1. Summary of roundtable dialogue workshop discussion
SIANI annual meeting 2023
More than 50 participants took part in the SIANI Annual meeting 2023, which focused on current
crisis in the food system and introduced SIANI’s new vision around sustainable, inclusive and rights-
based food systems.
All participants at the meeting were invited to take part in round table discussions to share their
own thoughts and insights. Each group also selected their top 3 important and impactful ideas, and
their top 3 innovative ideas from their discussion. The discussions were revolved around the
question:
What role can the SIANI network play in transformation of food systems in
times of crises and how can your organisation contribute?
The participants came up with many great ideas, stressing the network role of facilitating dialogue,
bringing people together and enabling collaboration. The role of the network can also be to work
effectively with communication in order to raise topics that are not heard elsewhere – the diversity
of the network in terms of sectors and collaborations around the world is an important asset in this
attempt. A mapping of members’ expertise, living labs, a bottom-up approach and pilot
multistakeholder projects were some of the concrete ideas the participants put forward. Through
such activities, SIANI should try to be bold and impactful. The examples below summarise the ideas
put forward by the participants.
2. Most impactful and important ideas. The network can contribute to…
• Facilitating dialogues both online and on site with actors from across food systems to form
collaborations between different sectors and areas of work.
• Effectively communicating and amplifying evidence-based knowledge from marginalized
perspectives, ignored topics and sensitive issues, and providing examples and lessons
learned on how to act.
• Providing a platform for intersectional networking, thereby breaking silos and encourage
interdisciplinary cooperation to tackle wicked problems of food security and hunger.
• Mobilising funding streams and new sources of funding by inviting funders to share
perspectives on current and relevant topics.
• Being bold and impacting the big questions.
Most innovative ideas. The network can contribute to…
• Mapping experiences and expertise of SIANI members to enable cooperation and
understanding of each other’s roles and expand to members’ own networks.
• Exploring new topics and contributing to the knowledge frontier in for example the nexus
between water, agriculture and food, as well as conflict and food systems.
• Piloting multistakeholder projects for action and assembling different actors and
perspectives important to break silos.
• Highlighting successful examples of food systems transformation and compiling lessons
learnt and good practices of crisis adaptation.
3. • Adopting a bottom-up approach and empowering people to share their perspectives in the
network.
• Communicating around funding opportunities.
• Supporting living labs to tackle key wicked problems in collaboration between actors.
Mission statements
Other than proposing their many inspiring ideas, all groups formulated a Mission Statement
reflecting the discussion during the workshop:
We will continue to be a platform for building knowledge and sharing through dialogues, informing
policy and public debate for innovative and sustainable transformation of food systems.
We will increase cross-sector engagement to explore new solutions (funding, knowledge etc.) from a
bottom-up approach.
We will continue the role in bridging actors, building and spreading knowledge AND bringing new
perspectives.
