So let me address this right off.
How much effort is needed?
If the desire you have for the job you are after is low and the competition for the job is low – the effort you need to put in is low
Why would you put in any more effort? With a low desire, it’s not going to devastate you if you don’t get the job.
If however you re going after your dream job and the competition for that job is very high, then you are going to need to put in maximum effort.
People ask me if I can guarantee them a job. My answer is always NO. The reason for that is that I can control how much time and effort you put in.
Let me explain why I’m doing this presentation today.
When I started providing employment support services, I was helping a range of people, from a stay-at-home mom wanting to get back into the workforce, to a lawyer who wanted to change firms
I joined the Professional Association of Resume Writiers to learn how to write the perfect resume so that I would be able to help all my clients who came from all different industries:
retail, manufacturing, IT, finance, entry level, mid management, senior management and even executive level clients.
At one point, I partnered with a local TV station and co-produced a weekly show called Invest In Your Future. A TV series dedicated to revealing the secrets to getting a job, keeping a job and excelling in a job.
We had a bust-better-best series where we filmed interviews and I would analyzed them live to show what the candidates did very well and what they didn’t. Everyone could easily tell if an interview was a bust and they could easily tell when it was the best. Where people struggled was in the better category. It wasn’t as obvious until someone pointed it out what could have been better.
I also had an ”Ask Cat” segment where I would take live career related questions on air.
I was got hired to support the challenging career needs of military families. They often struggle to do having to relocated every few years. I supported both the spouses and partners of mitliary member, but also military members themselves when they were considering a transition from their military career to a civilian career. I even spoke at military Second Career Network Conferences.
When I left my job, I did so to dedicate myself to advancing leaders.
I now have a team of experts in their fields that help me do that.
But I think the most important qualification I have that makes me an expert
My personal success in landing my dream job.
Let me paint you a picture.
I was working as career coach in a small, remote community in northern Alberta, in Canada.
I supervised one employee, in the office down the hall.
I was not responsible for any budget.
I had never lead a team or even been a manager.
My dream job involved leading and managing a team of over 30 employees who were geographically disbursed across several countries in Europe. The position involved managing a budget of almost $2,000,000.
Even though there were several highly qualified internal candidates, they advertised the position across Canada.
And because the organization was going to pay for all moving expenses (for the relocation to Europe), the competition for the position was extremely high.
They narrowed down the applicants to 3 or 4. Even though I was an unknown, external candidare. the resume I wrote screened through so I was one of the candidates that would be interviewed.
It shouldn’t surprise you that the all the other candidates had substantially more experience and qualifications than I did. In fact, what should surprise you is how did I get screened through.
Don’t worry, I’m going to share my process with you in a bit.
I later found out that one of the candidates I was competing against was not only an internal candidate, but also the individual who created the job. They created and designed the job for themselves. Another candidate, also an internal candiate worked for and reported to the individual who created the job description.
Many people within the organization still wonder today how I beat these candidates which for all intensive purposes should have been able to blow my candidacy out of the water.
This is probably is the strongest point of what makes me an expert. I’m not just talking the talk. I’m walking the walk.
Here’s a little bit about me personally,
That was also probably the moment when I started writing my book, “Now That the Candy’s Gone: Mastering the Art of Self Confidence.
It’s all fine and well that today I have the confidence, but it took a long time for me to overcome the repeated messages of “nice kid, isn’t going to amount to much” in my head,
it’s no wonder why I failed college.
Remember how I landed my dream job? Well, I did that without a college diploma or degree.
Ready to get into my 10 Step Success Strategy
Give me a ”ready” in the chat
Step 1 is Adopting the Right Mindset
I had over overcome the limiting beliefs I had about myself and what I was capable of
If I didn’t believe that I could do that job in Europe, I never would have been able to convince someone else
One of the things I did to overcome my limiting beliefs was visualize myself in the job, so vividly that I could smell the capacinno I was sipping at an outdoor café during my break
It’s critical to address these before you get started
Doing so, helps you:
Increase your confidence, which if you are not exhibiting high degrees of confidence, how do you expect the employer to have confidence in you
It helps to take risks. Going for your dream job is going to push you outside your comfort zone. It took some personal courage to apply for that job.
It can help you stay motivated. I had setbacks along the way. Set backs which by the way felt devasting, but had I not had them, I never would have continued to land my dream job.
Employeer to Employer
When you get into the head of the employer and understand their needs, you can highlight your relevant skills and experience that directly align with the job requirements. You can tailor your entire approach to align with what they are looking for and therefore increase your chances of resonating with them.
Applicant to Marketer
When you switch from applicant to marketer, you can leverage proven marketing and sales tactics during your search process. Again, increasing the probably of success.
Looking for what’s there versus looking for your dream job
When you switch from seeing what's advertised to looking specifically for your dream job, you may actually find it. Otherwise, it may remain hidden and only those who look for it are going to find it.
Step 2 Take Personal Inventory
Create a Master Career Portfolio
Why this is a critical step:
Process reminds you of what you have accomplished
Need all the info in one place to write the perfect resume
Helps prepare you for your interview
Used to create a showcase which I’ll address in step 6
Step 2 Personal Inventory – what you can include
Step 3 Find Your Dream Job
Set a clear intention of what you want in a job
This is the step where you decide what you want, and as importantly, what you don’t want.
It’s pretty hard to find your dream job if you are unsure of what you are looking for
It helps you focus
Guides your decision making
Increases your chances of success
Helps you communicate effectively
Enhances your sense of fulfillment
Online job search websitesWebsites like Indeed, LinkedIn, Glassdoor, and Monster are popular online job search platforms where you can find a wide range of job postings.
Company and organization websites
This is a great place to look as you will not only have access to any potential openings, but you can learn important details about the company or organization.
networking
Networking is an effective way to learn about job opportunities that may not be advertised. Attend industry events, connect with professionals on LinkedIn, and ask for referrals from friends and family. (My dream job was actually recommended to me by my employer at the time - my boss knew I was looking.)
Professional Associations
Joining a professional association in your field can provide access to job listings, networking events, and industry news.
Recruiting Agencies and Search Firms
Recruiting agencies can help match you with job opportunities that fit your skills and experience. They are often privy to jobs that are not advertised.
NOTE: I'm a big believer that you should shoot for the moon when going after your dream job. I also believe however that it's important to manage expectations. Some jobs have very specific requirements that are non-negotiable.
Step 4 Gather Intelligence
Knowledge is power – do your research
Step 4 Gather Intelligence
Knowledge is power – do your research
About the job
Just because a job title is the same, it doesn't mean that the requirements for the job will be. Also, if you are striving for a position that you have not held before, you may want to make sure you know what's involved.
About the organization
What's the company culture? How do current employees feel about working there. What benefits and perks can you expect? What's their reputation?
About the industry
You want to know what's happening in the industry. What are the growth prospects? Information about the industry can also expose work culture and environment which can help you determine if the job is a good fit for you.
About the job market
Knowing how competitive the market is for the job you are going after is going to determine how much time and effort you should put into the process.
About the salary
The more you know about the salary range for the job you are going for will help you when it comes to negotiating your offer. It can also help you decide if the job meets your financial expectations.
Step 5 Write the Perfect Resume
Customize Your Resume
The purpose of your resume is singular, to LAND YOU AN INTERVIEW.
I do not believe in a one size fits all. As a professional resume writer, I have always strived to write the "Perfect Resume"
A perfect resume is one that showcases your skills, aptitudes, qualifications, experience and credentials in relation to a specific job opportunity.
Step 5 Write the Perfect Resume
Customize Your Resume
Step 6 Present Your Best Self
Harness the Power of a Showcase Portfolio
You can present your best self without sounding arrogant.
Ensure consistent personal branding
Follow expected industry protocols
Express your unique selling proposition
Put it altogether into a showcase portfolio
It’s an extension of your resume but can include more details about the accomplishments you have achieved throughout your career
For instance:
If the position requires your ability to handle an interpersonal conflict you can have a page dedicated to how skilled you are in this area:
You can include examples of times when you were successful in resolving a conflict
You can write out your examples in a way that best presents the situation and your skills in this regard
Which means that you have many examples if asked the question, “can you tell us about a time when you resolved an interpersonal conflict”
That makes you less nervous about not having good examples to draw upon because you took the time ahead of the interview to lay all this out
You can provide a copy of this portfolio to all the members of the interview panel
This is a must have in an interview if you get nervous and draw a blank
You can say something like, if you flip to page 4 in my portfolio, I’ve provided many examples of when I resolved interpersonal conflicts
While you have the portfolio open to that page, you can merely read your pre-prepared response
Step 7 Ace Your Interview
Go into your interview well prepared
Be so prepared that you feel confident answering any question they throw at you.
Demonstrate your confidence by interviewing them back, and reference some of the intelligence you collected along the way.
Step 8 Negotiate the Best Offer
Leverage Negotiation Gambits to get the best offer
Contract negotiations begin the minute you make contact, everything you say and do after that point affects negotiations. Make every moment count.
There is always room to negotiate.
Step 9 Success in Your New Role
Start off on the right foot – the process is not over
The process doesn't end when you accept the offer. Your performance in the first few months sets the tone for your evaluation or assessment period.
Don't kid yourself, every job has an evaluation period.
Step 10 Stay Ready
You never know when your next dream job will come along
As you get more experience and grow professionally, you will inevitably come across a new dream job that aligns with the expertise and skills you have accumulated.
Collect all your career related documents and begin organizing them into order
Then follow the steps
