Carbon Credit wholesaler dealing with 35
Brokers :-
Recruited to re-design a malfunctioning Filemaker 12 database for the tracking and sales
of carbon credits. I set up a remote Filemaker Server so that external Brokers can
access available Carbon credits to sell to the public. An online system
that enabled each broker to monitor progress of sales through to completion.
All new brokers were offered a website, logo design & brochure package
for which I was also responsible.
My design brief was to dissect the existing Filemaker database system
that was flawed in so many ways. I began by adding new functions that
were missing and addressed the corrupt data issues.
Then I addressed the over complicated GUI and made the system
easy to access without confusing pop-up layers.
When designing the new GUI, I began by working with each user
individually, highlighted their needs and responsibilities, then a
new design was implemented and rolled out on a modular basis
allowing the new system to run alongside the old system using
the same data to avoid any interuptions of service.
This new design saved the company many hours of wasted time
performing unecessary tasks and allowed for new reporting of
time management.

Recruited to design a data capture system for telesales leads marketing company lo-
cated in Southampton.
The database system was designed using Filemaker 12 and captured client
details, existing insurance and pension information in order to ascertain if a
client review would be required.
The system needed to automatically connect to telephone auto-dialer system
allowing telesales operators to automatically view client record details upon the
answering of the call. The system automatically generated and sent pdf attach-
ment lead referral emails direct to suitable
insurance brokers within the UK.
Also within the organisation was an insurance broker
advisory service called Turner and Young, and some records needed to be
re-directed to an internal insurance advisor, and a corresponding insurance
Fact Find questionnaire needed to be completed for each client using the
Filemaker database in accordance with FSA's strict guidelines in order to
ascertain their client's suitability and recording due diligence.
Client confidentiality was strictly observed regarding commission values,
personal details, etc as I designed the system to disable "export" and
"save" functions from the database unless strict admin rights via log in pri-
validge set was enabled.
My system has enabled the company to become much more efficient and
able to access client details (with the correct log in details), easier and quicker
than before thus improving efficiency

TVT Televersioning, localisation and media supply
company providing bespoke solutions to meet
client requirements and budgets.
Their services include:
Commissioned to design and develop a bespoke Filemaker database
driven compliance system for BBC Worldwide with integrated video
viewer. This integrated video viewer and logging (EDL) system replaced a
slow non searchable spreadsheet system, therefore increasing efficiency
and reducing costs. Upon completion of this project, I was then tasked to
design and develop a complete tracking database solution for a recently
acquired £3.5m contract with UKTV
Significant achievement
Designed and developed a full database driven Compliance system using the
separation model bringing information together and enabling searches. Also
designed a relational tracking database to track television
programmes from Ingest through to media archiving for UKTV giving complete
access to all job stages via an XML interchange process connecting to their own
SQL database. A significant achievement was to integrate a full QuickTime
video viewer into Filemaker for the compliance and Editor edit decision logs (EDL).

Commissioned to re-design and enhance an out
of date flat file Filemaker database with a GUI interface and adding new
relational tables bringing it up to FM11 and FM11 Server specifications.
Liaised with the asset manager and technical IT support to install and
implement 50 new Filemaker Pro applications for users.
Modules designed include:-
License tracking, License renewal reminders, Episode history, Contact and Client
systems, Compliance, Ingest Job Tracking.
Significant achievements: Re-designed a complete new GUI taking
advantage of larger LCD screen resolutions available and integrating
company logo, colours etc.
Created an auto licence renewal system giving advance email notifications to
the appropriate departments.
Designed and created a Compliance system with integrated video
viewer in Filemaker.
Extensive sanitising of old corrupt data, upgrading and exporting to new
relational tables. Completed on time and within budget, substantially improved
efficiency and reduced costs.

5. My Design Process:-
l I collaborate with the client, listening to their requirements, budget and time specifications,
along with any future expansion plans. Future plans are important because this will dictate
how the database and backend relationships should be designed.
l I take copious notes about the project and suggest possible functionality. I then write-up
these notes in a bullet point format, and if needed create a flow chart of the job process.
l I create layout mockups, which give an example of how the user interface will look and will
highlight all project elements, saving any design flaws later. By creating visual
mockups I can enhance the design process, inviting questions and answers about the
proposed layout/project. This process makes the design more relevant to the client.
l The design of the Database will begin by breaking the solution down into
modules/parts.
l I show the progress on completion of each module/part and discuss design elements, usually with a
show & tell meeting. This enables a testing phase and any problems/bug fixes to be reported and corrected at
this stage.
l I use a strict versioning system allowing for module rollout and rollback functionality.
l My scripting has copious notes for future expansion or other Filemaker developers to
follow on.
l A systems architecture document is produced describing table structure and relationships along with key
scripting deployment.
l Final testing before rollout.
