Building Campaign
You will be amazed by all you are accomplishing with your support.
We are only $370,000 away from finishing!
Let us press on to finish the work started and
finish this project well. Philippians 1:6
4
Our vision is great, and our $6,000,000 goal is bold, but together we can
accomplish much. Our objective is to continue to impact the lives of more
young people, so they will become the exemplary Christian leaders of
their families, churches, communities, and even of our nation.
To date we have raised $5.2 million, but we are not finished yet! We are
glad to announce that we have a $400,000 matching grant, which means
we have $370,000 left to raise.
Phase I – The addition of the Great Room, three new
classrooms, youth ministry space, coffee café, fireplace, and
	 modernized main building entrance. COMPLETE!
Phase II – Expand and remodel Cafeteria and create new
Commons Area, new School Store, two new preschool
classrooms, new Teacher Workroom, and relocate
	 Administrative Offices. COMPLETE!
Phase III – Remodel Eagle Court with wood floor, height-
adjustable basketball hoops and scoreboards, remodel
	 Junior High Locker Rooms. YETTOCOMPLETE.
Building campaign gifts come in all sizes, from a few hundred dollars to
several hundred thousand dollars. Every gift represents an investment by
the donor and a conviction that what the Academy does matters—now
and in the future.
A variety of methods are available to support New Life Academy.
In addition to the benefits the school receives from your gift, your
generosity may also generate tax savings for you. We ask that you
prayerfully consider how you will partner with us and unlock the
potential of our young Christian leaders. Join us by contacting
Craig Schmalz, Advancement Director, at 651-757-4343 or at
craigschmalz@newlifeacademy.org.
YETTOCOMPLETE!
The New Strategic Plan:
GROW 2020
Without counsel plans fail, but with many advisers they succeed.
Proverbs 15:22
Overview of GROW 2020
Spiritual
Development:
Grow every student in the knowledge and application
of their faith through a variety of engagements and
experiences to impact their world for Jesus Christ.
Teaching and
Learning:
Grow every student in excess of one year academically
and prepare him or her to fully engage God’s calling to
impact his or her world through scholarship.
Financial and
Operations:
Grow the school financially in a way that completes
strategic financial objectives, fully supports student
programming, and provides exceptional resources and
facilities for all programs.
Advancement:
Grow and serve more students and their families,
provide access for families that desire a Christian
education, and equip each student with outstanding
resources and tools needed for learning.
Seeds have been planted, and it
is time to continue strategically
growing our community and
environment. New Life Academy’s
mission is to educate and energize
each student to impact their world
for Jesus Christ and to reach their full
potential in scholarship, leadership,
and service out of love for God and
one another. By creating a plan that
highlights and furthers the areas
listed in that mission, we can better
fulfill our vision to produce spirit-
driven individuals, accomplished
learners, wise leaders, and agents
for positive change.
Throughout the 2013-14 school
year, much of the SEED 2015 plan
was accomplished through progress
in academic excellence, spiritual
development, and professional
development. Our goal was to
provide high-quality, holistic
education in an environment
that transforms students’lives for
Christ, and those results have been
exceedingly apparent over the
last year.
Now as we look forward to the next
year, we will finish SEED 2015 and
continue on with GROW 2020, a
new strategy that shepherds our
endeavors.
We began with IMAGINE 2012, a three-year strategic initiative. After that, SEED
2015 was launched: a three-part plan that focused on providing high-quality,
holistic education in an environment that transforms students’lives for Christ.
This year, we see the thriving application and completion of the last strategic
plan, SEED 2015. Now, we present to you the new strategic plan, GROW 2020,
created in order to steward the plans and achievements of the last three years
and raise up students that will impact the world for Jesus Christ.

Professional Development
To better prepare your students for life, New
Life Academy has Professional Learning
Communities (PLCs) that meet bimonthly to
learn, share ideas, and extend professional
learning to ensure continuous growth for
teachers, as well as for students.
The goals that were set and accomplished this
year are as follows:
1. Purposeful and consistent
Biblical integration
Teachers took advantage of places in
their curriculum, as well as spontaneous
opportunities, to teach and have conversations
with students about God and how He is
working in the world.
2. Aligned and integrated standards in
differentiated lessons and units
Teachers unpacked standards and discussed
vertical alignment so that all NLA students
would have the opportunity to follow a
trajectory of ever-increasing rigor and support.
3. Developed assessments and differentiated
methods of delivery
Working with their teams, teachers developed
common instructional assessments and
differentiated methods of instructional delivery
that measured student progress throughout
the year.
4. Collect, use, and analyze data to design
and evaluate effectiveness
Using a variety of student data, teachers
implemented differentiated lessons customized
to match students’readiness levels and enabled
students to experience continuous learning.
5. Use technology to engage students
and enhance instruction
Teachers used technology to enhance their
teaching and create lessons or projects that
engaged students.
Biblical Integration
One of this year’s goals within NLA’s
Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) was
continued and expanded biblical integration
in curriculum. Biblical Integration starts with
a teacher’s vibrant, personal relationship with
Jesus Christ and a complete dependence on
Him to provide opportunities and wisdom for
Biblical Integration. This personal relationship
leads to a natural expression of God’s glory
within each subject and creates organic
teacher-student relationships.
Academics
Our teachers aspire to nurture your students through the
Word of God while they discover all that the Lord created
them to be. Then, through a curriculum that engages their
mind, body, and spirit, each child grows intellectually,
socially, emotionally, and physically while building a
foundation based in a biblical worldview.
Spotlight on New Life Academy’s
Outdoor Education Class
The Outdoor Education class was a new offering this year.
Whether hoping to acquire new capabilities or honing old ones,
students learned how to respond to emergencies beyond the
basic first aid course, were certified to perform CPR for adults,
children, and infants, and gained practical applications for
activities such as backpacking, camping, hiking, orienteering,
and wilderness survival.
The goal for this new class is to encourage appreciation and
passion for the outdoors in the lives of the students. “Twenty-
eight students were able to experience camping, hiking,
orienteering, rock-climbing, snowshoeing, and fishing—many
for the first time!” says Elementary Principal, Brian Goodbar.
“Watching them learn and work together to cook, clean, plan,
explore, challenge themselves, learn new skills, learn leadership,
team building, and Leave No Trace principles, as well as try new
things was extremely rewarding for us as teachers. We cannot
wait for the next groups to come through the program with us.”
Students are taught according to the Leave No Trace principles
in order to help maintain natural environments while enjoying
outdoor activities.

Carole Peterson
Carole Peterson has been a beloved
part of the NLA community ever since
she began teaching here 21 years
ago. Carole immediately knew that
this would be a different school than
where she had previously taught.
“Being able to teach from a
Christian perspective was re-
freshing,” says Carole, who be-
gan her time at NLA teaching
junior high English and is now
entering retirement after serv-
ing as the librarian. “There’s a
feeling of community among
the teachers and staff, and I
always felt I had the support of
the parents.”
Many of those parents were library
volunteers who were so supportive
and encouraging that Carole doesn’t
think she could have kept the library
running without them! More than
parent volunteers, they became
friends and served as yet another
reminder that the community at NLA
was different from anywhere else
Carole taught.
As the librarian, Carole has been
an integral part of that community.
Though her many years at NLA were
filled with good memories, Carole’s
favorite part about teaching is getting
kids excited about reading. She says,
“When I saw a student have success in
reading and go from a reluctant reader
to an excited reader, I was thrilled.”
Though Carole will be sorely missed at
NLA as she heads into retirement, she’ll
still be seen around the school as the
substitute coordinator and occasional
substitute teacher. In the meantime,
she plans to spend retirement
enjoying more time with her husband
and their four daughters.
Gina Kortuem
Before she began teaching at NLA in
2010, Gina Kortuem had never heard
of the school. Now, she describes
coming here as a“God-blessed
incident . . . It was so awesome to
come to a school that knew its mission
and really followed closely to God in
order to achieve it.”
Currently, Gina teaches a total of seven
English classes and serves as English
department head. Her favorite part of
teaching is working with a great group
of students every day. She says,“The
students at New Life are very driven
and want to make sure that what they
are doing is relevant to their futures.
They keep me on my toes!”Gina is
especially proud when she sees her
students share their true selves with
the rest of the student body through
submissions to the Creative Writing
magazine and giving testimonies in
chapel.
Not only does Gina prepare her
students academically, she knows
that she’s in a position to strengthen
their walks with Christ, both in the
classroom and outside of it.
“A lot of my personal
connections with students take
place when we’re not in class,
but that is what makes them
more meaningful,” she says.
Though the next school year will be
busy, Gina is looking forward to it.
Not only will Gina be investigating
new ways to bring technology into
the English department, she’s also
expecting a baby in October and is
serving as a leader on the 2015
Europe trip!

2013-14 Teachers of the Year
To honor its many outstanding and committed teachers,
New Life Academy established The Eagle Award ten years ago.
Annually, two individuals are selected by their fellow teachers
and are recognized by the NLA community for going above
and beyond in educating and caring for their students. The
2014 awards go to Carole Peterson and Gina Kortuem.

Academic Awards (Continued)
For most baseball teams, the ultimate
focus is being the best and winning a lot of
games. While winning games is an exciting
component, it is not what defines the New
Life Academy baseball team.
Playing baseball for NLA has its perks. Other
high schools in the district average 1,700
students in grades 9-12. New Life Academy
averages 240 high school students. Since NLA
is a smaller community, many boys get to
experience playing varsity-level sports for a
longer period of time. The boys on this team
have grown together, as they
have been playing sports
together at New Life Academy
for a while.
There is more to this group of
boys than meets the eye.
“A big component to how
successful they were is how
close knit they are,”said head
coach Dave Darr. He gave one
example of how two senior
boys went to the home of a
freshman player after he had
a rough game, and took him
out with them for the night.
The bonding of this team is
something that could not be
experienced on a public school squad.
“They genuinely cared for the well-being of
their teammates,”coach Darr said. The caring
nature of the team is not just something that
the coach sees, but something the players
sincerely act on.
When asked about what qualities stand out
about this team, senior John Horner said,
“We cared about each other personally, not
just because we played baseball.”Horner
has played on multiple teams throughout
his career, and said that he has never
experienced this level of faith on another
team.
“It’s not all about winning, but about playing
to glorify God,”Horner said.
Parents also witnessed the unique qualities of
this team.
“As a parent, what I see is more unity,”said
Matt Leighton, father of sophomore player
Tanner Leighton. Matt said that he loves
using sports as a teaching platform for his
son and providing him with life skills that he
can incorporate off the field. Matt explained
that his son gained more character and
spiritual awareness from being a part of the
team this year.
The one thing that stuck out to Matt about
this team was their genuine and true
humility. He said the way the boys handled
the win and carried themselves after was a
true indication of their character.
“They didn’t just become better baseball
players this season, they became better
people,”said coach Darr.

Fine Arts
Performing Arts
Whether it be singing in choir, singing in the auditioned
group, Morningstar, or performing in a musical
or theater production, New Life Academy values
creative expression through performance and drama.
Productions and concerts are always well-attended, and
many of our graduates have gone on to practice theatre
and music at the collegiate level.
Music
Each ensemble provides students with exciting
opportunities to further their muscianship while
developing key leadership skills and self-confidence
through performance and teamwork. The curriculum
first seeks basic participation and ultimately develops
musicians that will share their talents beyond New
Life Academy. Our students’musical journey begins in
Preschool where students develop an understanding of
rhythm, melody, and song.
Visual Arts
From learning the fundamentals of art and exploring
the principles of design, to experimenting with various
materials, our visual arts program is designed to develop
and enhance our students’appreciation of art and their
own artistic abilities - with award-winning results for
many students. Student art work proudly graces the
halls of our campuses.
Program Highlights
• Students gain from the instruction and
inspiration of highly trained and skilled faculty.
• Curriculum is designed to encourage
	 participation, awareness, and promote
creative expression as it integrates with faith
	 and learning.
• Our goal is that our students will develop a
lifelong appreciation for the arts and pursue
excellence that empowers our students in the
	 expressive language of the arts.

Spiritual Development
Training up each child to own and defend his or
her faith is the driving force behind student life
activities and academics. Woven throughout
the student life experience is prayer,
open expression of faith (and questions),
comparisons in light of a secular and a Christian
Worldview, character development and biblical
instruction.
At New Life Academy, students and faculty are
able to participate in events and chapel days
that have the heart of NLA’s mission at their
core: to educate and energize each student to
impact their world for Jesus Christ.
Spiritual Emphasis Week took place in April
this year, and students were able to hear from
multiple speakers about a variety of topics
including using the gifts God has given each
person, the importance of a biblical foundation,
and many others. Students and teachers were
able to take time to pray together, and they
ended the week by gathering together in the
gym to make around eighty tie blankets for
Union Gospel Mission. The week allowed space
for restored relationships between students
and Christ, and many felt bonded after the
experience.
During the National Day of Prayer in May, the
New Life Academy community was able to
come together with the specific goal of praying
for their country, community, school, countries
represented by NLA’s international students,
and surrounding churches. Students, teachers,
parents, New Life Church, and community
members attended the event held in the Upper
Room and gathered together to pray for these
different areas.
“For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others
and to give his life as a ransom for many.” Matthew 20:28

“Buy a Coffee, Buy aWell”
Every Wednesday, high school
students run a coffee shop to raise
money for communities who need fresh water. When the
Living Water team arrived in the Kolakanatham Community,
there were 300 families who were dependent on public taps
provided by the local government, bi-weekly for only a few
hours at a time, to support their growing water demands.
Together with New Life Academy students, faculty, and
families,“Buy a Coffee, Buy a Well”raised enough money to
buy and build a well for the people of Kolakanatham, India!
Cultivating Creativity
Max & Johnna (Lardani) Holmgren (‘06)
Eight years after graduating from
New Life Academy, Johnna and Max
Holmgren are still fostering relationships
and talents that began in kindergarten
for Johnna and 7th grade for Max.
The couple met during their 7th grade year at New
Life Academy and caught each other’s attention at
a new student picnic. After nurturing a friendship
and soon a relationship in high school, they married
in 2010 in Max’s parents’backyard. Johnna said,
“We have many fond memories of our early years
together and most are formed around our time at
New Life.”
The couple not only found love at NLA but also
spiritual maturity. Johnna says,“New Life Academy
and its teachers encouraged an attitude of
believing a faith not because it’s what your family
believes but truly trying to live it out for yourself.”
She says the school encouraged her to experience
God in all forms of nature, art, relationships, and
community that resulted in the couple taking a step
in faith to establishing their own businesses.
Both creative personalities, Max and Johnna
followed after their fathers’and grandpas’
entrepreneurial footsteps and started their own
businesses to garner and cultivate their artistic
passions. For almost six years, Johnna has been
capturing life through the lens of a camera with
her photography business, Johnna Holmgren
Photography. Max, also in the creative industry,
started Bear Fox Chalk, a chalk design company, two
years ago.
Johnna explains, “We are both creatives,
and the biggest thing we appreciated
from New Life Academy was the way cer-
tain teachers recognized that not all stu-
dents learn the same. Not every brain is
wired the same, and not every curriculum
will be equally absorbed. We so valued
that teachers took the time to teach us
in ways that we needed. Specifically, we
think back to our art experiences at NLA
and appreciate the amount of passion
and talent that Mrs. Bateman-Ek [New
Life’s art teacher] provided.”
In addition to building their life together in
Stillwater, Minnesota, Max and Johnna still maintain
friendships they formed at New Life Academy.
Johnna describes,“There were so many ways to be
connected to others at NLA. We both played sports
throughout junior high and high school, and those
were definitely some of our fondest memories.”
From playing sand volleyball and sharing dinners
to simply connecting about life, the couple has a
support system of NLA friends that goes back to
their childhood.
Max and Johnna have a busy household consisting
of their passionate two-year-old daughter, Luella
Beane, Badger the dog, Zoe the kitten, and Mabel
and Beatrice the chickens. With their home
businesses, the couple treasures the fact that they
can intentionally experience life together as a
family each and every day.

You may direct your gift to an area of
specific interest through the Annual
Giving Family of Funds.
Area of Greatest Need
Annual gifts provide vital support for
operations, programs, and advancements
that strengthen academy programs and
infrastructure. Annual contributions to this
fund provide vital unrestricted support to
the area of greatest need.
Tuition Assistance Fund
Annual gifts toward the Tuition Assistance
Fund provide assistance to students whose
families demonstrate need through an
independent financial aid application
process and who would otherwise likely
not be able to attend New Life Academy. An
annual gift to the Tuition Assistance Fund
is your avenue to helping your neighbor
provide a Christian education for his or her
kids too.
Spiritual Development Fund
Spiritual development for each student
is at the very heart of the mission of the
Academy. Guest speakers, special projects,
outreach opportunities, student leadership
development, and chapel offerings are yet
another mission-appropriate way for you to
financially support the Academy.
Faculty Development Fund
The Academy strives to recruit and retain
a diverse faculty who teach to the highest
standards, are passionate about educating
your kids, and are excellent Christian role
models. Gifts to the Faculty Development
Fund provide opportunities for professional
growth and development, and help ensure
that all teachers receive the resources to be
the best they can be.
Athletics Fund
Gifts provide funding for the physical
education and sports programs, along with
equipment, uniforms, field fees, and travel
for all athletic teams.
Fine Arts Fund
Gifts support theater productions, visual
artists, musical instruments, costume and
set design, and community involvement.
Technology and Innovation Fund
Annual Giving provides funding for teachers
to facilitate student learning through
innovative, challenging, and inspiring
differentiated instruction using state-of-the-
art technology, such as campus-wide smart
boards and student computing devices.
Tuition assistance is more than an educational
financial assistance program. For donors, it’s an
investment in students’lives and an opportunity
to play a vital part in impacting their spiritual,
academic, and personal development. Each small
and large gift helps to give students close-knit
relationships that will continue to grow and thrive
even after graduation.
Tuition Assistance helps students
understand who they are as children
of God and cultivate their unique
talents in and outside the classroom.
For NLA students, it’s an open door that allows
them to attend an academic institution that
models faith in its faculty, mission, curriculum,
and extracurricular activities and to have a biblical
worldview intertwined with daily academic
lessons.
It offers parents the chance to see their children
thrive in a positive, yet challenging program in a
safe and healthy environment. Grandparents can
relax in the contentment that their grandchild is
being satisfactorily prepared for life. For siblings,
it provides an opportunity to attend school with
their best friends and experience different kinds
of relationships. For the kingdom of heaven, the
tuition assistance program gives an upcoming
generation of young adults an opportunity to
impact their world for God and to reach their full
potential in scholarship, leadership, and service
out of love for each other, their community, and
their nation.
Tuition Assistance helps students understand who
they are as children of God and cultivate their
unique talents in and outside the classroom. It
gives them the strong, fundamental foundation
of truth which ultimately produces Godly leaders
with integrity, wisdom, and character ready to
engage culture.

Colleen and Alan Stauber believe in a lifestyle of giving and exemplifying it to their community, including their son,
Joe, a 10th grader at New Life Academy.
Colleen says,“We know that giving is an expression of our trust in God and His provision for us.We give where we’re
led by the Holy Spirit to causes and organizations that we believe have an eternal impact.”
The Staubers have always been advocates for Christian education, yet when they sent their son to New Life Academy
for kindergarten, their passion grew. Colleen says,“Christian education models faith and gives children an opportunity
to know Jesus and form a personal biblical worldview, so they can understand that God is the first and the last.”
The Staubers are passionate about financially supporting the school because of the dual position it holds as an
academic institution and a ministry to the community.
“New Life Academy is also a ministry to the community with students from multiple cities and churches, as well as
ministering to children that don’t come from Christian families,”says Colleen.“Giving to NLA is important to us so that
the school can do the best job possible in educating and modeling faith in God.”
The Staubers believe that each student at New Life Academy can make a difference if they are given the support,
encouragement, and spiritual knowledge. Colleen says,
“If every student develops a relationship with God and
becomes a Christ follower, the ripples of impact will go
out to the world and continue to transform lives from the
inside (heart) out.”
The Stauber’s giving attitude is evident in their personal
and spiritual life and extended out to their son when he
personally gave to the Building Fund. Colleen encourages
others to give because,“giving to NLA has an impact
beyond your own life and community for Jesus.”
In addition to giving to New Life Church, Colleen and Alan
have given to the New Life Academy Building Campaign and through Alan’s Company Match. They also played a part
in adding NLA as a supported organization throughThrivent Choice.
After years of seeing her son thrive in a Christian school, Colleen is an ambassador for Christian education and
supporting it in any way she can. She says,“Christian education develops character and values in our children
and is training future leaders in every walk of life. Children should graduate knowing they are loved regardless of
performance, are created for a unique purpose, and that their lives and choices have eternal impact.”

This year’s Auction, held on the first Saturday in April of 2014, broke the
school’s historical record of dollar amount raised! A sold-out auction of 430
attendees raised over $206,800 for Academy students, which is more than
$20,000 over the previous year.
This year’s theme was patriotic, dubbed the Red, White & You Celebration and
Auction. Guests came decked out in their favorite red, white, and blue attire,
and they used iPod bidding devices to bid on over 300 Silent Auction items
and 15 different Sign Me Up parties before heading to Curt Wetsel Court for
dinner.
During the Live Auction, guests generously and briskly bid upon many items
including trips to Hawaii, Maui and the Dominican Republic, a Joe Mauer bat,
a set of braces, and an opportunity to be the Principal for the Day.
A huge thank you to the 23 sponsors, 70 parent volunteers, and 60 student
volunteers that made this year’s Auction a hit! In all, over $206,800 was raised

The NLA Golf Classic, an annual fundraising event for New Life
Academy, promotes community among NLA families and supporters while
raising necessary funds to further the mission of the Academy.
The primary reason we host the NLA Golf Classic is to raise funds to support
Tuition Assistance. Thanks to your efforts, the 2013 Golf Classic raised more
than $28,000! Everything we do is centered on educating and energizing each
student to impact their world for Jesus Christ and to reach their full potential in
scholarship, leadership, and service out of love for God and one another.
This year, golfers enjoyed some fantastic fall golfing weather. Our turn out
was higher than the last four years with 107 golfers, and the event raised
more money than years before for Tuition Assistance. We consider it a great
honor to have golfers and volunteers partner with us as we invest in the lives
of these wonderful kids.

A Letter From the President
Dear New Life Family,
Did you know that being a part of the New Life Community means that you are a
member of our school’s Parent School Partnership (PSP)? Our PSP goal is to support NLA
and its mission by fostering input, communication, and encouragement among faculty,
staff, administration, parents, and students in all aspects of educational and spiritual
development. It is our hope that each of you will take the opportunity to get involved and
give of your time and talents in one of dozens of areas where volunteers are needed.
We have found that by giving even a few hours a year you will not only be richly blessed,
but you can demonstrate to your kids firsthand what it means to give of yourself to help
others. What better place than at your child’s school? There are numerous opportunities
all throughout the school year…day or night, at NLA or from home.
It is so neat to see parents volunteer at an event and comment on what a wonderful time
they have had and see them begin to make personal connections with teachers, students
and other parents. This season in our children’s lives goes so quickly—we hope you take
the time to embrace it and all New Life Academy has to offer!
Don’t hesitate to contact me at dmschumcher@msn.com if you have any questions
on how you can jump in and become part of the New Life Academy family through
volunteering!
Blessings,
Michelle Schumacher

2014 Volunteer of the Year Award: Russ Stoeckel
Russ Stoeckel and his family have been a part of the New Life community for 5 years. Russ
has spent countless hours as a parent volunteer with the Minds in Motion program. Minds
in Motion is a series of activities that stimulate the brain to help children focus on tasks, and
give them the ability to sit still longer. Russ says that he is passionate about this program
because he is helping children to get the wiggles out, which in turn helps them learn better.
Being a part of New Life means a lot to the Stoeckel family.“The education is high quality
and the foundation of the school benefits our children,”Russ said.
2014 Patti Wiens Award: Keith Freeburg
The Patti Wiens Award is given to a leader in the school and,“given in recognition for
leadership that exemplifies vision, service, and commitment to the mission of developing
students who will influence generations for Jesus Christ.”Keith Freeburg, former chair of the
Governing Council is the recipient for this year’s award. Keith has been a part of the New
Life Community since the start, as he was a part of the original group that founded New Life
Church. Keith served as chair of the Governing Council for 3 years, the first 3 years that the
council was a part of the school. He also served for 18 years as an elder of the church, 8 of
those years being on a committee that oversaw the academy. “We have been very blessed
by New Life and have been committed to New Life,”Keith said. His children have attended
New Life, as well as grandchildren. Keith said that they look to the academy as an important
part of raising children.

  • 4. Building Campaign You will be amazed by all you are accomplishing with your support. We are only $370,000 away from finishing! Let us press on to finish the work started and finish this project well. Philippians 1:6 4 Our vision is great, and our $6,000,000 goal is bold, but together we can accomplish much. Our objective is to continue to impact the lives of more young people, so they will become the exemplary Christian leaders of their families, churches, communities, and even of our nation. To date we have raised $5.2 million, but we are not finished yet! We are glad to announce that we have a $400,000 matching grant, which means we have $370,000 left to raise. Phase I – The addition of the Great Room, three new classrooms, youth ministry space, coffee café, fireplace, and modernized main building entrance. COMPLETE! Phase II – Expand and remodel Cafeteria and create new Commons Area, new School Store, two new preschool classrooms, new Teacher Workroom, and relocate Administrative Offices. COMPLETE! Phase III – Remodel Eagle Court with wood floor, height- adjustable basketball hoops and scoreboards, remodel Junior High Locker Rooms. YETTOCOMPLETE. Building campaign gifts come in all sizes, from a few hundred dollars to several hundred thousand dollars. Every gift represents an investment by the donor and a conviction that what the Academy does matters—now and in the future.   A variety of methods are available to support New Life Academy. In addition to the benefits the school receives from your gift, your generosity may also generate tax savings for you. We ask that you prayerfully consider how you will partner with us and unlock the potential of our young Christian leaders. Join us by contacting Craig Schmalz, Advancement Director, at 651-757-4343 or at craigschmalz@newlifeacademy.org. YETTOCOMPLETE!
  • 5. The New Strategic Plan: GROW 2020 Without counsel plans fail, but with many advisers they succeed. Proverbs 15:22 Overview of GROW 2020 Spiritual Development: Grow every student in the knowledge and application of their faith through a variety of engagements and experiences to impact their world for Jesus Christ. Teaching and Learning: Grow every student in excess of one year academically and prepare him or her to fully engage God’s calling to impact his or her world through scholarship. Financial and Operations: Grow the school financially in a way that completes strategic financial objectives, fully supports student programming, and provides exceptional resources and facilities for all programs. Advancement: Grow and serve more students and their families, provide access for families that desire a Christian education, and equip each student with outstanding resources and tools needed for learning. Seeds have been planted, and it is time to continue strategically growing our community and environment. New Life Academy’s mission is to educate and energize each student to impact their world for Jesus Christ and to reach their full potential in scholarship, leadership, and service out of love for God and one another. By creating a plan that highlights and furthers the areas listed in that mission, we can better fulfill our vision to produce spirit- driven individuals, accomplished learners, wise leaders, and agents for positive change. Throughout the 2013-14 school year, much of the SEED 2015 plan was accomplished through progress in academic excellence, spiritual development, and professional development. Our goal was to provide high-quality, holistic education in an environment that transforms students’lives for Christ, and those results have been exceedingly apparent over the last year. Now as we look forward to the next year, we will finish SEED 2015 and continue on with GROW 2020, a new strategy that shepherds our endeavors. We began with IMAGINE 2012, a three-year strategic initiative. After that, SEED 2015 was launched: a three-part plan that focused on providing high-quality, holistic education in an environment that transforms students’lives for Christ. This year, we see the thriving application and completion of the last strategic plan, SEED 2015. Now, we present to you the new strategic plan, GROW 2020, created in order to steward the plans and achievements of the last three years and raise up students that will impact the world for Jesus Christ. • 8. Professional Development To better prepare your students for life, New Life Academy has Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) that meet bimonthly to learn, share ideas, and extend professional learning to ensure continuous growth for teachers, as well as for students. The goals that were set and accomplished this year are as follows: 1. Purposeful and consistent Biblical integration Teachers took advantage of places in their curriculum, as well as spontaneous opportunities, to teach and have conversations with students about God and how He is working in the world. 2. Aligned and integrated standards in differentiated lessons and units Teachers unpacked standards and discussed vertical alignment so that all NLA students would have the opportunity to follow a trajectory of ever-increasing rigor and support. 3. Developed assessments and differentiated methods of delivery Working with their teams, teachers developed common instructional assessments and differentiated methods of instructional delivery that measured student progress throughout the year. 4. Collect, use, and analyze data to design and evaluate effectiveness Using a variety of student data, teachers implemented differentiated lessons customized to match students’readiness levels and enabled students to experience continuous learning. 5. Use technology to engage students and enhance instruction Teachers used technology to enhance their teaching and create lessons or projects that engaged students. Biblical Integration One of this year’s goals within NLA’s Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) was continued and expanded biblical integration in curriculum. Biblical Integration starts with a teacher’s vibrant, personal relationship with Jesus Christ and a complete dependence on Him to provide opportunities and wisdom for Biblical Integration. This personal relationship leads to a natural expression of God’s glory within each subject and creates organic teacher-student relationships. Academics Our teachers aspire to nurture your students through the Word of God while they discover all that the Lord created them to be. Then, through a curriculum that engages their mind, body, and spirit, each child grows intellectually, socially, emotionally, and physically while building a foundation based in a biblical worldview. Spotlight on New Life Academy’s Outdoor Education Class The Outdoor Education class was a new offering this year. Whether hoping to acquire new capabilities or honing old ones, students learned how to respond to emergencies beyond the basic first aid course, were certified to perform CPR for adults, children, and infants, and gained practical applications for activities such as backpacking, camping, hiking, orienteering, and wilderness survival. The goal for this new class is to encourage appreciation and passion for the outdoors in the lives of the students. “Twenty- eight students were able to experience camping, hiking, orienteering, rock-climbing, snowshoeing, and fishing—many for the first time!” says Elementary Principal, Brian Goodbar. “Watching them learn and work together to cook, clean, plan, explore, challenge themselves, learn new skills, learn leadership, team building, and Leave No Trace principles, as well as try new things was extremely rewarding for us as teachers. We cannot wait for the next groups to come through the program with us.” Students are taught according to the Leave No Trace principles in order to help maintain natural environments while enjoying outdoor activities. 8
  • 9. Carole Peterson Carole Peterson has been a beloved part of the NLA community ever since she began teaching here 21 years ago. Carole immediately knew that this would be a different school than where she had previously taught. “Being able to teach from a Christian perspective was re- freshing,” says Carole, who be- gan her time at NLA teaching junior high English and is now entering retirement after serv- ing as the librarian. “There’s a feeling of community among the teachers and staff, and I always felt I had the support of the parents.” Many of those parents were library volunteers who were so supportive and encouraging that Carole doesn’t think she could have kept the library running without them! More than parent volunteers, they became friends and served as yet another reminder that the community at NLA was different from anywhere else Carole taught. As the librarian, Carole has been an integral part of that community. Though her many years at NLA were filled with good memories, Carole’s favorite part about teaching is getting kids excited about reading. She says, “When I saw a student have success in reading and go from a reluctant reader to an excited reader, I was thrilled.” Though Carole will be sorely missed at NLA as she heads into retirement, she’ll still be seen around the school as the substitute coordinator and occasional substitute teacher. In the meantime, she plans to spend retirement enjoying more time with her husband and their four daughters. Gina Kortuem Before she began teaching at NLA in 2010, Gina Kortuem had never heard of the school. Now, she describes coming here as a“God-blessed incident . . . It was so awesome to come to a school that knew its mission and really followed closely to God in order to achieve it.” Currently, Gina teaches a total of seven English classes and serves as English department head. Her favorite part of teaching is working with a great group of students every day. She says,“The students at New Life are very driven and want to make sure that what they are doing is relevant to their futures. They keep me on my toes!”Gina is especially proud when she sees her students share their true selves with the rest of the student body through submissions to the Creative Writing magazine and giving testimonies in chapel. Not only does Gina prepare her students academically, she knows that she’s in a position to strengthen their walks with Christ, both in the classroom and outside of it. “A lot of my personal connections with students take place when we’re not in class, but that is what makes them more meaningful,” she says. Though the next school year will be busy, Gina is looking forward to it. Not only will Gina be investigating new ways to bring technology into the English department, she’s also expecting a baby in October and is serving as a leader on the 2015 Europe trip! 9 2013-14 Teachers of the Year To honor its many outstanding and committed teachers, New Life Academy established The Eagle Award ten years ago. Annually, two individuals are selected by their fellow teachers and are recognized by the NLA community for going above and beyond in educating and caring for their students. The 2014 awards go to Carole Peterson and Gina Kortuem.

  • 12. For most baseball teams, the ultimate focus is being the best and winning a lot of games. While winning games is an exciting component, it is not what defines the New Life Academy baseball team. Playing baseball for NLA has its perks. Other high schools in the district average 1,700 students in grades 9-12. New Life Academy averages 240 high school students. Since NLA is a smaller community, many boys get to experience playing varsity-level sports for a longer period of time. The boys on this team have grown together, as they have been playing sports together at New Life Academy for a while. There is more to this group of boys than meets the eye. “A big component to how successful they were is how close knit they are,”said head coach Dave Darr. He gave one example of how two senior boys went to the home of a freshman player after he had a rough game, and took him out with them for the night. The bonding of this team is something that could not be experienced on a public school squad. “They genuinely cared for the well-being of their teammates,”coach Darr said. The caring nature of the team is not just something that the coach sees, but something the players sincerely act on. When asked about what qualities stand out about this team, senior John Horner said, “We cared about each other personally, not just because we played baseball.”Horner has played on multiple teams throughout his career, and said that he has never experienced this level of faith on another team. “It’s not all about winning, but about playing to glorify God,”Horner said. Parents also witnessed the unique qualities of this team. “As a parent, what I see is more unity,”said Matt Leighton, father of sophomore player Tanner Leighton. Matt said that he loves using sports as a teaching platform for his son and providing him with life skills that he can incorporate off the field. Matt explained that his son gained more character and spiritual awareness from being a part of the team this year. The one thing that stuck out to Matt about this team was their genuine and true humility. He said the way the boys handled the win and carried themselves after was a true indication of their character. “They didn’t just become better baseball players this season, they became better people,”said coach Darr. Fine Arts Performing Arts Whether it be singing in choir, singing in the auditioned group, Morningstar, or performing in a musical or theater production, New Life Academy values creative expression through performance and drama. Productions and concerts are always well-attended, and many of our graduates have gone on to practice theatre and music at the collegiate level. Music Each ensemble provides students with exciting opportunities to further their muscianship while developing key leadership skills and self-confidence through performance and teamwork. The curriculum first seeks basic participation and ultimately develops musicians that will share their talents beyond New Life Academy. Our students’musical journey begins in Preschool where students develop an understanding of rhythm, melody, and song. Visual Arts From learning the fundamentals of art and exploring the principles of design, to experimenting with various materials, our visual arts program is designed to develop and enhance our students’appreciation of art and their own artistic abilities - with award-winning results for many students. Student art work proudly graces the halls of our campuses. Program Highlights • Students gain from the instruction and inspiration of highly trained and skilled faculty. • Curriculum is designed to encourage participation, awareness, and promote creative expression as it integrates with faith and learning. • Our goal is that our students will develop a lifelong appreciation for the arts and pursue excellence that empowers our students in the expressive language of the arts. 13

Spiritual Development Training up each child to own and defend his or her faith is the driving force behind student life activities and academics. Woven throughout the student life experience is prayer, open expression of faith (and questions), comparisons in light of a secular and a Christian Worldview, character development and biblical instruction. At New Life Academy, students and faculty are able to participate in events and chapel days that have the heart of NLA’s mission at their core: to educate and energize each student to impact their world for Jesus Christ. Spiritual Emphasis Week took place in April this year, and students were able to hear from multiple speakers about a variety of topics including using the gifts God has given each person, the importance of a biblical foundation, and many others. Students and teachers were able to take time to pray together, and they ended the week by gathering together in the gym to make around eighty tie blankets for Union Gospel Mission. The week allowed space for restored relationships between students and Christ, and many felt bonded after the experience. During the National Day of Prayer in May, the New Life Academy community was able to come together with the specific goal of praying for their country, community, school, countries represented by NLA’s international students, and surrounding churches. Students, teachers, parents, New Life Church, and community members attended the event held in the Upper Room and gathered together to pray for these different areas. “For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many.” Matthew 20:28 14 Students pray together on the National Day of Prayer Students making blankets for Union Gospel Mission Worship during weekly chapel Spotlight on “Buy a Coffee, Buy aWell” Every Wednesday, high school students run a coffee shop to raise money for communities who need fresh water. When the Living Water team arrived in the Kolakanatham Community, there were 300 families who were dependent on public taps provided by the local government, bi-weekly for only a few hours at a time, to support their growing water demands. Together with New Life Academy students, faculty, and families,“Buy a Coffee, Buy a Well”raised enough money to buy and build a well for the people of Kolakanatham, India!

Cultivating Creativity Max & Johnna (Lardani) Holmgren (‘06) Eight years after graduating from New Life Academy, Johnna and Max Holmgren are still fostering relationships and talents that began in kindergarten for Johnna and 7th grade for Max. The couple met during their 7th grade year at New Life Academy and caught each other’s attention at a new student picnic. After nurturing a friendship and soon a relationship in high school, they married in 2010 in Max’s parents’backyard. Johnna said, “We have many fond memories of our early years together and most are formed around our time at New Life.” The couple not only found love at NLA but also spiritual maturity. Johnna says,“New Life Academy and its teachers encouraged an attitude of believing a faith not because it’s what your family believes but truly trying to live it out for yourself.” She says the school encouraged her to experience God in all forms of nature, art, relationships, and community that resulted in the couple taking a step in faith to establishing their own businesses. Both creative personalities, Max and Johnna followed after their fathers’and grandpas’ entrepreneurial footsteps and started their own businesses to garner and cultivate their artistic passions. For almost six years, Johnna has been capturing life through the lens of a camera with her photography business, Johnna Holmgren Photography. Max, also in the creative industry, started Bear Fox Chalk, a chalk design company, two years ago. Johnna explains, “We are both creatives, and the biggest thing we appreciated from New Life Academy was the way cer- tain teachers recognized that not all stu- dents learn the same. Not every brain is wired the same, and not every curriculum will be equally absorbed. We so valued that teachers took the time to teach us in ways that we needed. Specifically, we think back to our art experiences at NLA and appreciate the amount of passion and talent that Mrs. Bateman-Ek [New Life’s art teacher] provided.” In addition to building their life together in Stillwater, Minnesota, Max and Johnna still maintain friendships they formed at New Life Academy. Johnna describes,“There were so many ways to be connected to others at NLA. We both played sports throughout junior high and high school, and those were definitely some of our fondest memories.” From playing sand volleyball and sharing dinners to simply connecting about life, the couple has a support system of NLA friends that goes back to their childhood. Max and Johnna have a busy household consisting of their passionate two-year-old daughter, Luella Beane, Badger the dog, Zoe the kitten, and Mabel and Beatrice the chickens. With their home businesses, the couple treasures the fact that they can intentionally experience life together as a family each and every day. 15 ALUMNI

  • 18. Tuition assistance is more than an educational financial assistance program. For donors, it’s an investment in students’lives and an opportunity to play a vital part in impacting their spiritual, academic, and personal development. Each small and large gift helps to give students close-knit relationships that will continue to grow and thrive even after graduation. Tuition Assistance helps students understand who they are as children of God and cultivate their unique talents in and outside the classroom. For NLA students, it’s an open door that allows them to attend an academic institution that models faith in its faculty, mission, curriculum, and extracurricular activities and to have a biblical worldview intertwined with daily academic lessons. It offers parents the chance to see their children thrive in a positive, yet challenging program in a safe and healthy environment. Grandparents can relax in the contentment that their grandchild is being satisfactorily prepared for life. For siblings, it provides an opportunity to attend school with their best friends and experience different kinds of relationships. For the kingdom of heaven, the tuition assistance program gives an upcoming generation of young adults an opportunity to impact their world for God and to reach their full potential in scholarship, leadership, and service out of love for each other, their community, and their nation. Tuition Assistance helps students understand who they are as children of God and cultivate their unique talents in and outside the classroom. It gives them the strong, fundamental foundation of truth which ultimately produces Godly leaders with integrity, wisdom, and character ready to engage culture. 18 Giving:TuitionAssistanceChangesLives Whether it’s helping out in the library, working with the annual Auction or Golf Tournament, or serving in A la Carte, there are a host of different ways to use your abilities and get involved! • 19. GivingtheGlorytoGod AProfileonGiving Colleen and Alan Stauber believe in a lifestyle of giving and exemplifying it to their community, including their son, Joe, a 10th grader at New Life Academy. Colleen says,“We know that giving is an expression of our trust in God and His provision for us.We give where we’re led by the Holy Spirit to causes and organizations that we believe have an eternal impact.” The Staubers have always been advocates for Christian education, yet when they sent their son to New Life Academy for kindergarten, their passion grew. Colleen says,“Christian education models faith and gives children an opportunity to know Jesus and form a personal biblical worldview, so they can understand that God is the first and the last.” The Staubers are passionate about financially supporting the school because of the dual position it holds as an academic institution and a ministry to the community. “New Life Academy is also a ministry to the community with students from multiple cities and churches, as well as ministering to children that don’t come from Christian families,”says Colleen.“Giving to NLA is important to us so that the school can do the best job possible in educating and modeling faith in God.” The Staubers believe that each student at New Life Academy can make a difference if they are given the support, encouragement, and spiritual knowledge. Colleen says, “If every student develops a relationship with God and becomes a Christ follower, the ripples of impact will go out to the world and continue to transform lives from the inside (heart) out.” The Stauber’s giving attitude is evident in their personal and spiritual life and extended out to their son when he personally gave to the Building Fund. Colleen encourages others to give because,“giving to NLA has an impact beyond your own life and community for Jesus.” In addition to giving to New Life Church, Colleen and Alan have given to the New Life Academy Building Campaign and through Alan’s Company Match. They also played a part in adding NLA as a supported organization throughThrivent Choice. After years of seeing her son thrive in a Christian school, Colleen is an ambassador for Christian education and supporting it in any way she can. She says,“Christian education develops character and values in our children and is training future leaders in every walk of life. Children should graduate knowing they are loved regardless of performance, are created for a unique purpose, and that their lives and choices have eternal impact.” 19 InterestedinVolunteering? • 22. A Letter From the President Dear New Life Family, Did you know that being a part of the New Life Community means that you are a member of our school’s Parent School Partnership (PSP)? Our PSP goal is to support NLA and its mission by fostering input, communication, and encouragement among faculty, staff, administration, parents, and students in all aspects of educational and spiritual development. It is our hope that each of you will take the opportunity to get involved and give of your time and talents in one of dozens of areas where volunteers are needed. We have found that by giving even a few hours a year you will not only be richly blessed, but you can demonstrate to your kids firsthand what it means to give of yourself to help others. What better place than at your child’s school? There are numerous opportunities all throughout the school year…day or night, at NLA or from home. It is so neat to see parents volunteer at an event and comment on what a wonderful time they have had and see them begin to make personal connections with teachers, students and other parents. This season in our children’s lives goes so quickly—we hope you take the time to embrace it and all New Life Academy has to offer! Don’t hesitate to contact me at dmschumcher@msn.com if you have any questions on how you can jump in and become part of the New Life Academy family through volunteering! Blessings, Michelle Schumacher PSP President Parent School Partnership (PSP) WaystoGetInvolved Opportunities for getting involved abound at New Life Academy, and we are eager to place you where your gifts lead you! Some PSP volunteer opportunities available are: • New Family Welcome Program • Room Parent Program • Prayer for Teachers, Staff & Students • Teacher and Staff Appreciation Events • Jump Start Playdates & Family Picnics Why Get Involved? • Promote the mission of New Life Academy. • Raise funds to enrich New Life Academy school curriculum. • Provide fellowship opportunities for families. • Recognize faculty and staff effort. You and your volunteering hours are a blessing to us at NLA. Thank you for all that you do! Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving. –Colossians 3:23-24 22
