N
orway is a dream country for
modern architects. The over-
whelming fjord and mountain
landscapes offer the perfect setting
to create impressive constructions.
There are quite some examples, like
the Trollstigen Visitor Centre designed
by Reiulf Ramstad Architects, and the
Stegastein viewpoint, 650 meters above
the Aurlandsfjord. Another famous
Norwegian building is the Oslo Opera
from architect Tarald Lundevall.
Based on this architectural tradition,
in combination with a genuine respect
for the nature, a new passenger catama-
ran ferry --VISION OF THE FJORDS--
has been designed and built to operate
in one of Norway’s most beautiful fjords,
the Nærøyfjord.
I had the opportunity to visit the
Brøderne Aa shipyard in May, when
the ship was almost ready. It was good
to meet the designers, the builders, the
owners and the officers.
When I was in Flåm end of August
--on board cruise ship KONINGSDAM--
I took the opportunity to test-sail the
VISION OF THE FJORDS on one of her
daily return trips.
Who is the shipoWNer?
The ship is owned by The Fjords DA
(Delt Ansvar = partnership with shared
responsibility), a 50/50 joint venture set
up by Fjord1 AS, Norway’s largest ferry
operator, and Flåm AS, a leading tourist
