2. Graphics files store an image and are
divided into two basic types:
>raster-based
>vector based files

3. RASTER-BASED FILES
→Stores the image as a collection
of pixels
→Cannot be scaled without
distortion

4. Common types of raster-based file formats
→ Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG) – it supports wide range of colors
that makes it most popularly used on camera and scanners. This type is
commonly used in the Internet and photo sharing. Though, some details can
be affected when producing a smaller file size.
→ Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG2000) – it is an evolving format of the
JPEG developed with multiple compression techniques based on wavelet
technology.
→ Tagged Image File Format (TIFF) – it is the often format choice for high-quality
master image because its quality is as perfect as the original. File size can be
huge. It is commonly used when sending image to be included on printed
books, brochures, or magazines.

software programs and offer a high degree of durability
→ Shapefiles (SHP) – uses vector coordinates to store non-topological
geometry and attribute information for features.

programs

9. Common types of text files formats
→ Proprietary formats (Microsoft Word Files) – carry the extension of the
software in which they created
→ Rich Text Format (RTF) – supported by variety of applications and saved
with formatting instructions
→ Portable Document Format (PDF) – contains an image of the page,
including text and graphics. It is widely used for read-only file sharing.
Adobe Acrobat is the most common popular PDF file application.

10. VIDEO AND AUDIO FILES
→ Contains moving images and sound
data
→They are created and viewed in
proprietary software programs and
stored proprietary formats.

11. Common file formats
→ QuickTime (.MOV)
→ Windows Media Video (.WMV)
→ Motion Picture Experts Group (.MPEG)(MP3)
→ Others such as .AVI and .WAV files
