2. Lviv is the largest city in western Ukraine, and the sixth-
largest in Ukraine, with a population of 717,273. It serves
as the administrative centre of Lviv Oblast and Lviv Raion,

named in honour of Leo, the eldest son of Daniel, King of
Ruthenia.

4. GEOGRAPHY
Lviv is on the edge of the Roztochia Upland, about 70
kilometres (43 miles) east of Polish border and 160 km (99
mi) north of the eastern Carpathian Mountains. The average
altitude of Lviv is 296 metres (971 feet) above sea level. Its
highest point is the Vysokyi Zamok (High Castle), 409 meters
(1342 feet) above sea level. This castle has a commanding
view of the historic city centre with its distinctive green-
domed churches and intricate architecture.

The old walled city was at the foothills of the High Castle on
the banks of the Poltva River. In the 13th century, the river
was used to transport goods. In the early 20th century, the
Poltva was covered over in areas where it flows through the
city; the river flows directly beneath Lviv's central street,
Freedom Avenue (Prospect Svobody), and the Lviv Theatre of
Opera and Ballet.

Archaeologists have demonstrated that the Lviv area was settled by the
fifth century,with the gord at Chernecha Hora-Voznesensk Street in
Lychakivskyi District attributed to White Croats The city of Lviv was
founded in 1250 by King Daniel of Galicia (1200–1264) in the Principality
of Halych of Kingdom of Ruthenia and named in honour of his son Lev as
Lvihorod which is consistent with names of other Ukrainian cities, such as
Myrhorod, Sharhorod, Novhorod, Bilhorod, Horodyshche, and Horodok.
In the 13th and early 14th centuries, Lviv was largely a wooden city, except for its
several stone churches. Some of them, like the Church of Saint Nicholas, have
survived, although in a thoroughly rebuilt form.The town was inherited by the Grand
Duchy of Lithuania in 1340 and ruled by voivode Dmytro Dedko, the favourite of the
Lithuanian prince Liubartas, until 1349.

14. THE LVIV THEATRE OF
OPERA AND BALLET.

The Lviv Theatre of Opera and Ballet is a bright example of the
Neo-Renaissance style in architecture. It is often compared
with the Vienna State Opera for its grand façade and décor.
Being built in 1900 as the project of Polish architect Zygmunt
Gorgolewski, the building holds a lot of secrets inside. One of
the legends says that the architect attempted suicide the
following year, because he had realized that the underground
waters of the river Plotva were washing away the foundation of
the theatre. Despite that, the Lviv Theatre of Opera and Ballet
is still functioning and holds new performances every season.
15. TOWN HALL

The Market Square is part of the historic center of Lviv, which is
included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. The main attraction of
the square is Town Hall, constructed in the 14th century. Its height
is 65 meters (213 feet), and it is considered to be the highest town

amazing viewpoint with an incredible panorama over the city.
16. POTOCKI PALACE
A 19th-century architectural monument has been built in the style of French Classicism for the influential family
of Polish tycoons – the Potocki. The massive gates and moulded balconies emphasize the majesty of the palace.
The exterior and interior décor was provided to arrange chamber concerts and to organize important political
meetings. In Soviet times, the building served as a Registry Office, and in the beginning of the 21st century, the
Potocki Palace was transferred to the Lviv Art Gallery.

Lychakiv Cemetery is an integral part of the city’s architecture and
one of the most magnificent necropolises in Europe, dating from
the 18th century. The place is known not only for its beautiful
crypts and gravestone monuments, but also for the many hidden

about 500 sculptures of completely different architectural styles
and over 2,000 crypts. The inscriptions on tombstones are written

SCIENTISTS
House of scientists in Lviv — a former aristocratic casino, noble
casino, popular casino, Gerhard casino — is architectural
monument, located in the central part of the city. The authors of
the project were known Viennese architects H.Helmer and F.Felner
(authors of the Odessa Opera House). The architects were inspired
by examples of palace architecture of Central European Baroque.
Imposing decoration of facades of the building is combined with
exquisite elegance in construction of stairway gallery of lobby. The
interiors of the building are often used for filming, including the
film "D'Artagnan and Three Musketeers.".
19. ITALIAN
COURTYARD.
The Italian courtyard reflects the architectural
monuments of the Renaissance. The most
romantic and cosy corner in nearby Market
Square, since the noise from the city center does
not get there. It should be noted that according to
the laws of that time, all the stone houses of the
Square could have no more than three windows on
the façade. It was a rule of equal opportunities
and even the richest citizen of Lviv, the wine
merchant Konstantin Kornyakt, had to follow it.
But 100 years ago, the city authorities bought the
building and placed a museum named after King
Jana III there. Now in the Italian courtyard, jazz
and classical concerts are often held, during
which you can drink a cup of refined Lviv coffee.

UNIVERSITY.
Lviv National Ivan Franko University is one of the oldest in the
whole of Eastern Europe. It exists since 1608. Up to 1773, the main
disciplines of the university were philosophy, Latin and theology.
But as soon as the Kingdom of Galicia entered the Habsburg
Empire, the education became more secular, and teaching began
in the Ukrainian language. All the professors were supposed to
have the title of Doctor of Sciences, and each candidate was
personally approved by the commission of the Ministry of

1872 - 1952) - was one of the great dramatic sopranos of her
time. Her fame spread from Russia to Italy. She was granddaughter
of a Ukrainian writer - Hryhoriy Savchynskyi. She made her debut at
Lemberg in 1892, soon afterwards appearing in Odessa and
Cracow. In 1896 she sang in Italy for the first time. Her very last
opera appearances were in Naples in 1920 ( "Lohengrin" and
"Lorelea"). By that time she had over fifty operas in her repertoire.
The musical circles in Europe and Americas recognized Salomea
Krushelnytska as one of the greatest opera singers of first quarter
twentieth century. In 1939 she came back to Lviv and from 1946
she taught at the Lysenko Conservatory there
