3. Hello Students,
Please review this video, Positional Power vs. Personal Power,
and let's get prepared to answer some questions.
1. Answer the below questions based using Critical
Analysis. For my views on Critical Thoughts and Analysis,
please review: CTA.
2. Then respond to at least two (2) of your peer's answers by
selecting the "Reply" link. How could they have handled the
situation better? Do not simply say what you did and
recommend they do the same. Be tactful (remember, they are
your peers).
Week 1 Scenario:
You are a new supervisor (you have been there 2 months) at a
large organization that develops technology for the military.
You have previous military service experience and just finished
your Bachelor's Degree in Management from APUS.
You are doing well so far; your immediate boss is happy with
the quotas being met and can see the changes in the behavior of
some of the employees around you. However, there are three
employees who work for you that are causing some issues. You
must constantly remind them of due dates and their work is
marginal.
You decided to counsel each of them in private of course.
During the counseling sessions, you found that all three
employees say that you think you're still in the military and
expect too much too soon.
One said that you use positional power all the time, another said
that they felt you are not receptive to their ideas on how to
make the work environment more fun. The last one told you that
should have stayed in the military since you like to order
everyone around!
A. How will you handle this situation?
B. What is the difference between positional power and personal
power? (in your own words)
C. Give an example, from your personal life, of situations where
you have used (or had used on you) both positional and personal
4. power.
Future Leader Thoughts:
Chapter 1 of The Future Leader (Morgan, 2020) discusses the
leadership gap and struggles of good leaders to develop their
personnel. Please answer the following:
1. In your current position (or a previous one) do you feel your
leadership skills are being developed (or not)? What would you
like to see more (or less) of?
Submit your answer in this Discussion by selecting "Post New
Thread" above.

W2: Supervisor's Role in Goal Getting, Planning, and Achieving
Positive Results
Contains unread posts
Hello Students,
For this Discussion, you need to read Part II "Managing for
High Performance" in your textbook.
1. Use the SMART (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant
and Time-bound) traits to establish goals for one of these
subjects, youreducation, your career, or your personal
finances (please do not share your debt, balances, credit score,
etc, just what you want to accomplish).
Requirements:
a. Ensure each goal is SMART
b. 3-5 goals
c. Explanation of what you hope to achieve with each goal.
d. What difficulties you had in establishing goals.
5. For example, if you say "didn't have enough information," you
should also state what information you would have needed.
Do not use any of the goals found on page 25 of your text.
However, you may use them as a reference.
2.
Have a counseling session with a friend, co-worker, or family
member. Summarize your results in the Discussion post. How
do relationships influence our ability to effectively counsel
someone (does the relationship help, hurt?)?
3.
Explain one disciplinary technique you either have used or had
used on you. Based on the reading, was the technique proper?
Explain why or why not. Submit your answer in this Discussion
by selecting "Post New Thread" above. (Do not enter your
answer in the Assignments section of your e-classroom.)
4.
5. Then respond to at least two (2) of your peer's answers by
clicking the "Reply" link.
Were their SMART goals aligned? How could they have handled
the counseling better? Do not simply say what you did and
recommend they do the same. Be tactful (remember, they are
your peers).

W3: Communications
Contains unread posts
Hello Students,
1. For this Discussion, you need to read Part III
"Communicating with Others Proactively" in your textbook.
2. Discuss the key elements of positive and proactive
communications that are missing in the below scenario and any
other aspects of the situation you feel need to be corrected (and
6. why). Also, complete any tasks within the scenario.
3. Then respond to at least two (2) of your peer's answers by
selecting the "Reply" link. Were they effective in their approach
to each scenario?
Discussion Scenario:
(A). One-on-one supervisor with employees
Your peer (a first-line supervisor at a major retail store) is
conducting a performance evaluation of a subordinate in the
break room, where numerous other employees are eating lunch.
Your peer is raising their voice and noticeably frustrated with
the employee. The employee is attempting to defend their
position but it is obvious your peer will not let them get a word
in edge-wise. You notice numerous other employees shaking
their heads. You decide to approach your peer (also a friend)
and address what you saw. What do you say?
(B). Supervisor to a team
You are a team member on a major project for a defense
contractor. Your supervisor has just called an "urgent meeting"
to discuss the current problems with the project's progress. The
project is months behind and slightly over budget. Most people
feel it is due to the lack of resources (your project is the third
priority). The meeting is in 30 minutes and you have no
additional details as to the meeting content. Your supervisor
routinely calls meetings with little or no warning and then
expects various employees to brief their portions of the project.
When employees cannot brief their sections, the meeting is
often canceled and rescheduled for after normal working hours
to allow "time to better prepare (words of your supervisor)."
You have had enough; you decide to email your supervisor and
recommend a better way to conduct the meeting.
(C). Supervisor with a manager.
You are the manager of a department at the local shipyard. You
have 7 supervisors that work for you and run the day-to-day
operations of your six divisions. One of your supervisors
continually disrupts planning meetings to discuss personal
problems within their division. They dominate the meeting time
7. and often no one else gets to talk. You have talked to him and
counseled him several times about the proper time and place to
discuss the specific division and worker problems. Your friend
(a manager of another department) recommends that your move
the supervisor to a less challenging division or have the meeting
without him. What are you going to do? How? Why?
W4: The Future Leader
The future holds much uncertainty. In the last three weeks, we
have been reading "The Future Leader" (Morgan, 2020) and by
now you should have read chapters 1-5. Hopefully, as you have
read some of the text you have begun to formulate some ideas
and thoughts of what future leaders, managers, and employees
will be like.
Instructions: For this assignment, discuss the topics below
related to the future of leadership, the skills a manager will
need to be effective, and what employees should expect in the
future.
1. In your opinion what are some of the trends that will impact
the future of leadership?
2. What skills will the future leaders need to possess and why?
3. What will be some of the differences managers and leaders
will face 10 years from now vs. today?
4. How will employees' attitudes towards work and life change
in the next 10 years?
Please don't just give your opinion on the questions that you
pick, go and do some research and have fun exploring the topics
you chose.
W5: Supervisor Stories
For this Discussion there are three questions:
1. Discuss a positive or negative experience you have had with
a supervisor, (no real names please).
8. 2. Have you ever left a job due to a bad supervisor?
3. Knowing what you know now (after 4 weeks of our time
together), what would you have done differently as that
supervisor?
Submit your answer in this Discussion by selecting "Post New
Thread" above.
1. Then respond to at least two (2) of your peer's answers by
selecting the "Reply" link. For this week, reply to ALL peers
that reply to your initial post. Make sure your peer replies
utilize applicable course material, concepts, and terminology.
Additionally, do not forget to respond to your instructor's
questions. This is also a part of your Discussion grade
W6: Coaching
Hello Students,
For this Discussion, you need to read Part IV "Coaching for
Excellence" in your textbook.
Coaching is a vital skill for any supervisor. Answer the below
questions.
1. Explain the difference between coaching and counseling (in
your own words).
2. Select a person in your life (co-worker, friend, family
member, or someone you know well). Have a coaching session
with them and then answer the following questions:
a. Was it difficult to have a coaching session (did it turn into a
counseling session)?
b. What was the hardest part of the session?
9. c. How would you recommend conducting a coaching session
(what environment, how long, how to start, etc)?
3. Pick a TV show/movie or previous example from your own
life of a coaching session gone horribly wrong. Describe the
situation and what you would do differently (as the coach).
Respond to at least two (2) of your peer's answers by selecting
the "Reply" link.
a. Offer advice to one of your peers on their "gone wrong"
scenario on what could be done differently.
b. For your other peer reply, pick one of their items for
conducting a coaching session (2.B. above) and elaborate on
why that tip may not work.
Week 7: Leading in Change
Hello Students,
1. For this Discussion, you need to read Part V "Dealing with
Change Positively" in "Excellence in Supervision" in the
Conlow (2001) text. Also read "The Future Leader" (Morgan,
2020) Part 2, Trends and Challenges Shaping Future Leaders
pages 37-43 and Chapter 21, "The Technology Teenager" pages
241-243.
2. Week 7 focuses on Supervision during Change. Change
happens at a very rapid pace in our modern technological
society, and it can be very stressful and difficult for companies.
Your job, as a supervisor, is to help manage the change and lead
your company to a more productive era. Your initial discussion
post will be a letter or brief the employees of Green
Transportation.
3. Respond to at least two (2) of your peer's answers by
selecting the "Reply" link. Your replies should be from the
10. perspective of a disgruntled (or happy) employee who does not
think the company will keep everyone on once the plant is
automated. Point out all the concerns you would have based on
their brief (do not use any of the info from the scenario above,
assume you only know what is in their letter. You can even have
one reply to the discussion from someone who looks forward to
the change in technology and one reply from the "not so
thrilled" worker.
The Scenario – You have been chosen by your CEO to prepare a
brief or letter for your company to explain the changes that the
organization will be experiencing. The CEO chose you because
you are known to have your finger on the pulse of the workers
and embrace technology. He wants you to reassure the
workforce of the coming changes.
The CEO told you that he has heard numerous rumors of low
morale, employees looking for new jobs, possible strikes (your
workers are union) and even threatening comments. Your
company is ELO Transportation, a small local company that
takes normal gasoline engine vehicles and transforms them into
electric-powered vehicles. Your company so far has transformed
a few buses, garbage trucks, tow trucks, and numerous other
vehicles for your community (a town of 100,000 people)
however, with automation, machine learning, and AI the
company is looking to launch nationwide. This will happen in
the next two years.
A large percentage of your workforce are older workers and are
really concerned about learning new technology and losing their
job to "dumb machines"!
You can "make up" facts to help your brief, just make sure your
work is pertinent to the course material.
Post your work into the discussion board. A good guideline for
11. your brief is the "Ten Commandments for Implementing
Change," (Conlow, 2001) section of your text. Also, another
good tool to use might be the "Implications for Leaders" chart
in "The Future Leader" (Morgan, 2020) page 43.
W8: Favorite CEO, Leader Avatar and Wrap Up
Class,
I hope that you enjoyed the reading material from Jacob Morgan
on future leaders. We only briefly touched on some of the
book, however, I would encourage each of you to go further in
exploring the Four Mindsets of the Notable Nine (Explorer,
Chef, Servant, Global Citizen) and the Five Skills of the
Notable Mind (Futurist, Yoda, Translator, Coach, Technology
Teenager). Ask yourself where you are in any of these
categories as a leader, can you recognize if you have any of
these mindsets or skills?
Please answer the following questions for our last discussion.
1. Who was you favorite CEO discussed in the Morgan textbook
and why?
2. If you were building a leader avatar, what would it look like
and what would be some of the strengths and weaknesses that
you would list for yourself? Have fun with this one, if you
would like to "build" one and make a graphic and insert it for us
to view that could be quite interesting.
3. Lastly, what I would like is some student feedback. Please
pass me two items/areas that you enjoyed from this course, and
one item/area/subject that you didn't enjoy quite as much,
wanted more explanation on, or that wasn't clear. Anything that
you provide will be used to improve this course for those that
follow you.
Please remember to reply to two other students just as you have
done for the past 7 weeks.
Thank you in advance. In closing, I leave you with this:
"Success is liking yourself, liking what you do and liking how
12. you do it."
~ Maya Angelou
ASSIGNMENTS
Assignment 1: New Supervisor Power Point Project (Due Week
3)
Instructions
Topic: Teaching Effective Supervisor Skills
Instructions: This project requires you to develop a PowerPoint
slide presentation for use as a training tool with brand new
supervisors! You are in charge of presenting them with
information on how to transition from a worker to a supervisor.
There is great satisfaction in taking a brand new employee,
helping them to develop their Management, Coaching, and
Leadership skills, and then watching them excel! With this in
mind, your presentation should have a title slide, an overview,
and a body of slides for the audience. You should focus the
majority of your presentation (i.e., 8-10 slides) on what
challenges a new supervisor may face, what makes a good
supervisor (or bad one), and how to transition to becoming a
supervisor. Factors to consider in all forms of communication--
Who is your audience? What is your message? Are you trying to
persuade? Inform?
Here are some guidelines to get you started: You are the Day
Shift Supervisor and are going to brief a small group of newly-
promoted team leads with little or no past leadership
experience. They have all worked up through the ranks at the
Always Smiling Toothbrush manufacturing facility. Your
audience ages are anywhere from 25-55 years of age, with
various business backgrounds, some with military experience,
and some that have been in a little trouble before but now want
13. to move up in the company. Many of them have good friends
still in lower positions and will have a struggle adjusting. Have
fun with some of the topics and graphics of course!
Submission Instructions:IMPORTANT! Save and submit your
work as a PowerPoint Presentation with speaker notes
Link here on how to do this in PPT
The body of your presentation should include at least 8-10
presentation slides,in additionto a title slide, introduction
slide(s), and references at the end of your presentation for a
total of no more than 15 slides. PowerPoint presentations
longer than 15 slides will not be read after the 15th slide. As
such, please ensure that all assignment questions are answered
within the first 15 slides, as your grade will be based on the
first 15 slides received.
Your grade will be based on your ability to follow assignment
instructions, research conducted, the effectiveness of the
training proposed, critical thinking and analysis, and APA 7th
edition format.
Please support your ideas, arguments, and opinions with
independent research, include at least three (3) supporting
references or sources(do NOT use your textbook as one of the
three required references, or encyclopedias, Wikipedia,
unknown, undated, or anonymous sources, such as brief articles
from websites), include a reference section (i.e., 1-2 slides), and
cite all sources properly in the text of each slide, in accordance
with the 7th edition of the APA manual.
Helpful Tips
I encourage you to go online to Purdue OWL, or Excelsior
OWL, which has excellent writing labs for students. Look up
PowerPoint presentations in APA format in the search box.
These websites will have helpful tips on best practices. TED
talks are also another great source of good informa tion.

14. Assignment 2: Research Paper: Supervisory Skills (Due Week
5)
Top of Form
Instructions
Research Paper: New Supervisory Skills
Your research paper is based on the following scenario:
You have just taken over as a Shift Supervisor at Fast Fleet
Shoes Manufacturing and have a team of 30 under you. Your
educational and training level is exactly what you have today.
Your teams rotate shifts every 3 weeks and there are two shifts,
morning, 0700-3:30 PM and evening, 3PM to 11:30PM. You
have the flexibility to move people around shifts, and you stay
on the same shift, with overlap (i.e. your hours are 9-6). Two
co-leads take over when you are not there and stay on shifts
with their workers.
The previous supervisor was let go for cause, failure to meet
quotas and leadership inability. The department's morale is very
low and there is a great deal of pressure for your shift to
perform.
On top of this, there is a problem with some of your employees,
one is always late and the other calls in sick frequently (you can
decide what factors lead to their absenteeism). The previous
supervisor never did anything about this and everyone knew it
was an issue. One of your co-leads has brought it to your
attention and wants to know when you are going to fix it.
You also have an employee that has been there for 14 years and
has never been promoted to co-lead or supervisor. He came to
you and wants to know why? He is an older worker and knows
what he is doing, however, one of your co-leads told you that
some of the younger workers grumble that he is too slow and
can't learn new technology. He also stated that unless he gets
the opportunity to move up, he'll quit and make sure that
15. management knows you never gave him a chance.
Finally, there is a brand new worker, a single mother, who is
super sharp and a very hard worker. She told you on your first
day there how much she loves working at the company and
wants to progress upward. However, childcare is an issue and
sometimes she needs to leave early. Currently no one does any
work from home (your organization has not embraced it as a
culture), however, in her position (she is inventory control) she
feels she can perform this just as effectively from home several
days a week and ask you if this is possible? What is your
response?
You are to develop a solution to present to each of your co-
leads on how to start fixing some of these issues. Make the
paper informative, with some of the techniques and terms that
we have addressed thus far in the course that deal with new
supervisors. This about the terms leaders vs. managers,
counseling, feedback, types of leaders, SMART objectives,
SWOT, generational differences, Theory X and Y, MBWA, and
favoritism. These terms are not all-inclusive and you are
welcome to add others to support your solutions.
This can be a narrative paper, informative paper, a letter (albeit
a long one) or a talking paper. You can use the first person to
discuss what you think needs to be done. You can also assign
tasks or take tasks away from co-leaders.
Your supervisor, co-leads, and workers can have fictional
names, you can add in additional issues or factors and most of
all, have fun and be creative in developing this workplace. Your
co-leads can be good or bad at their job, you can decide how
little or much you want to delegate to them as well as how much
reporting back to you is needed.
Think about these challenges you will face as a new supervisor.
You may want to break this into fixing immediate problems, a
six-month goal, and one-year goal.
You should use proper APA 7th edition formatting.
You should have a title page, 3-5 pages of body content, and the
last page of references. Please make sure that your paper has
16. references even if you write it in a letter format.
Use at least 3 references for your paper. They should be articles
that support your paper or lessons we have covered. Do not use
Wikipedia!
