1. AN INTRODUCTION TO AMERICAN LEGAL ENGLISH
This is a brief course for legal professionals and translators who want to gain further insights
into the language of lawyers prevailing in the US. They will then be introduced to the
functioning of the American legal system, they will analyze actual cases and go through the
vocabulary of three important areas of American Law. It may also serve as preparatory course
for those professionals who wish to continue their studies in an American University

2. LEGAL DRAFTING – PROFESSIONAL CORRESPONDENCE, REPORTS AND CASE BRIEFS
This is a course for students in need of a language refresher and who face the challenge of writing in a legal context quite
frequently. A high intermediate/upper intermediate command of English is required.
Writing e-mails in different contexts. Differences between formal an informal register. Standardized
expressions and stylistic conventions. Writing formal and semi-formal letters.
Writing reports: developing reports in a legal context. Examples: a report about a case for delegation to a
colleague.
Writing case briefs
An overview of language and grammar tips. Common mistakes.
Re-drafting some contract clauses.
An introduction to the Plain Language Movement

This course is addressed to lawyers and legal translators who are in need of an overview of the main
types of business organizations prevailing both in the US and UK, plus other aspects concerned with the
life of a company.

Partnerships, LLPs, LLCs, etc. Leading cases.
- The Capitalization of a Company: Issuing Shares, IPOs
- An Introduction to Bankruptcy and Liquidation
- Language Exercises derived from these topics.
