PHILIPPINE
POPULAR
CULTURE
2. In the Pre-colonial era, the earliest native men wore waist length
collarless doublet shirts made of rough cotton. Their loins were
covered with a pane designed to hang between the legs and mid thigh.
The women wore sleeved dresses that were appropriately short. The
women also wore a pane that attached from the waist reaching to their
feet that was accented with a colorful belt. To top of their fashion
sense, the men and women wore accessories and jewellery that
beautified their bodies.

4. During the American regime, Filipino
men were introduced to the
"Americana," westernized suits and
jackets. Women wore "terno" dresses
with butterfly styled short sleeves and
"panuelo," a Filipino national dress.
The different ways to how the men and
women dressed is a symbol of the
power struggle between the Americans
and Filipinos.
5. The 21st century has brought many
changes to the Philippine fashion.
From sleeveless blouses to mini
shorts, there are many variations to
how the styles today are used. The

sale process. Second, how it enters the market is unique.
There are various reasons consumers still buy these goods.
One is their low prices when compared to substitute and
complementary goods. Ukay-ukay nowadays is a very
affordable source of fashionable yet durable clothing material
for those with relatively low incomes. Some people would
resort to buying ukay-ukay items because the latter are
8. Ukay-ukay” is said to be derived from the Filipino word “hukay” or
“halukay,” which means “to dig.” Unlike how the clothes are placed on
racks, older thrift shops sold goods in piles called “wagwagan” where
customers had to actually dig through these piles to locate anything
they liked.
Cities such as Baguio, Manila, and even Cebu pioneered the practice of
thrift shopping. Most prominent is Baguio City’s Night Market which has
a broad range of new and secondhand products to fit any budget
Another ukay gem that can be found in Metro Manila is this mall in
Anonas. The building, Lolo Oboys Commercial Center, in Anonas,
Quezon city is among famous “ukay-ukay” places. Many aspiring
vloggers have visited this mall as it has a wide range of high-quality
