1. Student athletes, many of whom
are beginning their first years of
college, come from all around the
world to join the numerous sports
teams that Hampton University has
to offer. The freshman, Ogre Phi
Ogre 16 class of student athletes
have taken the next step in their
athletic careers, and with that step
there are many changes.
Balancing class schedules, a
faster-tempo game and the pressure
of being the “rookies” once again
are just a few adjustments one makes
as a freshman athlete. Going from
being “big man on campus” at your
high school to just another number
is a major transition. As a freshman,
you have two options: either work
hard to become the best player at
your position or get distracted and
become just another number.
Mallory Beard is a setter and
defensive specialist from Chino
Hills, Calif. As a freshman, Beard has
earned a starting spot on the Lady
Pirates volleyball team.
“I feel very privileged to be
in games and [to] be trusted to
contribute,’ Beard said when ask how
she felt about receiving playing time
as a frehman.
She also mentioned her
transition from high school to college
athletics has been very progressive
and rewarding. Her coaches gave her
the idea and encouragement to take
her talents to the collegiate level. In
the next four years, the California
native sees herself being highly
proficient in passing, defense and
leading with proper communication
in the back row.
Out of all the fall sports at
Hampton, football seems to be
the most prominent on campus.
As a freshmen starter, adapting is
one of the most important keys to
success on the collegiate level. Chaka
Diarrassouba, a defensive back from
Atlanta, certainly believes in the need
for adaption as freshman starter.
He mentioned that his transition to
becoming a college athlete went well
and that his coaches made sure his
schedule was balanced. During his
interview, he stated that he didn’t
think he would be starting and that
he’s also glad coach Connell Maynor
along with the rest of the team trusts
him in the game.
While getting a better insight
of all the new freshmen players,
sat down with linebackers Hayden
Gregory of Nashville, Tenn. and
Kieto Jordon of Columbia, S.C, and
defensive lineman Owen Obasuyi of
Virginia Beach, VA to talk to them
about their adjustment to collegiate
football.
The young men are very family-
and friend-oriented, stating that
all of their inspiration came from
either a relative or family friend who
inspired them to play football. Not
only did they speak about the game
and the discipline required of them,
but they were sure to mention that
Coach Maynor was the reason that
each one of them decided to play for
Hampton University.
There are three key factors to
having a successful freshman year:
get better, work harder and look
forward to every game like it’s your
last!

On Saturday, Sept. 27 at 6 p.m,
Hampton University will face
off against South Carolina State
University (SCSU) at Armstrong
Stadium. The Pirates are coming off
of their first victory of the season
against Miles College, 34-30. The
SCSU Bulldogs have also picked up
another win against Coastal Carolina
University, 17-7.
Over the last four games
Hampton University has utilized a
mixture of a run and pass game plan,
utilizing senior runningback Jorrian
Washington from Los Angeles, and
junior wide receiver Rayshad Riddick
of Portsmouth, Va. Washington
has accumulated 198 rushing yards
and one rushing touchdown along
with 238 receiving yards and two
receiving touchdowns. Riddick was
equally successful in receiving yards
as Washington with 238 yards of
his own. Both players have been
consistent contributors to the Pirates
offense along with a list of other
players.
In Hampton’s close win over
the Golden Bears, sophomore
quarterback Bryan Bailey put on a
great performance, accumulating
a career-high 267 yards and three
touchdowns, earning the accolade
of “HU Athlete of the Week.” If
Bailey can bring that same level
of performance this weekend, the
Pirates should be able to establish
their passing attack early and often.
In SCSU’s game this past Saturday
against the Furman Paladins, the
Bulldogs utilized a run-heavy game
plan that ultimately led to a victory.
Junior RB Jalen “Scoot” Simmons
of Charlotte, N.C, was a leader on
offense, gaining 138 yards and a
touchdown.
Simmons has been a consistent
go-to player for the Bulldogs this
season, accumulating a total of 315
yards and three touchdowns in just
four games. He has proven thus far
that he is a “workhorse” player for
the Bulldogs and that he is capable
of getting those much-needed
rushing yards for his team. The
Pirates defense should be prepared to
see “Scoot” running the ball a lot this
Saturday and plan accordingly
Along with their running game,
the Bulldogs have two quarterbacks
that have led the passing game for
the team. Redshirt senior TeDarrius
Wiley and redshirt sophomore
Adrian Kollock Jr. have made up of
all of SCSU’s passing statistics (499
yards and 1 TD).
Kollock Jr. has shown that he can
be a threat to opponents, accounting
for the majority of the passing
yardage (399 yards) for the Bulldogs.
While he did not play against the
Paladins this past weekend, if he
gets on the field against Pirates on
Saturday he should not be taken
lightly. Saturday’s game will be
Hampton and South Carolina State’s
first conference game of the season,
which should make for an intense
match-up. The game will also be on
Hampton’s Parents’ Weekend, which
should add some extra motivation
for the Pirates. This is a game that
you do not want to miss.
