This is the required course for all non-teachers who support physical education in primary schools. It is
specifically designed to meet the needs of coaches, learning assistants and graduate assistants.
The qualification is perfect if you already work, or aspire to work, in a physical education and school sport setting
as it is specifically designed to provide you with a greater understanding of programmes of study for physical
education, the national curriculum and the environment in which you will be operating.

aims to upskill primary school teachers and higher level teaching assistants to improve the overall delivery of the
physical education curriculum within primary schools.

understanding to be able to improve standards of physical education in your school.

Assessing Science in the Early Years
Start date: 22 February 2017; 1 March 2017 and 15 March 2017
Duration: 6 hours over 3 Wednesdays

This course is aimed at science teachers currently working in the early years.
It is ideal if you are looking for a theoretical underpinning of science teaching
and assessment. In a workshop environment, you will also be introduced to a tool that can be used to observe
and assess science in the early years and have the opportunity to trial the tool in the setting and gain valuable
peer feedback.
This course is scheduled over a four week period. Between sessions two and three, a two week break is planned
to ensure students have sufficient time to trial and evaluate the assessment tool.

Beach School Taster Day

Beach School has been developed with the same ethos as Forest School, where children are encouraged to
relate to the natural environment in a variety of ways. Beach School is a cross curricular course, taking in art,
science, maths, history, and literacy, and encourages children to consider and
manage risk and to develop their resilience and immerse themselves in the
natural world.

Developing an Autism-Friendly Learning
Environment
Start date: 3 March 2017; 25 May 2017; 30 August 2017

Sixty per cent of teachers believe that they lack the training they need to teach pupils on the autism spectrum
(NASUWT Support for Children and Young People with Special Educational Needs, June 2013).
In the context of this training, participants will learn about:
• a range of pedagogic approaches for creating an autism-friendly environment
• reasonable adjustments for children in the autism spectrum condition and the legal aspects of provision
• working inter-professionally with relevant services in the context of the local offer

Developing Effective Online Learning

Developing Learning for Behaviour Management
Start date: 14 November 2016 and follow-up half-day 20 February 2017

This course is ideal for anyone who is new to a key stage in early years or primary schools, including NQTs and
early career teachers.
You will have an opportunity to return to key principles of behaviour management and to discuss management
concerns outside of the classroom environment with experienced practitioners and teachers.
E-safety for Practicing Teachers
This is a bespoke course only which can run at your setting for five or more delegates – please contact
us to discuss.
Through this course, you will be introduced to the most updated e-safety guidance, information and resources
for use with primary/secondary pupils and their parents.
The course covers a wide range of issues to do with e-safety in schools including safeguarding responsibilities,
practical suggestions for activities for use with children, and case studies for consideration.
Best practice for introducing children and parents to key e-safety principles will be included and a comprehensive
repository of resources will be provided to each participant for future use.
Forest School Taster Session
Start date: 10 June 2017
Duration: Half-day, either morning or afternoon session

Location: Kingston Hill campus outdoor woodland areas
This workshop is an introduction to the Forest School ethos with discussion about some of the underpinning
theories included. You will have the opportunity to take part in some practical Forest School experiences and
to look at some of the risks and benefits associated with outdoor learning.
The outdoor sessions will be hands-on and practical. You will be placed into small groups or you can work
individually. You will take home handouts and some examples of risk versus benefits assessments.
Learning to Teach for Further and Higher Education
Start date: 1 February 2017
Duration: 12 hours per week x 7 weeks
This online course will provide you with a taster for teaching and is designed to give you the confidence to
undertake teaching and lecturing assignments by introducing you to the fundamentals of teaching adults in
higher and further education.

Learning to Think Critically
Start date: 24 April 2017; 4 September 2017
Duration: 6 weeks distance learning
Critical thinking is a core life skill and the primary purpose of higher education. This course provides teachers and
educators at any level a great opportunity to challenge your ideas about:
• what constitutes knowledge
• how to identify and evaluate information, and
• using that information to present and critique a position or argument.
The course is timely because people are being continuously bombarded
with ever increasing amounts of information through the media, online
and advertising. This course will develop participants’ abilities to
critically evaluate information to make informed decisions for the family
and employer.
Literacy Professional Skills Test – Support Workshop
Start date: 25 February 2017; 25 March 2017; 27 May 2017; 7 June 2017; 28 June 2017
Duration: Half-day
Time: 10.00–13.00 (February, March, May dates) and 17.00–20.00 (June dates)

This course is ideal for those who wish to gain the knowledge and understanding required to pass the QTS
Literacy Professional Skills Test.
Sessions will also enable you to be able to ask questions about the test structure and content. Time is built into
the sessions in order to consider issues personal to the individual attendees.

Making Art and Craft with your Children
Start date: 10 November; 17 November; 24 November 2017
Duration: 2 hours
Time: 19.00–21.00

This course is also available as a package which schools can buy in to take place on school premises.
This is a course for teachers or parents who would like to ‘do art’, or make things with their children, but feel
unconfident and do not know where to start. This course will offer you the opportunity to try out simple activities
which you can do with your children, using free or cheap everyday materials. We will also consider why it is
important to encourage children to make, and look after their own ‘tool box’ where they can keep and organise
their art and craft materials.

Mathematics and Art in the Primary School

This course will give you the opportunity to explore the strong links between maths and visual art and address
ways in which you can embed these in your primary curriculum. We will look at paintings and sculptures by
artists whose work relates to maths, and in the practical activities, we will use a range of media in 2D and 3D.

Mathematics Coordinator Workshop

We will be looking at your yearly activity, reviewing efficient ways
of working with the greatest impact, engaging in activities to support
your action plan and policies, and updating your current knowledge
with all things new in the world of mathematics. It’s also an excellent
opportunity to network with other coordinators/SL in your area.
The role of Mathematics Subject Leadership is crucial to the
successful management and progress within your school.
This course aims to provide a starting point for the year ahead
whether you have been in the role for a few years or embarking
on the role for the first time.
Numeracy Professional Skills Test Support Workshop

The aim of this course is to support candidates who are preparing to take the QTS Professional Numeracy
Skills Test. There will be time for questions and answers, and an opportunity to review areas of mathematics.
We advise that candidates read the information on the DfE website before attending.
In 2015–16, 100% of attendees on the Numeracy Professional
Skills Test Support Workshop felt that the teaching staff were

Paws b – Bringing Mindfulness to your School (7–11 year olds)
us to discuss.
Paws b is a national course created by the Mindfulness in Schools Project. This course supports the wellbeing
and resilience for children within early years and school settings. It will provide practitioners and teachers with
a range of tools to use with children, including yoga and mindfulness practices – looking at bringing a mindful
approach to their care and teaching.

Planning in the Early Years

This course is designed for anyone new to teaching in the early years who wishes to explore ideas and
opportunities to engage children across the areas and aspects of learning.
You will gain an understanding of different ways to approach planning, how to engage children with the planning

Researching Educational Practice (for Non-Specialist Researchers)
Duration: 1 day or 2 hours x 3 weeks (please check website for confirmed dates)

Teachers are researchers of everyday practice, either through collecting data from their pupils or by reflecting on
their own practice with a view to improving it. Despite this, they are often reluctant to see research as an element
of their profession that will help them develop their practice and professional profile, and become leaders of
change. This course will make you aware of your ability as a practitioner researcher and prepare you to actualise
this ability in a simple and practical way.
The Rights of the Child
Start date: 23 November 2016; 26 April 2017
Duration: 3 hours (plus 30 minutes break)

This workshop will help you to understand the principles of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the
Child (UNCRC). It provides an understanding of the ethos of the UNCRC which informs legislation and policies
surrounding children and young people. It also provides a basic platform to formulate policies and procedures
that champion the best interests of children.

Through this very interactive course, you will explore challenging issues in safeguarding practice in
educational settings. You will also gain in-depth understanding of the range of factors affecting how teachers
and educational practitioners engage, behave, lead and manage in pressured and emotive situations.
You will be able to use your new knowledge to implement strategies in your own schools and settings
to safeguard children, staff and other stakeholders. You will benefit from an opportunity to engage in

SENCO: Finding Your Way Through the Role
Start date: 2 March 2017; 1 September 2017

If you are considering becoming a SENCO or you are a SENCO new to the role, this is a great fast track
training opportunity to get an understanding of the multiple requirements of the role. This course will give you
the opportunity to network with other SENCOs in early years, primary, secondary or further education. It can
also be attended by more experienced SENCOs who wish to brush up or consolidate their existing knowledge
and expertise.
Subject Knowledge Enhancement (SKE) Courses
SKE courses are aimed at anyone applying to train as a secondary school teacher who does not have a
degree in their chosen subject area, or who feels that they lack subject knowledge and would benefit from
a refresher course.
Kingston University School of Education staff will be running SKE courses
in maths, physics, biology and modern foreign languages (MFL).

Supporting EAL Learners in the Early Years

The target audience for this workshop is teachers and practitioners working in early years settings who would
like to refresh their knowledge, ask questions and network around this area of classroom management.
During the session, delegates will be able to gain knowledge about key theories and best practice with
regards to supporting learners who have English as an additional language.

Supporting Wellbeing for FEET Funded Toddlers
Duration: 1 day

Many PVI and maintained settings have provision for free childcare for two-year-olds (FEET) funded toddlers.
Supporting these toddlers’ wellbeing is vital if they are going to develop and learn successfully. This course looks
at what wellbeing is and reflects on practitioners practice and provision to support the development of wellbeing
within the early years setting.

If you are an international teacher of English and you would like to develop your proficiency as an English
language teacher, this intensive course is for you.
This course is designed to facilitate your professional development by improving your English communication
skills and developing your awareness of effective teaching methods.
Language workshops will provide direct experience of a range of methods with a focus on communicative
language teaching. Lectures and presentations will provide additional pedagogical input.
In addition to this learning you will visit English primary and secondary schools to learn how the school is
organised and how lessons are taught and visit some of the wonderful sights of London, to explore historic
and contemporary British culture and collect authentic materials and experiences to enrich your classes.
Teaching Primary Languages
This is a bespoke course only for five or more delegates –

This course is for primary school teachers, including NQTs, or
education staff teaching a modern foreign language in a primary
school. There is no pre-requisite with regard to language proficiency
as the emphasis will be on pedagogy.

Understanding Islam Basics

Understanding and Supporting Emotional Development in
Young Children

This course is designed for anyone working with young children from birth to seven years of age who wishes to
understand how young children develop emotionally, and how adults can support them.
You will gain an understanding of different types of emotions and how they may differ according to cultural or
parental expectations, along with ‘ages and stages’ of development.
You will also explore ways in which you can support young children to understand their feelings, and manage
their responses.

Using Subject Knowledge in Teaching History

On this course you will gain knowledge and understanding of approaches of how to incorporate substantive
knowledge of a history topic into a history lesson. We will explore:
• Review of resources which support teachers to develop subject knowledge of a history unit
• Using castles as an example of a history topic, consider advantages and disadvantages of teaching a history
topic through a theme and explore opportunities to teach children historical vocabulary
• Explore how primary/secondary sources facilitate the teaching and learning of historical vocabulary.
Wellbeing for Children Through Art
Duration: Half-day
Time: 09.00–12.00

This course is for primary teachers and will explore the therapeutic value of art, and offer media, techniques and
ideas which encourage wellbeing and self-affirmation through making.
Ways of making art which are fulfilling and calming will be considered, as well as the importance of a broad and
balanced art curriculum which provides a range of ways of working in different media. The social and artistic
benefits of collaboration will be emphasised, and we will look at the work of artists for whom artmaking is an
explicitly therapeutic activity.
Yoga and Mindfulness for Children Aged 2–7 Years
Start date: 13 October and 27 October 2016; 1 February and 15 February 2017
Duration: 2 days
Time: 10.00–15.00

This course will help you to support the wellbeing and resilience for children within early years and primary
settings. You will understand the safety and practicalities of yoga and mindfulness, and how to integrate them
into the appropriate curriculum.
This can also be run as a bespoke three hour course at your setting with a focus on a particular year group, or

The School of Education works in partnership with other departments and teams across Kingston
University.
The Centre of Higher Education Research (CHERP)
CHERP was created to advance pedagogy, professional practice and scholarship in, and research
into, higher education. Apart from short courses we offer a range of validated programmes including:
a PGCert Learning and Teaching in Higher Education, an MA Research and Practice in Higher
Education, and a Professional Doctorate in Higher Education (forthcoming in 2017).
Child Development and Learning Difficulties Unit
Our work focuses on cognitive, behavioural, and emotional development in both typical and atypical
populations across a wide age range, including infants, children and adolescents.
Areas of expertise include infant cognition and premature infants, developmental disorders including
Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD), Williams syndrome, Dyslexia and Specific Language Impairment,
ADHD, visual differences, anxiety, bullying, and education.
In addition to carrying out internationally excellent research, the unit also translates the latest findings
into effective and practical assessments and interventions, and runs workshops for professionals,
parents, carers and academics.
English for Academic and Professional Development Team
We have run successful bespoke programmes for English Language Teachers for a number of years.
We also offer a range of intensive English language courses that can be tailored to your specific
requirements, over periods of one to four weeks in a residential setting.
Widening Participation Network
The Education Liaison team at Kingston University:
• co-ordinates Kingston University’s contact with schools and colleges; and
• promotes awareness and helps to raise aspirations for students aged 10–18, via outreach work.
All of our activities have a widening participation focus. We aim to increase the participation rate of
those students that have been traditionally unrepresented in higher education.
