2. BA (honours) Graphic Design Bath Academy of Art, England.
Emphasis in Visual Communication.
I am a classically trained art director with over 20 years of experience in
advertising. I began my career in Johannesburg, South Africa, and have had the
privilege of working at some of the country’s most prestigious agencies, such as
O&M, JWT, and Saatchi & Saatchi. In 1998, I transferred to Saatchi & Saatchi
Canada, and eventually settled in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
Over the course of my career I have helped build brands for such blue chip clients as
British Airways, Toyota, Procter & Gamble, the Canadian Pulp and Paper Association,
Coca Cola, McDonald’s, Alexander Keith’s, and PEI Tourism; I’ve worked at some
of the most prestigious agencies in Canada; and I’ve won numerous awards (see list
below).
Since 2007 I have been working as a freelance art director.
As a senior art director, I am comfortable working either as part of a creative team
or by myself to develop concepts on deadline and on budget that fulfil the brief, are
relevant to the target market, and deliver results.
I am experienced in overseeing junior teams and supervising agency
production artists, web designers, and graphic designers to ensure that the
team maintains a consistent, cohesive brand message to the highest conceptual and
strategic standard in TV, print, outdoor, electronic, and guerrilla advertising. I also
oversee photographers and TV production companies.
My experience as a freelance art director has given me the added advantage of
being able to carry a project through from concept development to final material
by myself.
My production skills include using Illustrator, InDesign, and Photoshop.
Clients rely on me to build or modify their ads, annual reports, outdoor campaigns,
and other collateral, knowing that I will respond rapidly and accurately to their
requests. It’s not unheard of me to get a brief from a client, build an ad, and supply
final material within a 12-hour period.
