2. Widely regarded as Romania's most
traditional region, dotted with steepled
wooden churches and farmhouses fronted by
ornately carved gates, Maramureş feels as if
you are climbing into a horse-drawn time
machine and heading back a couple of
centuries.
Welcome to Maramures
3. This monastery complex lived-
in by nuns is home to the tallest
wooden structure in Europe,
having 78 meters in height. The
church was built in 1997 using
traditional methods and it is covered
in 8.5 kg of gold, making it easy to
sport from a distance. The base of the
church is made of stone, but the rest of
it is built of oak and, as everywhere in
Maramures, the exterior wooden
carvings are of particular beauty.

4. Merry Cemetery of
Sapanta
It is probably the most well-known tourist sight on our list of
best 15 attractions in Maramures that you must see. Unlike
most graveyards in the world, the Merry Cemetery of Sapanta
has a unique approach to death, seeing it as a
celebration of a life that ended rather than a tragic
event. It all started in the 1930s when Stan Ion Patras
carved his first oak cross. Each cross in the cemetery is
painted in a particular shade of blue, now known as
“Sapanta blue” and decorated with traditional motifs.
5. Cascada Cailor or Cascada
Izvorul Cailor is a 100 meter high
waterfall that plunges down the
mountains in three steps (40-20-
40 meter).
The waterfall is located in Piatra
Rea Natural reserve, 3 km (1.8
miles) away from Borsa Resort at
an elevation of 1300 m (4265 ft).
The waterfall is formed on
Fantana (“Well” in Romanian)
creek and springs from Podul
Cailor plateau.
