OVERCOMING ADVERSE CHILDHOOD EXPERIENCES (ACES)
According to the Tamarack Institute, there are “two things that make community
engagement authentic: education and empowerment.”
Across the globe, we talk, have speaker bureaus, focus groups and strategic planning
sessions that involve community groups, grassroot organizations and neighborhood
councils for a short duration of time only to develop nice colorful three year strategic
plans that then sit on shelves and/or are partially operationalized in one year
increments.
As public policymakers, if we really want to see meaningful community engagement
and social impact then we must utilize “Context Experts” as defined by the
Tamarack Institute are “people with lived experience of the situation, including
children & youth. They are the people who experientially know about the issue”.
