KUNSTSTOF TRAY Heineken
CP
DC
concepten

51. MEDELLIN – Beginning with
its colonial roots, Medellin was
always a city of contrasts.
It is wedged, for instance,
into the Aburrá valley between
two branches of the Andean
mountain range, in a landscape
that looks like folded green
velvet from the air, but up close
reveals rugged hillsides covered
with homes.
The city always has been an
industrial center, which, com-
bined with the contributions
of a landed gentry, created
a buoyant economy in spite
of persistent social dispari-
ties. But now investment in
art and culture and visionary
civic projects in marginalized
neighborhoods are helping
reshape the city into a modern
leisure destination. Gone are
the city’s more notorious days.
The new face of Medellin is
tied to culture, from famous
son Fernando Botero – the
world-renowned artist – to
singing sensation Juanes.
Through all of its triumphs
and travails, Medellin has
held on to its distinctive
paisa (as the people from the
Department of Antioquia are
called) cultural identity – often
described as the most “can do”
attitude in Colombia.
Visitors now encounter
shopping malls filled with con-
sumers, an airport brimming
with business travelers and
tourists, and streets throbbing
with nightlife in a place that
labels itself the city of eternal
spring, with an average tem-
perature of 78 degrees.
“Unstoppable Medellin
– the transformation contin-
ues,” reads an ad from the
mayor’s office that is appear-
ing in Cambio, a leading local
magazine.
