgments made in the system. The article deals with brief account of the complex nature of interactions between the two systems and how psychology - the mind and behavior emerged from the interactions.

The results of a literature review about the relationship of emotional stress, in its different manifestations, with cancer disease are exposed. Since Galen (129-216 BC), in his book De Tumoribus noted that “melancholic” women were more prone to cancer than others, has been wondering about what is true in those suspicions. Especially that the clinical practice of many specialists points towards a close relationship between this disease and stressderived states, such as chronic depression for example. The cancer is chronic and still unknown in its cause. It consists in the atrophied and progressive growth of the cells in any part of the body, to create a tumor, or to circulate through body fluids such as blood or lymph. Such growth can metastasize to distant sites, and could lead to death. Everything indicates up to now that its etiology is really multifactorial, where the toxic-environmental and the genetic-hereditary factor can be pointed out. However, it has been demonstrated how socio-environmental events imprint genetic mutation, and are coadjutant to the neoplastic tissue, being found within these factors to emotional stress. This state is related to cancer in several ways: One, causing genetic mutation, promoting growth of neoplastic tissue. In second place, reduces the defensive capacity of the immune system to against cancer. Third, through depression modifies physiological functions that favor the disease.

Background: The process of Lobola or Bride price in South Africa is ongoing though there are detractors who state it commercialises females as a commodity. Objective: The researched was aimed to glean the views of students towards Lobola at a previously disadvantaged tertiary institution in South Africa. Method: The pilot study adopted a quantitative approach with a qualitative element. The research used a cross-sectional survey design with a Likert type scale and open-ended questions. A convenience sample was utilised with a 100 respondents (50 males and 50 females to ensure gender representivity). Data Analysis: Descriptive statistics were used to analyse data as well as a Chi square test. Qualitative data from the open-ended questions was analysed using Thematic Content Analysis (TCA) and also presented in tabular format. Results: The results indicated that the majority of the students support the practice of Lobola and see it as a necessary part of African tradition. There were no significant differences between males and females in the sample in their views towards the payment of Lobola.

A case report of a woman treated with a multi-faceted cognitive-behavioral exposure therapy (CBET) for multiple chemical sensitivity (MCS) is presented. The patient reported substantial improvements in the severity of her somatic symptoms, catastrophic thinking about symptoms, and functioning. Improvements were maintained six months after treatment ended. It is hypothesized that CBET reduces symptoms by reducing central sympathetic activation, maladaptive thinking and avoidant behavior. Long-term efficacy of CBET for MCS should be examined in large clinical trials.

This article reviews the experience of loneliness and how it is influenced, and influences, the ill person and the hospitalized individual. Social ties enhance the immune system and help individuals cope with stress and illness. Loneliness has physical, emotional, and cognitive negative effects. Loneliness, which can involve both excruciating physical and mental suffering, is an ancient nemesis. Loneliness is implicated in numerous somatic, psychosomatic, and psychiatric diseases [1]. It is a mundane yet arcane human affliction that is often hazardous to health and hostile to happiness [2]. In this article, I review the experience of loneliness as it affects us when we are not doing well, such as when we are ill or hospitalized.
