Short Story Analysis
In the summer of 1978 In Nashville, Tennessee, the 80–year–old former Combat medic John Franklin was with his grandchildren. He was telling a
story about how he broke his neck on a shallow lake in Ohio in 1912. As he jumped into the story he was explaining the theory of the butterfly
effect with examples of if he moved his finger or flexed his muscle in a different way history would be different and possibly wouldn't have been
with his two grandchildren on that day. He started off by saying that in that situation he was the 1 and 1,000 people that survive a broken neck. He
said, "I recovered in no time and that is when I tried to strengthen my faith in God because on that night he was protecting me". He continued with the
story and preached the lesson of how God always looks out for you and knows what is best. As he got back into the story he was interrupted by the
kitchen timer, That was the reminder to read the bible verse of the day. As he started, Bill his youngest grandson interrupted him and asked "grandpa
did you ever fight in world war 1" He paused and said no son I never fought in world war 1. He continued on and said "you know what boys I'm gonna
tell you both a story that will fill the verses slot today. Billy this will answer your question. So, boys, I was a young boy barely 18 in 1916 and I was in a
little bit of a conflict. I was compelled by the biggest decision of my life, should I get on that bus to enlist or stay home and become a missionary

Conflicts
Conflict means a struggle or problem between two opposing groups or individuals. There are two types of conflict: internal and external conflict. An
internal conflict is a struggle that is internalized and deals with choices, consequences, or emotions. An internal conflict is a man vs. self struggle. An
external conflict is a struggle between the protagonist and another character against nature or some outside force. External conflicts are either man
verses man, man verses nature, or man verses society. Various examples of internal and external conflicts can be shown in Guy de Maupassant's "The
Necklace," Richard Connell's "The Most Dangerous Game," and O.Henry's, "The Gift of the Magi." Firstly, Guy de Maupassant's "The Necklace" shows

He is put into a situation where he has to swim until he finds shelter. He swims, and "for a seemingly endless time he fought the sea" (Connell 42).
After a while, he found an island called Ship Trap Island. So, this shows how he fought against nature. Another example of conflict in this story is
when Rainsford has to fight against General Zaroff, who is an expert at hunting humans on Ship Trap Island. As Rainsford gets challenged by
Zaroff, he says, "'Thank you, I'm a hunter, not a murderer'" (49). This shows an example of another external conflict. But, this one is a man verses
man conflict because Rainsford is facing a problem with another character in the story. Therefore, Rainsford faces many situations where he has to
choose between life or death. Lastly, examples of conflict can be shown in "The Gift of the Magi" by O.Henry. This story is about a cute couple
that is willing to do anything to buy each other Christmas presents. An internal conflict faced by Della Young, the protagonist, is when she does not
have enough money to buy her husband Jim a present. All Della had was "one dollar and eighty seven cents. And the next day would be Christmas"
(O. Henry 153). To get more money, Della sells her most prized possession, which is her hair. After Della and Jim finally bought their presents by
selling their most prized possessions, another conflict arose. Della bought Jim a chain for his watch, and Jim bought Della hair combs that she

Short Story Elements Analysis
Garcia Marquez combines fantastical elements with realistic issues to create a fascinating story that is worth of reading. While angel is used in
advancing the theme of realism, bird mad represents individuals who focus on fantasy and deny what reality has to offer. Garcia manages to use
detailed sensory imagery to enhance the vividness of the story. The audience can actually "see" the old man, "feel" him, and even "smell" him.
Garcia's use of imagery also contradicts the reader's traditional perception of angels. In addition to that, worthy of mentioning is the way Garcia
describes the young man. The "Bird man" is highlighted as a man of extreme weakness.
Garcia makes the short story interesting to read by mixing different kinds of imagery.

The short story and Essay writing
Short stories are mainly written to grab the reader's attention and thus make them reflect and become drawn into the story even more. So why is a
short story important? They are important and effective due to the fact that any reader can relate to the story or a particular character as they can be
universal. In this TMA I will be tracing the elements of conflicts within the three short stories. These conflicts will consist of man vs man, man vs
society and man vs nature. Furthermore, I will talk about the internal and external conflicts in the stories in the following paragraphs.
There are many different types of conflicts within the short stories such as the man vs man in...show more content...
It coincidentally happens to be that Jimmy was working as a police patrol in that area where they planned on meeting. After meeting a man at the
appointed place, Jimmy realises that it is in fact his friend Bob. However, he does not reveal himself to him as he learns that his' friend' is a wanted
thief in Chicago, this can be supported by the image of Bob as he is said to be dressed well and wearing 'large diamonds' on his scarf. Jimmy leaves
bob and sends another police officer in normal clothing pretending to be his friend, he knows as a police officer he is supposed to arrest him but he just
couldn't do that to his long lost friend hence why he sends another man. Although, Bob senses that the sent man does not look like Jimmy, he
continuous in engaging in the conversation with him. The short story unfolds with Bob being arrested by the man and at the same time being handed
over a note. It states in the note that Bob in fact did meet his friend (Jimmy) the police officer, that met up with him and he goes on by explaining that
he recognised Bob's face to be a wanted man from Chicago. Nevertheless, he could not bear to arrest his friend and that's why he sent another man to

A Formalist Approach On A Short Story

A Formalist Approach to a Short Story There are so many different things one can learn from reading a story. Stories vary in length but it seems that
your appetite for reading will gauge the kind of stories you elect to read. People who enjoy long thought out complex reading will enjoy much longer
published works than what a short story has to offer. However there is a large population in the world of people who do not want to spend days on
end reading a novel that is several hundred pages long and takes days to convey a simple message. In fact, many people want just the opposite in
their reading. Many readers want a story that is short, sweet, and to the point. Something that they don't need to spend hours or weeks on end
reading but instead can get the exact same message or meaning from instead of having to spend a ridiculous amount of time reading a much larger
work. Authors often want readers use the Formalist approach when reading these short stories as authors use words to convey the same message or
meaning in less text than a much longer published work with hundreds of pages, it does this by using the text itself as a canvas for creativity. The
Formalist approach is a great tool when it comes to writing short stories, and its use in Good Country People by Flannery O'Connor is classic example
of how the Formalist Approach can be so effective in such a short story. Authors are incredibly

How have the authors, Hunter and Dahl, created a sinister tone in their short stories you have studied?
Tone is of great significance to the storyline as it portrays the reader's attitude while expressing the genre. Tony Hunter's 'Listen to the End' and Roald
Dahl's 'The Landlady' both guide the audience through their violent and mysterious stories that begin with a powerless main character on a dark,
shivering evening. However, through varying and distinctive techniques, the two short stories differ notably in terms of setting, characterisation, and
point of view, which ultimately convey the menacing tone.
Both Hunter and Dahl use point of view and setting to form the sinister tone in their baleful narratives. Written in third...show more content...
Although he is naГЇve and is entirely oblivious to the Landlady's evil. He soon queries his surroundings by memory of strange events, "There is
nothing more tantalizing than thing like this that lingers just outside the borders of one's memory". Here, Dahl is motivating the readers to question
the Landlady. 'Listen to the End', Hunter did not name his main character and left the girl's life unidentified. Whereas Dahl has named his character
"Billy Weaver" and mentions more detail of his background and life story, which has the reader more empathy for the character.
Through various techniques featured in the texts 'Listen to the End' and 'The Landlady', Hunter and Dahl, have created two texts with similar themes,
but with varying execution of techniques. 'The Landlady' begins inconspicuously, with a young travelling man searching for a hotel. Like a true
ominous tale, it builds the tension slowly, through means of foreshadowing and symbolism. Through the usage of sentences from the Landlady, such
as, "I knew you would", Dahl enlightens the reader with the general sense of consciousness to danger. The technique of unusual illustrations engages
the active reader. Comparably, Hunter has built tension, starting early in the story with strong figurative language of gloom and misfortune. This
technique brings great imagery, which allowed the reader to picture easily, and feel close to the story. For example, "The

The Red Convertible Analysis
"The Red Convertible"
After reading the short story, "The Red Convertible", by Louise Erdrich, it is evident that the red convertible, in the story, is symbolic of the connection
between Henry and Lyman. Their connection was unique in the fact that they were not only brothers, but also connected through the purchase of the red
convertible, that they had bought together. While Lyman was away at war, Henry stated, "I wrote him back several times, even though I didn't know
if those letters would go through. I kept him informed all about the car" (pg. 3). This quote explains their connection as brothers. The car was almost
like a baby to them, as Henry shared with Lyman how he was taking such good care of it while he was away. Much like the stories

In "The Moment Before the Gun Went Off" by Nadine Gordimer, she tells us about the forbidden truths of a shallow, racist society in South Africa.
Apartheid is defined as racial segregation; specifically : a former policy of segregation and political and economic discrimination against non–European
groups in the Republic of South Africa. (Webster). This policy would help assure there were no inner–racial relationships besides those that were
professional, like the relationship portrayed in Marais Van der Vyver, the white European farmer, and his black farm laborer. The theme of "The
moment Before the Gun Went Off" is the idea of apartheid. This was an extreme policy that separated a country in two pieces and continues to leave its

I feel that this story portrays blacks as if they were slaves, but also that Gordimer was trying to build suspense by giving hints to that relationship.
When Marais describes his relationship with his black laborer he says, "He was my friend, I always took him hunting with me. Those city and
overseas people don't know it's true: farmers usually have one particular black boy they like to take along with them in the lands; you could call it a
kind of friend, yes, friends are not only your own white people, like yourself, whom you take into your house, pray with in church, and work with on
the Party committee." (Gordimer). This quote shows the rising action, although it comes early in the story it helps set the tone and give the reader
hints to that something more is going on. Marais shows an attitude of one who's more in touch with the blacks and although he has been a puppet to
the apartheid policy, this statement helps understand that Van de Vyver has a closer relationship to his black farm boy then he leads on. This causes
an inner conflict that becomes very real to Van de Vyver. He has to fight to keep his relationship with the black farm boy under wraps because of
society's policies and the animosity towards inner–racial relationships. This may not seem like a big deal, because during the story this boy is
portrayed as a farmhand and nothing more. At one point the author writes "В…often around the farm

Energy is one of the single most important concepts to keep in mind when writing, it can make even the most insignificant occurrences interesting.
Energy plays with the reader's senses combining subject matter, leaps/ spacing and words into one to create a fascinating piece of work. "Good
writers choose a topic they know a lot about–relationships, travel, growing up, bedrooms, hotels, restaurants, the synagogue on 42nd Street–and they

In an interview Rick Moody states that the third person is the mother of the boys, narrating the story in an "understated way, she is the perceiver, their
mother is the center piece of the story." (Rick Moody) Viewing the story from a higher place gives the reader a sense of intimacy with thenarrator

The different styles of writing and wording that Moody used throughout his piece created and maintained a continuous pace. This pace allows the
reader along with the narrator to become a part of the 'boys'" aging process. Lastly, his choice of topic adds to the energy of the story, he begins his

Short Story Of Short Stories
One thing that's great about short stories is how quickly they can ruin your life. Maybe you start reading one over your lunch break and, if it's the right
one, before that peanut butter cup you brought for dessert even has a chance to finish its melting shape–shift into some kind of sugary cement, the
whole world has been destroyed around you and then rebuilt, and nothing is quite the same again. This happens whether you like it or not. Great
stories practice this violent beauty on you in a variety of ways: some by making an absurd world familiar (or vice versa), some with a slow burn,
some with a voice that colonizes your thoughts. Some do it quietly, almost without you even noticing, and some do it with high wire acts of
imagination or intellect that make you into a breathless witness. The trick, then, is finding the right story, one that is capable of such a thing. This
is no easy task. Tastes differ, of course, and it can be confusing to spot the small boat of a great story on the wide sea of fiction. What any reader
can offer you in terms of guidance is actually the same thing that any good writer can offer you with the story itself: a way of saying, This is what
moved me and made me feel strange and alive in some way; here, why don't you give it a try? In that spirit and in no particular order, here are ten
short stories you might've missed that ambushed me with their odd wonder: 1."The Zero Meter Diving Team" by Jim Shepard (BOMB Magazine)

Unease. Thrilling. Surprise. These are simply three feelings thrown at the reader all happening in a one–page story. Short–short stories often have the
affect of making the reader feel uneasy. The reason behind this, is because the stories are so short the writer needs to jump directly into the story with
something interesting or alarming to grab the reader's attention. Often, the more uneasy the writing is, the more it leaves an effect on the reader.
Clearly, some stories are more uneasy than others. Sudden Fiction is a book filled with endless short stories within an average of three pages to a story.

Essay on Tell-tale Heart Literary Analysis
The Tell–Tale Heart
A Literary Analysis
Like many of Poe's other works, the Tell–Tale Heart is a dark story. This particular one focuses on the events leading the death of an old man, and the
events afterwards. That's the basics of it, but there are many deep meanings hidden in the three page short story. Poe uses techniques such as first person
narrative, irony and style to pull off a believable sense of paranoia. In this particular story, Poe decided to write it in the first person narrative. This
technique is used to get inside the main character's head and view his thoughts and are often exciting. The narrator in the Tell–Tale Heart is telling the
story on how he killed the old man while pleading his sanity. To quote a phrase...show more content...
Poe's economic style of writing is a key instrument in making this story amazing. In this story, he uses his style to truly bring out what he intended for
the story – a study of paranoia. In example, "I loved the old man. He had never wronged me. He had never given me insult. For his gold I had no
desire. I think it was his eye! Yes, it was this! One of his eyes resembled that of a vulture–– a pale blue eye with a film over it. Whenever it fell upon
me my blood ran cold, and so by degrees, very gradually, I made up my mind to take the life of the old man, and thus rid myself of the eye for ever. "
it is easy to see that Poe used short sentences, to capture the rapid thoughts of a twisted mind.
Perhaps the biggest element in this story is the use of irony, both verbally and dramatically. For verbal irony, we can see clearly at the end that what
the narrator tells the officers and how he acts on the outside, (in a "cool manner", as he puts it) is much different than the chaos on the inside, as in
what he wants to say. He sees the police as "villains" and wishes them to leave, but due to the situation, he had to keep them there. The more that he
assures himself of his sanity near the end of the story and the more that he thinks that he is acting coolly, eventually leads him to reveal that he is the
one that killed the old man after all. As for dramatic irony, since we know that the narrator is the one that killed the old man,

Analyses of Short Stories Nathaniel Hawthorne, "Young Goodman Brown"
Goodman Brown was not asleep in this short story. As I read, I believed that Goodman did indeed meet the devil in the forest. If he had indeed dreamt
about the trip he was sent on and meeting the devil, I think his nervousness would have been described in more detail then it was. Concentrating more
on the anxiety he was feeling would have led the reader to believe that the events were not real. I also saw this story as an allegory. I saw the allegory
after reading the story two times. I think it is centered on Goodman Brown having a bumpy past and that he wants to go beyond his past and reach
heaven. The characters names also show the religious allegory in the...show more content...
In "My Kinsman, Major Molineaux", Robin is given a lesson and isolated from the group of the new colony. He leads himself to his own misery and
disrespect because he recognized himself as a kinsman and wanted something back. Both Hawthorne and Robin face the problem of being accepted by
society. They both had their shares of complications and complexity fitting in with their surroundings.
The first paragraph of the story is there to let you know something. There is a hint hidden in the paragraph about the fate of Major Molineaux. He states
that uprisings are beginning to occur in the colonies.
Robin is an 18 year old who travels across the ocean to see Major Molineaux. He seems confident that all will work out even though he does not
know where his uncle lives. He goes with little money and asks where Major Molineaux lives. His first attempt to find his uncle is a
disappointment. All the people he asks are mean to him but he still keeps looking. From the story, I get that Robin does not really want to find
Major Molineaux. Once he sees his uncle tarred and feathered, he starts laughing and realizing how much he has grown from his trip. The older
people in the story seem to be really mean. I think they have a greater hatred toward Major Molineaux. The man Robin sees with the black and red
face scares him. I think the red and black represent danger and anger and possibly evil. The danger could represent either that the mob is supposed to

Why Do These Men Do the Things That They Do? Sonta Clouatre Course: English 102 Instructor: Ms. Amy Acosta Essay Type: Short Story
Analysis In a world labeled with "dos" and "don'ts," many people think society will accept anything morally wrong as long as society does not
know about the sin at face value. If people do not realize what is going on, how can they accept or reject it? Many also have a tendency to stereotype
people for what they see and not for what they do. Further, they may either ignore the truth or refuse to come to terms with the reality of a situation.
These sentiments are reflected in "No One's a Mystery" by Elizabeth Tallent and "Can–Can" by Arturo Vivante–both essays dealing with men having

It is obvious in both stories that the mistresses want to be the only ones on their lovers' minds when they are together. They want the ideas and truths
of wives and fidelity left at home so that all attention can be focused on them. In both stories, the husbands seem confident of their wives' actions and
responses. In "No One's a Mystery," the husband immediately knows his wife is driving behind them because he says, "She keeps the lights on in the
daytime" and also, "She's driving exactly fifty–five miles an hour" (Tallent 10). These observations may seem trivial or shallow on the surface, but
their mention symbolizes all that spouses learn and know about each other simply from being married for an extended period. In the story "Can–Can,"
the husband knows his wife will not question his going out for a drive. The author writes, "She wasn't the least bit inquisitive, though jealous she
was in silent, subtle ways" (Vivante 5). The husband's true reason for a "drive" is later revealed, when the author notes, "He wasn't simply going out
for a drive, as he said, but going to a cafe to meet Sarah, whom his wife knew but did not suspect, and with her go to a house on a lake his wife knew
nothing about–a summer cottage to which he had a key" (Vivante 6). The husband's confidence in his wife's ignorance is unquestioned. This

Short Story Analysis: A Secret Sorrow
After reading "A Secret Sorrow," I am left feeling disappointed with the story. I think that the story was well–written as far as structure goes, but I
absolutely despise the plot. Love stories with ridiculous plots, such as this one, have never been enjoyable to me, because I can never take
anything out of them. You could say that not all stories are meant for enjoyment, but there is not anything about this story to make up for that.
There was no lesson to be learned and nothing to think on after reading. Basically, I just feel like this was a pointless read, and I am annoyed that
this story had an assignment to go along with it. All I could think about the entire time I was reading is how ridiculous Kai and Faye's relationship
is. Maybe reading the entire book rather than just the excerpt we were given would give more insight into that. But from what I gather from what we

reasoning and says that she cannot have children and Kai wants to marry her regardless of that, Faye still says no. Kai pretty much has to convince her

have to convince her. That just screams to me that they have an unhealthy

Edgar Allan Poe Short Story Analysis
Edgar Allen Poe's Hidden and Repetitive Style
Edgar Allen Poe has a hidden and repetitive style through out most of his short stories. Most of his short stories are dark, or have an insane or
unstable narrative. Which causes a reader to question Edgar Allen Poe's own sanity. Though with the constant abuse of opium and alcohol there is no
wonder his short stories are written as they are, morbid with a dark sense of humor. This is shown through out his short stories, a few examples are
"Instinct Vs Reason – A black cat", "The Business Man", and "The Island of Fae", all written by Edgar Allen Poe show that he has a repetitive style,
humor, and tone even though all the stories written by Poe are completely different in content.
The short story "Instinct Vs Reason – A Black Cat" sets a tone of mockery, that humans believe they are superior because they see reason higher than
instinct and do not believe that animals can reason and only rely on instinct. This tone is common to see or notice within all of Edgar Allen Poe's
short stories "In recent years, critics have focused not on this dramatic use of humor hut on Poe's wit, on his satire and irony, on a Poe whose humor
requires an elaborate set of footnotes to be appreciated. While this approach has unearthed a number of overlooked references and "in" jokes, calling
attention to Poe's divided or elitist sense of his audience, it has done this at the expense of downplaying the broader, more universal, less intellectual
humor that screams out from the center of Poe's work." (Lewis, 531–532) Edgar Allen Poe gives an example of how his black cat can reason instead of
only relying on instinct like his peers seem to have believed. He shows this as "That portion of the kitchen which she most frequents is accessible only
by a door, which closes with what is termed a thumb–latch; these latches are rude in construction, and some force and dexterity are always requisite to
force them down. But puss is in the daily habit of opening the door, which she accomplished in the following way." (Poe, 344) Edgar Allen Poe
explains that his peers seem to believe that the human species no longer rely on instinct and have shielded themselves from using it as they thought the

Example Of Short Stories
The Short Endings Having read many short stories in the past helps you assume the endings of some stories, before reaching the end. Some endings
are surprising, which makes you want more, while others seem to be boring. Some endings don't satisfy the readers and keeps them hanging, or
guessing. Endings in stories are very important; they could make a book or break it. Two short stories that I have read recently where there is an
ending twist are, "After Twenty Years" and "A Sound of Thunder." Both stories include a surprise, but each surprise ending is different from the other.
Each of the short stories endings had a different impact to me as a reader. In the story of "After Twenty Years," the surprise twist comes near the
resolving of the conflict at the end. While reading the story from the start, you wouldn't assume the ending. The beginning of the story was a bit slow
for me. There wasn't an interesting dialogue to hook me in it. Though continuing reading, the ending was a surprise. It didn't leave you hanging, or

Short Story Analysis

  • 1. Short Story Analysis In the summer of 1978 In Nashville, Tennessee, the 80–year–old former Combat medic John Franklin was with his grandchildren. He was telling a story about how he broke his neck on a shallow lake in Ohio in 1912. As he jumped into the story he was explaining the theory of the butterfly effect with examples of if he moved his finger or flexed his muscle in a different way history would be different and possibly wouldn't have been with his two grandchildren on that day. He started off by saying that in that situation he was the 1 and 1,000 people that survive a broken neck. He said, "I recovered in no time and that is when I tried to strengthen my faith in God because on that night he was protecting me". He continued with the story and preached the lesson of how God always looks out for you and knows what is best. As he got back into the story he was interrupted by the kitchen timer, That was the reminder to read the bible verse of the day. As he started, Bill his youngest grandson interrupted him and asked "grandpa did you ever fight in world war 1" He paused and said no son I never fought in world war 1. He continued on and said "you know what boys I'm gonna tell you both a story that will fill the verses slot today. Billy this will answer your question. So, boys, I was a young boy barely 18 in 1916 and I was in a little bit of a conflict. I was compelled by the biggest decision of my life, should I get on that bus to enlist or stay home and become a missionary Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. Conflicts Conflict means a struggle or problem between two opposing groups or individuals. There are two types of conflict: internal and external conflict. An internal conflict is a struggle that is internalized and deals with choices, consequences, or emotions. An internal conflict is a man vs. self struggle. An external conflict is a struggle between the protagonist and another character against nature or some outside force. External conflicts are either man verses man, man verses nature, or man verses society. Various examples of internal and external conflicts can be shown in Guy de Maupassant's "The Necklace," Richard Connell's "The Most Dangerous Game," and O.Henry's, "The Gift of the Magi." Firstly, Guy de Maupassant's "The Necklace" shows ...show more content... He is put into a situation where he has to swim until he finds shelter. He swims, and "for a seemingly endless time he fought the sea" (Connell 42). After a while, he found an island called Ship Trap Island. So, this shows how he fought against nature. Another example of conflict in this story is when Rainsford has to fight against General Zaroff, who is an expert at hunting humans on Ship Trap Island. As Rainsford gets challenged by Zaroff, he says, "'Thank you, I'm a hunter, not a murderer'" (49). This shows an example of another external conflict. But, this one is a man verses man conflict because Rainsford is facing a problem with another character in the story. Therefore, Rainsford faces many situations where he has to choose between life or death. Lastly, examples of conflict can be shown in "The Gift of the Magi" by O.Henry. This story is about a cute couple that is willing to do anything to buy each other Christmas presents. An internal conflict faced by Della Young, the protagonist, is when she does not have enough money to buy her husband Jim a present. All Della had was "one dollar and eighty seven cents. And the next day would be Christmas" (O. Henry 153). To get more money, Della sells her most prized possession, which is her hair. After Della and Jim finally bought their presents by selling their most prized possessions, another conflict arose. Della bought Jim a chain for his watch, and Jim bought Della hair combs that she Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 3. Short Story Elements Analysis Garcia Marquez combines fantastical elements with realistic issues to create a fascinating story that is worth of reading. While angel is used in advancing the theme of realism, bird mad represents individuals who focus on fantasy and deny what reality has to offer. Garcia manages to use detailed sensory imagery to enhance the vividness of the story. The audience can actually "see" the old man, "feel" him, and even "smell" him. Garcia's use of imagery also contradicts the reader's traditional perception of angels. In addition to that, worthy of mentioning is the way Garcia describes the young man. The "Bird man" is highlighted as a man of extreme weakness. Garcia makes the short story interesting to read by mixing different kinds of imagery. Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 4. Examples Of Conflict In Short Stories TMA EL121 The short story and Essay writing Short stories are mainly written to grab the reader's attention and thus make them reflect and become drawn into the story even more. So why is a short story important? They are important and effective due to the fact that any reader can relate to the story or a particular character as they can be universal. In this TMA I will be tracing the elements of conflicts within the three short stories. These conflicts will consist of man vs man, man vs society and man vs nature. Furthermore, I will talk about the internal and external conflicts in the stories in the following paragraphs. After meeting a man at the appointed place, Jimmy realises that it is in fact his friend Bob. However, he does not reveal himself to him as he learns that his' friend' is a wanted thief in Chicago, this can be supported by the image of Bob as he is said to be dressed well and wearing 'large diamonds' on his scarf. Jimmy leaves bob and sends another police officer in normal clothing pretending to be his friend, he knows as a police officer he is supposed to arrest him but he just couldn't do that to his long lost friend hence why he sends another man. Although, Bob senses that the sent man does not look like Jimmy, he continuous in engaging in the conversation with him. The short story unfolds with Bob being arrested by the man and at the same time being handed over a note. It states in the note that Bob in fact did meet his friend (Jimmy) the police officer, that met up with him and he goes on by explaining that he recognised Bob's face to be a wanted man from Chicago. • 5. A Formalist Approach On A Short Story LATE PASS Michael Wraa Professor Joyce Heyman English 110 15 February 2015 A Formalist Approach to a Short Story There are so many different things one can learn from reading a story. Stories vary in length but it seems that your appetite for reading will gauge the kind of stories you elect to read. People who enjoy long thought out complex reading will enjoy much longer published works than what a short story has to offer. However there is a large population in the world of people who do not want to spend days on end reading a novel that is several hundred pages long and takes days to convey a simple message. In fact, many people want just the opposite in their reading. Many readers want a story that is short, sweet, and to the point. Something that they don't need to spend hours or weeks on end reading but instead can get the exact same message or meaning from instead of having to spend a ridiculous amount of time reading a much larger work. Authors often want readers use the Formalist approach when reading these short stories as authors use words to convey the same message or meaning in less text than a much longer published work with hundreds of pages, it does this by using the text itself as a canvas for creativity. The Formalist approach is a great tool when it comes to writing short stories, and its use in Good Country People by Flannery O'Connor is classic example of how the Formalist Approach can be so effective in such a short story. Authors are incredibly Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 6. Text Analysis How have the authors, Hunter and Dahl, created a sinister tone in their short stories you have studied? Tone is of great significance to the storyline as it portrays the reader's attitude while expressing the genre. Tony Hunter's 'Listen to the End' and Roald Dahl's 'The Landlady' both guide the audience through their violent and mysterious stories that begin with a powerless main character on a dark, shivering evening. However, through varying and distinctive techniques, the two short stories differ notably in terms of setting, characterisation, and point of view, which ultimately convey the menacing tone. Both Hunter and Dahl use point of view and setting to form the sinister tone in their baleful narratives. Written in third...show more content... Although he is naГЇve and is entirely oblivious to the Landlady's evil. He soon queries his surroundings by memory of strange events, "There is nothing more tantalizing than thing like this that lingers just outside the borders of one's memory". Here, Dahl is motivating the readers to question the Landlady. 'Listen to the End', Hunter did not name his main character and left the girl's life unidentified. Whereas Dahl has named his character "Billy Weaver" and mentions more detail of his background and life story, which has the reader more empathy for the character. Through various techniques featured in the texts 'Listen to the End' and 'The Landlady', Hunter and Dahl, have created two texts with similar themes, but with varying execution of techniques. 'The Landlady' begins inconspicuously, with a young travelling man searching for a hotel. Like a true ominous tale, it builds the tension slowly, through means of foreshadowing and symbolism. Through the usage of sentences from the Landlady, such as, "I knew you would", Dahl enlightens the reader with the general sense of consciousness to danger. The technique of unusual illustrations engages the active reader. Comparably, Hunter has built tension, starting early in the story with strong figurative language of gloom and misfortune. This technique brings great imagery, which allowed the reader to picture easily, and feel close to the story. For example, "The Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 7. The Red Convertible Analysis "The Red Convertible" After reading the short story, "The Red Convertible", by Louise Erdrich, it is evident that the red convertible, in the story, is symbolic of the connection between Henry and Lyman. Their connection was unique in the fact that they were not only brothers, but also connected through the purchase of the red convertible, that they had bought together. While Lyman was away at war, Henry stated, "I wrote him back several times, even though I didn't know if those letters would go through. I kept him informed all about the car" (pg. 3). This quote explains their connection as brothers. The car was almost like a baby to them, as Henry shared with Lyman how he was taking such good care of it while he was away. • 8. Short Story Plot Analysis Essay In "The Moment Before the Gun Went Off" by Nadine Gordimer, she tells us about the forbidden truths of a shallow, racist society in South Africa. Apartheid is defined as racial segregation; specifically : a former policy of segregation and political and economic discrimination against non–European groups in the Republic of South Africa. (Webster). This policy would help assure there were no inner–racial relationships besides those that were professional, like the relationship portrayed in Marais Van der Vyver, the white European farmer, and his black farm laborer. The theme of "The moment Before the Gun Went Off" is the idea of apartheid. This was an extreme policy that separated a country in two pieces and continues to leave its ...show more content... I feel that this story portrays blacks as if they were slaves, but also that Gordimer was trying to build suspense by giving hints to that relationship. When Marais describes his relationship with his black laborer he says, "He was my friend, I always took him hunting with me. Those city and overseas people don't know it's true: farmers usually have one particular black boy they like to take along with them in the lands; you could call it a kind of friend, yes, friends are not only your own white people, like yourself, whom you take into your house, pray with in church, and work with on the Party committee." (Gordimer). This quote shows the rising action, although it comes early in the story it helps set the tone and give the reader hints to that something more is going on. Marais shows an attitude of one who's more in touch with the blacks and although he has been a puppet to the apartheid policy, this statement helps understand that Van de Vyver has a closer relationship to his black farm boy then he leads on. This causes an inner conflict that becomes very real to Van de Vyver. He has to fight to keep his relationship with the black farm boy under wraps because of society's policies and the animosity towards inner–racial relationships. This may not seem like a big deal, because during the story this boy is portrayed as a farmhand and nothing more. At one point the author writes "В…often around the farm Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 9. Essay about Boys: Short Story Analysis "Boys" By: Rick Moody Rebeca Montesinos February 10, 2011 Micheline Maylor English 1118 Energy is one of the single most important concepts to keep in mind when writing, it can make even the most insignificant occurrences interesting. Energy plays with the reader's senses combining subject matter, leaps/ spacing and words into one to create a fascinating piece of work. "Good writers choose a topic they know a lot about–relationships, travel, growing up, bedrooms, hotels, restaurants, the synagogue on 42nd Street–and they trust that they will discover things about the topic as they work." "Boys" is introduced to us in third person offering us a long distances shot of the progress as the boys age. In an interview Rick Moody states that the third person is the mother of the boys, narrating the story in an "understated way, she is the perceiver, their mother is the center piece of the story." (Rick Moody) Viewing the story from a higher place gives the reader a sense of intimacy with thenarrator being able to perceive the lives of the characters the "boys" in a different light, the reader becomes a witness to the events in the progression of the "boys'" lives. The different styles of writing and wording that Moody used throughout his piece created and maintained a continuous pace. This pace allows the reader along with the narrator to become a part of the 'boys'" aging process. Lastly, his choice of topic adds to the energy of the story, he begins his piece inspired by someone else's, creates a variation of sentences based on the phrase "the boys entered the house" and then writes what he knows and incorporates personal aspects of Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 10. Short Story Of Short Stories One thing that's great about short stories is how quickly they can ruin your life. Maybe you start reading one over your lunch break and, if it's the right one, before that peanut butter cup you brought for dessert even has a chance to finish its melting shape–shift into some kind of sugary cement, the whole world has been destroyed around you and then rebuilt, and nothing is quite the same again. This happens whether you like it or not. Great stories practice this violent beauty on you in a variety of ways: some by making an absurd world familiar (or vice versa), some with a slow burn, some with a voice that colonizes your thoughts. Some do it quietly, almost without you even noticing, and some do it with high wire acts of imagination or intellect that make you into a breathless witness. The trick, then, is finding the right story, one that is capable of such a thing. This is no easy task. Tastes differ, of course, and it can be confusing to spot the small boat of a great story on the wide sea of fiction. What any reader can offer you in terms of guidance is actually the same thing that any good writer can offer you with the story itself: a way of saying, This is what moved me and made me feel strange and alive in some way; here, why don't you give it a try? In that spirit and in no particular order, here are ten short stories you might've missed that ambushed me with their odd wonder: 1."The Zero Meter Diving Team" by Jim Shepard (BOMB Magazine) This curious, Get more content on HelpWriting.net

  • 12. Short Story Analysis Unease. Thrilling. Surprise. These are simply three feelings thrown at the reader all happening in a one–page story. Short–short stories often have the affect of making the reader feel uneasy. The reason behind this, is because the stories are so short the writer needs to jump directly into the story with something interesting or alarming to grab the reader's attention. Often, the more uneasy the writing is, the more it leaves an effect on the reader. Clearly, some stories are more uneasy than others. Sudden Fiction is a book filled with endless short stories within an average of three pages to a story. Not only does the content lead the reader to become uneasy, but so do the title. After that, her brother stops by and tells her he has heard about the accident with the family and all he asks was, "What were you going to see". He shows no emotion about what had happened or how this woman, his sister, is feeling. After they talk about the accident, the women looked out the window and realizes two people are stealing a car in her driveway, and she just hopes they don't hit her mailbox. Lastly, the story ends with her sitting at the table stirring her coffee, worried that the Cremona will not dissolve into her coffee. Throughout this whole story this woman is being bombarded with some of the most awful things, and she acts as though there is nothing wrong. Not only has her whole family died, but then Timmy gets kidnapped, she gets raped, and her brother's car gets stolen before her own eyes. Throughout this whole morning she does nothing but try to read the paper and stir her coffee. The reader truly sees how emotionally unstable this woman is throughout the story. There are several events happening to her and she could so something about them, but she does not. The most uneasy factor of this short story is the fact that it is perfectly one–page long. • 13. Essay on Tell-tale Heart Literary Analysis The Tell–Tale Heart A Literary Analysis Like many of Poe's other works, the Tell–Tale Heart is a dark story. This particular one focuses on the events leading the death of an old man, and the events afterwards. That's the basics of it, but there are many deep meanings hidden in the three page short story. Poe uses techniques such as first person narrative, irony and style to pull off a believable sense of paranoia. In this particular story, Poe decided to write it in the first person narrative. This technique is used to get inside the main character's head and view his thoughts and are often exciting. The narrator in the Tell–Tale Heart is telling the story on how he killed the old man while pleading his sanity. To quote a phrase...show more content... Poe's economic style of writing is a key instrument in making this story amazing. In this story, he uses his style to truly bring out what he intended for the story – a study of paranoia. In example, "I loved the old man. He had never wronged me. He had never given me insult. For his gold I had no desire. I think it was his eye! Yes, it was this! One of his eyes resembled that of a vulture–– a pale blue eye with a film over it. Whenever it fell upon me my blood ran cold, and so by degrees, very gradually, I made up my mind to take the life of the old man, and thus rid myself of the eye for ever. " it is easy to see that Poe used short sentences, to capture the rapid thoughts of a twisted mind. Perhaps the biggest element in this story is the use of irony, both verbally and dramatically. For verbal irony, we can see clearly at the end that what the narrator tells the officers and how he acts on the outside, (in a "cool manner", as he puts it) is much different than the chaos on the inside, as in what he wants to say. He sees the police as "villains" and wishes them to leave, but due to the situation, he had to keep them there. The more that he assures himself of his sanity near the end of the story and the more that he thinks that he is acting coolly, eventually leads him to reveal that he is the one that killed the old man after all. As for dramatic irony, since we know that the narrator is the one that killed the old man, Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 14. Analyses of Short Stories Essay examples Analyses of Short Stories Nathaniel Hawthorne, "Young Goodman Brown" Goodman Brown was not asleep in this short story. As I read, I believed that Goodman did indeed meet the devil in the forest. If he had indeed dreamt about the trip he was sent on and meeting the devil, I think his nervousness would have been described in more detail then it was. Concentrating more on the anxiety he was feeling would have led the reader to believe that the events were not real. I also saw this story as an allegory. I saw the allegory after reading the story two times. I think it is centered on Goodman Brown having a bumpy past and that he wants to go beyond his past and reach heaven. The characters names also show the religious allegory in the...show more content... In "My Kinsman, Major Molineaux", Robin is given a lesson and isolated from the group of the new colony. He leads himself to his own misery and disrespect because he recognized himself as a kinsman and wanted something back. Both Hawthorne and Robin face the problem of being accepted by society. They both had their shares of complications and complexity fitting in with their surroundings. The first paragraph of the story is there to let you know something. There is a hint hidden in the paragraph about the fate of Major Molineaux. He states that uprisings are beginning to occur in the colonies. Robin is an 18 year old who travels across the ocean to see Major Molineaux. He seems confident that all will work out even though he does not know where his uncle lives. He goes with little money and asks where Major Molineaux lives. His first attempt to find his uncle is a disappointment. All the people he asks are mean to him but he still keeps looking. From the story, I get that Robin does not really want to find Major Molineaux. Once he sees his uncle tarred and feathered, he starts laughing and realizing how much he has grown from his trip. The older people in the story seem to be really mean. I think they have a greater hatred toward Major Molineaux. The man Robin sees with the black and red face scares him. I think the red and black represent danger and anger and possibly evil. The danger could represent either that the mob is supposed to Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 15. Short Story Analysiss Why Do These Men Do the Things That They Do? Sonta Clouatre Course: English 102 Instructor: Ms. Amy Acosta Essay Type: Short Story Analysis In a world labeled with "dos" and "don'ts," many people think society will accept anything morally wrong as long as society does not know about the sin at face value. If people do not realize what is going on, how can they accept or reject it? Many also have a tendency to stereotype people for what they see and not for what they do. Further, they may either ignore the truth or refuse to come to terms with the reality of a situation. These sentiments are reflected in "No One's a Mystery" by Elizabeth Tallent and "Can–Can" by Arturo Vivante–both essays dealing with men having affairs. The...show more content... It is obvious in both stories that the mistresses want to be the only ones on their lovers' minds when they are together. They want the ideas and truths of wives and fidelity left at home so that all attention can be focused on them. In both stories, the husbands seem confident of their wives' actions and responses. In "No One's a Mystery," the husband immediately knows his wife is driving behind them because he says, "She keeps the lights on in the daytime" and also, "She's driving exactly fifty–five miles an hour" (Tallent 10). These observations may seem trivial or shallow on the surface, but their mention symbolizes all that spouses learn and know about each other simply from being married for an extended period. In the story "Can–Can," the husband knows his wife will not question his going out for a drive. The author writes, "She wasn't the least bit inquisitive, though jealous she was in silent, subtle ways" (Vivante 5). The husband's true reason for a "drive" is later revealed, when the author notes, "He wasn't simply going out for a drive, as he said, but going to a cafe to meet Sarah, whom his wife knew but did not suspect, and with her go to a house on a lake his wife knew nothing about–a summer cottage to which he had a key" (Vivante 6). The husband's confidence in his wife's ignorance is unquestioned. This Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 16. Short Story Analysis: A Secret Sorrow After reading "A Secret Sorrow," I am left feeling disappointed with the story. I think that the story was well–written as far as structure goes, but I absolutely despise the plot. Love stories with ridiculous plots, such as this one, have never been enjoyable to me, because I can never take anything out of them. You could say that not all stories are meant for enjoyment, but there is not anything about this story to make up for that. There was no lesson to be learned and nothing to think on after reading. Basically, I just feel like this was a pointless read, and I am annoyed that this story had an assignment to go along with it. All I could think about the entire time I was reading is how ridiculous Kai and Faye's relationship is. Maybe reading the entire book rather than just the excerpt we were given would give more insight into that. But from what I gather from what we are given, I just do not get why they are even together. Relationships are built on trust, and quite obviously none of that is there if Faye can keep something as important as not being able to have children from Kai. You could argue and say that she did not lie to him about it,...show more content... Why would you not give a reason when saying no to a proposal? Why would you not give the man that you are supposedly in love with a reason as to why you will not marry him? That makes no sense to me whatsoever, even given Faye's circumstances. Then after Faye comes clean with her reasoning and says that she cannot have children and Kai wants to marry her regardless of that, Faye still says no. Kai pretty much has to convince her that he loves her, wants her, and that it is okay she cannot have children. If they are really in love she would already know those things, he should not have to convince her. That just screams to me that they have an unhealthy Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 17. Edgar Allan Poe Short Story Analysis Edgar Allen Poe's Hidden and Repetitive Style Edgar Allen Poe has a hidden and repetitive style through out most of his short stories. Most of his short stories are dark, or have an insane or unstable narrative. Which causes a reader to question Edgar Allen Poe's own sanity. Though with the constant abuse of opium and alcohol there is no wonder his short stories are written as they are, morbid with a dark sense of humor. This is shown through out his short stories, a few examples are "Instinct Vs Reason – A black cat", "The Business Man", and "The Island of Fae", all written by Edgar Allen Poe show that he has a repetitive style, humor, and tone even though all the stories written by Poe are completely different in content. The short story "Instinct Vs Reason – A Black Cat" sets a tone of mockery, that humans believe they are superior because they see reason higher than instinct and do not believe that animals can reason and only rely on instinct. This tone is common to see or notice within all of Edgar Allen Poe's short stories "In recent years, critics have focused not on this dramatic use of humor hut on Poe's wit, on his satire and irony, on a Poe whose humor requires an elaborate set of footnotes to be appreciated. While this approach has unearthed a number of overlooked references and "in" jokes, calling attention to Poe's divided or elitist sense of his audience, it has done this at the expense of downplaying the broader, more universal, less intellectual humor that screams out from the center of Poe's work." (Lewis, 531–532) Edgar Allen Poe gives an example of how his black cat can reason instead of only relying on instinct like his peers seem to have believed. He shows this as "That portion of the kitchen which she most frequents is accessible only by a door, which closes with what is termed a thumb–latch; these latches are rude in construction, and some force and dexterity are always requisite to force them down. But puss is in the daily habit of opening the door, which she accomplished in the following way." (Poe, 344) Edgar Allen Poe explains that his peers seem to believe that the human species no longer rely on instinct and have shielded themselves from using it as they thought the lowly Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 18. Example Of Short Stories The Short Endings Having read many short stories in the past helps you assume the endings of some stories, before reaching the end. Some endings are surprising, which makes you want more, while others seem to be boring. Some endings don't satisfy the readers and keeps them hanging, or guessing. Endings in stories are very important; they could make a book or break it. Two short stories that I have read recently where there is an ending twist are, "After Twenty Years" and "A Sound of Thunder." Both stories include a surprise, but each surprise ending is different from the other. Each of the short stories endings had a different impact to me as a reader. In the story of "After Twenty Years," the surprise twist comes near the resolving of the conflict at the end. While reading the story from the start, you wouldn't assume the ending. The beginning of the story was a bit slow for me. There wasn't an interesting dialogue to hook me in it. Though continuing reading, the ending was a surprise. It didn't leave you hanging, or wanting more out of the writer. There...show more content... One story, "After Twenty Years," started out slow, then had a surprise twist, where the reader finds out that the cop was the criminal's friend, and finished off with a solution. The story had a rise to it. The author provided me with answers at the end. On the other hand, the other story, "The Sound of Thunder," started interesting, where the author tells you that a group of friends went off on a time travel machine and there was some tension. You could feel the rise of the conflict from the start of the story. Closer to the end of the story the conflict seems to just rise even more and just suddenly stop, with a gunshot. There was no closure. The author did not end the story well. The ending was not right. It just left me as a reader confused, and asking more questions, rather than providing me with answers, especially that the opening was Get more content on HelpWriting.net
